EU presses China on rare earths and Ukraine war
The statement from the EU's diplomatic service came after Kaja Kallas, the bloc's high representative for foreign policy, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Brussels.
Kallas "called on China to put an end to its distortive practices, including its restrictions on rare earths exports, which pose significant risks to European companies and endanger the reliability of global supply chains," the EU said.
On trade, Kallas urged "concrete solutions to rebalance the economic relationship, level the playing field and improve reciprocity in market access".
She also "highlighted the serious threat Chinese companies' support for Russia's illegal war poses to European security".
China says it does not provide military support to Russia for the war in Ukraine. But European officials say Chinese companies provide many of the vital components for Russian drones and other weapons used in Ukraine.
Kallas called on China "to immediately cease all material support that sustains Russia's military industrial complex" and support "a full and unconditional ceasefire" and a "just and lasting peace in Ukraine".
Wednesday's discussions were to lay the groundwork for a summit between EU and Chinese leaders later this month.
Wang also met earlier in the day with European Council President Antonio Costa as part of those preparations.
In that meeting, Wang called on both sides to respect each other's core interests and increase mutual understanding, adding that "unilateralism and acts of bullying have seriously undermined the international order and rules," according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.
EU officials had said they would use the meeting between Kallas and Wang to urge China to use its influence as Iran's main oil buyer to press Tehran to make a deal over its nuclear programme and de-escalate conflict in the Middle East.
The EU statement did not say whether those efforts had borne any fruit.
But it said Kallas and Wang "agreed on the importance of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime".
The EU and Britain, France and Germany are parties to a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran that Washington abandoned in 2018, which they hope to revive. Iran has always said its nuclear programme is peaceful and denies seeking a weapon.
Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to China for the summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang on July 24-25.

Iconic car brand to ‘cut 400 jobs' despite saying it has ‘no plans' to end production in UK
AN iconic sports car manufacturer is reportedly considering axing 400 jobs after saying it had no plans to end production in the UK. The factory set to lose 30 per cent of its work force in Norfolk has been open since the 1960s. 4 4 Lotus has reportedly become the latest car manufacturer to look at slashing its UK workforce. The move comes after the brand held emergency talks and fellow motor manufacturer Nissan said it would be slashing 250 jobs from one of its UK sites. A report in the Daily Mail claims that the sports car specialist is considering cutting 30 per cent of jobs at its plant in Hethel, Norfolk. Of the 1,300 staff at the site up to 390 could now be facing down the prospect of losing their job. A decision on the job losses is expected from the brand in the next few months. Recent reports that the brand was considering closing its factory in Hethel and moving production to the US were denied by the firm. Majority owned by Chinese carmaker Geely, Lotus adamantly rejected the claims, saying in a statement: "The UK is the heart of the Lotus brand—home to our sports car manufacturing, global design centre, motorsport operations, and Lotus Engineering. "It is also our largest commercial market in Europe. "Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory. "We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market. The modern classic Lotus Elise "We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK, over the past six years. " Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage." The reports of imminent closure however sparked intervention by the government with company executives meeting business secretary Jonathan Reynolds. The meeting on Sunday, June29, reportedly saw the group discuss possible support measures. 4 4 Fears were raised that the brand would fall victim to Donald Trump's import tariffs. These were reportedly not addressed by the news that the tariffs would be reduced from 27.5 per cent to 10 per cent. Despite the emergency meeting, the offer of government support and the reduction in tariffs, the brand is still said to be set to cut a huge number of jobs. The Sun has approached Lotus for comment.

Ukraine's president arrives in Denmark for talks with key European backers
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Denmark on Thursday as the Nordic country launched its European Union presidency, the Danish prime minister's office said. Zelenskyy flew into the western city of Aarhus. A Ukrainian flag flew from the aircraft cockpit as it parked. He was due to hold talks with Prime Minister Mette Fredericksen and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, both staunch backers of Ukraine. His trip comes after the Trump administration decided to halt some arms shipments promised to help Kyiv fight off Russia's invasion. 'Ukraine belongs in the EU. It is in the interest of both Denmark and Europe. Therefore, the Danish Presidency will do everything we can to help Ukraine on its path towards EU membership,' Frederiksen said in a statement. Her government has invested in Ukraine's defense industry — which can produce arms and ammunition more quickly and cheaply than elsewhere in Europe — and has invited Ukrainian companies to set up shop on safer ground in Denmark. Ukraine's EU membership path is being blocked by Hungary. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán insists that Ukraine should remain a buffer zone between Russia and NATO countries. During his visit to Denmark, Zelenskyy is also expected to discuss cooperation in the defense industry and new sanctions against Russia. He is also likely to have an audience with King Frederik X of Denmark.
