Fans finally learn meaning behind SZA's name after an entire decade

Daily Mirror2 days ago
SZA, whose real name is Solana Imani Rowe, has been in the music game for years, but fans have only just learned the true meaning of her name, as well as the way it's pronounced
SZA is one of the most talked-about artists in the music industry at the moment. As well as playing at Glastonbury in 2024, she sent fans wild with an incredible performance at the Super Bowl half time show with Kendrick Lamar.

The much anticipated performance was watched by millions of music and sport fans at home, while a number of celebrities had headed to the stadium in New Orleans. Jay Z, Taylor Swift and Ice Spice were all in attendance to see the pair pull off a spectacular show.

And now, the British public can get in on the action. Kendrick and SZA are currently on a UK tour, which is about to come to both Cardiff and London. People have been so excited for the shows they've been brushing up on their music trivia.

And one piece of knowledge that people are only just learning about is the origins of SZA's name – how to pronounce it and what the acronym actually stands for.
The artist, whose real name is Solana Imani Rowe, launched her career in 2011, but it wasn't until the release of her Ctrl album in 2017 that she truly broke through.

Many fans were oblivious to the correct pronunciation of her name, leading some to turn to Reddit to question if they were alone in their confusion.
One asked: "Did anyone else initially assume that SZA's stage name was pronounced 'zah'?"
Others also confessed they'd been left baffled by the stage name, as one responder wrote: "Yes haha I also thought it was Zah, my second guess was S-Z-A. Didn't realise until I was told that it was Sizzah. Not very intuitive, at least not to me."

A second remarked: "I thought it was pronounced Ess Zee Ay, or Ess Zed Ay in Canada." And a third asked: "Doesn't S-followed by-Z make a 'sh' sound usually?"
If you are struggling, it's pronounced scissor! And now you've got that pronunciation down, it's time to think about the meaning behind the acronym.
SZA shared the significance of her moniker in previous interviews, revealing that each letter represents a unique concept from the Supreme Alphabet.

She said: "Each letter stands for a different ideology. So, S, stands for self-sovereignty, like saviour of one's self.
"Z stands for zig-zag, which is enlightenment of one's self, and then A stands for Allah, or a God, or whatever you consider the most high."

Coldplay kiss-cam scandal: Lawyers weigh in to devCan Andy Byron sue band?

Andy Byron, the former CEO of Astronomer, was caught on the kiss-cam at a Coldplay concert last week, leading to his resignation - but could he sue the band for the embarrassing moment? This week has undoubtedly been chaotic for former Astronomer chief executive Andy Byron. ‌ The married technology boss landed himself in hot water when he was caught on the kiss-cam at a Coldplay gig at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, getting cosy with Kristin Cabot, Astronomer's head of HR - and crucially, not his wife. ‌ After the footage went viral, Astronomer released a statement and Byron stepped down from his role, shortly before Martin made a statement warning fans what to expect at his next concerts. ‌ Amid the resulting furore, rumours emerged that Byron might pursue legal action, despite Martin cautioning supporters what they could expect at his upcoming show. The Mirror US consulted two barristers about Byron's possible legal position against the British rock band. "Any legal claims from Byron would be dead on arrival," stated Ron Zambrano of West Coast Employment Lawyers in Los Angeles. "He has no grounds to sue.", reports the Mirror US, reports the Express. ‌ Zambrano explained further: "First, it would immediately be struck down as a restriction on creative speech and Coldplay's ability to be artistic during their performances. Second, Byron and Cabot waived their right to privacy when they decided to attend a public event, so their public display of affection is on them, not on Coldplay. They just got caught." Supporting Zambrano's view, Tre Lovell of the Lovell Firm, who specialises in civil and entertainment law, agreed: "CEO Andy Bryon has no legal recourse against Coldplay for putting him on the big screen." ‌ Lovell remarked, "When you are out in public, you have no right to privacy for your actions. People are free to photograph you and video you." He clarified, "What people cannot do is use the video or photographs to violate your right to publicity in terms of using your image for commercial purposes or defame you and depict you in a manner that is false or untruthful." Expanding on the implications, Lovell said: "The fact that the big screen caught the CEO doing something embarrassing or immoral in public is on him." To date, neither Byron nor Cabot have commented on the footage. However, Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin seemed to allude to the event with a bit of playful banter during his next show. Without directly mentioning the incident, he jokingly cautioned the crowd about the possibility of being displayed on the big screen, advising: "Please, if you haven't done your makeup, do your makeup now!"

Fake Or Fortune guest speechless as 'painting by Sir Winston Churchill' worth huge sum

A man who paid a fraction of that could make a life-changing amount if the picture of Clemintine Churchill is proved to have been painted by the revered wartime Prime Minister An amateur art collector who claims he has found a lost painting by Sir Winston Churchill is told it could be worth more than £600,000. ‌ Barry James appears on the BBC1 show Fake Or Fortune tonight (MON) with his intriguing picture. He tells presenter Fiona Bruce and international art dealer Phil Mould that he picked it up for just £140 in an antiques market in Ardingly near Gatwick, three years ago because he liked 'the colours and composition'. ‌ But it was only later when it took it out of the frame that he found a mysterious inscription on the back which read: 'This painting of Mrs Winston Churchill on wall of sunken garden at Hurstmonceux (CORR) Castle, Sussex, by The Right Hon. Winston S Churchill. June 1916.' ‌ It shows what is thought to be Sir Winston's wife Clementine perched on a wall reading a book in the pink flowered gardens of the castle. Barry, from West Sussex, hopes the BBC series, returning for its 13th run, can validate it. In the BBC show, shocked Barry is told that paintings by Churchill – who was British PM from 1940-45 and 1951-55 - can fetch millions of pounds. In 2021 Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie sold one - The Tower Of The Koutoubia Mosque, painted in Marrakesh during WWII - for a record £7million. ‌ And Barry is informed that if his picture is found to be an original then at auction it could make more than £600,000. The TV duo embark on a search to find out if the artist really was war leader Churchill. Records show how he took up painting in 1915 - in water colours to begin with and later in oils - after he had completed his military service during WW1 and narrowly escaped death. He looked on his new hobby as something that took him away from the stress of his high powered life and it became a source of relaxation. Fiona, 61, delves into a book written by his friend Violet Bonham Carter called Winston Churchill As I Knew Him, in which she mentions that the politician stayed at the castle with his paints and brushes. ‌ The author even writes that he was there as a guest in 1916 – but she mentions August rather than June. Undeterred, Fiona visits the castle to locate the exact spot where Clementine would have sat on the wall in the garden to be painted. Meanwhile art dealer Phil does some digging to check that it is not stolen – and gets the all clear. A further mystery is uncovered when the artwork is x-rayed and another painting is discovered underneath. Experts believe it looks like a painting of a castle – possibly the very one where Winston and his wife stayed. This news is not unwelcome as the statesman was well-known for re-using canvases. But some doubt is thrown into the mix when it is discovered that the handwriting on the back is not Churchill's but that of Conservative politician Colonel Claude Lowther, who bought Herstmonceux and restored it – and invited his friend to stay there in 1916. Barry, who is married and is a carer with a disabled son, admits: 'If the painting is real, I'd probably end up reluctantly selling it, obviously for the family. We have always wanted to go to Niagara Falls. Our son is disabled and I think he'd enjoy something like that.' Viewers can find out if the painting is real on the new series of Fake Or Fortune, tonight at 9pm.
