Tesla sales decline in Europe for fifth straight month as rivals gain ground
Tesla's new car sales in Europe fell 27.9% in May from a year earlier as fully-electric vehicle sales in the region jumped 27.2%, with the US EV maker's revised Model Y yet to show signs of reviving the brand's fortunes.
Overall car sales in Europe rose 1.9%, with the strongest growth coming from plug-in hybrids and cars powered by alternative fuels, data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (Acea) showed.
Tesla's European sales have fallen for five straight months as customers switch to cheaper Chinese EVs and, in some cases, protest against CEO Elon Musk's politics.
Tesla's European market share dropped to 1.2% in May from 1.8% a year ago.
The revised Model Y is meant to revamp the company's ageing model range as traditional automakers and Chinese rivals launch EVs at a rapid pace amid trade tensions.
May new car sales in the EU, Britain and the European Free Trade Association rose to 1.11-million vehicles after a 0.3% dip in April, Acea data showed.
Registrations at Chinese state-owned SAIC Motor and Germany's BMW rose 22.5% and 5.6% respectively, while they fell 23% at Japan's Mazda.
In the EU alone, total car sales have fallen 0.6% so far this year.
That comes despite growing demand for EVs, with registrations of battery-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid-electric (HEV) cars rising 26.1%, 15% and 19.8% respectively.
EU sales of BEVs, HEVs and PHEVs combined accounted for 58.9% of passenger car registrations in May, up from 48.9% in May 2024.
Among the largest EU markets, new car sales in Spain and Germany rose 18.6% and 1.2% respectively, while in France and Italy they dropped by 12.3% and 0.1%.
In Britain, registrations were up 1.6%.

The Chinese president noted that he co-chaired the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye last September, leading China-Africa relations into a new phase of jointly building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era. Xi also said that China and Senegal should firmly support each other's independent and self-reliant development paths, strengthen party-to-party and governance exchanges, and continuously consolidate the foundation of political mutual trust. China and Senegal are partners and good brothers on the road to development and revitalization, Xi said, adding that China is willing to work closely with Senegal to implement the 10 partnership actions between China and Africa, carry out more people's livelihood projects, and encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Senegal's renewable energy, digital infrastructure and other sectors, becoming partners for win-win cooperation. Noting China and Senegal each have their own unique culture, Xi said both countries should take the opportunity of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges to strengthen exchanges in fields such as culture, education, tourism, sports and youth, and bring their peoples closer together, becoming friends of mutual civilizational learning. Both China and Senegal must firmly defend the international system with the United Nations at its core, practice true multilateralism, uphold global governance featuring extensive consultation, joint contributions and shared benefits, and jointly promote world peace, prosperity, and progress, Xi said. After beating Ford Ranger Raptor, double cab will have a hard time holding onto its crown. The BYD Shark this month put its money where its mouth is and dethroned the Ford Ranger Raptor in spectacular fashion as the fastest production bakkie in South Africa. The 321kW/650Nm BYD Shark, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) which showed up for the fight as the most powerful local bakkie, destroyed the Raptor on the drag strip. It clocked a 0 to 100km/h time of 5.66 seconds to better the 6.90 seconds set by the Ford Ranger Raptor two years ago. The 292kW/583Nm Raptor took the crown from the 190kW VW Amarok back in 2021. Compared to the new benchmark, the Amarok's 8.14 seconds seems very modest. The Maxus eTerron 9 is a full electric bakkie that produces 325kW of power and 700Nm of torque.
