Tesla sales decline in Europe for fifth straight month as rivals gain ground

TimesLIVE4 days ago

Tesla's new car sales in Europe fell 27.9% in May from a year earlier as fully-electric vehicle sales in the region jumped 27.2%, with the US EV maker's revised Model Y yet to show signs of reviving the brand's fortunes.
Overall car sales in Europe rose 1.9%, with the strongest growth coming from plug-in hybrids and cars powered by alternative fuels, data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (Acea) showed.
Tesla's European sales have fallen for five straight months as customers switch to cheaper Chinese EVs and, in some cases, protest against CEO Elon Musk's politics.
Tesla's European market share dropped to 1.2% in May from 1.8% a year ago.
The revised Model Y is meant to revamp the company's ageing model range as traditional automakers and Chinese rivals launch EVs at a rapid pace amid trade tensions.
May new car sales in the EU, Britain and the European Free Trade Association rose to 1.11-million vehicles after a 0.3% dip in April, Acea data showed.
Registrations at Chinese state-owned SAIC Motor and Germany's BMW rose 22.5% and 5.6% respectively, while they fell 23% at Japan's Mazda.
In the EU alone, total car sales have fallen 0.6% so far this year.
That comes despite growing demand for EVs, with registrations of battery-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid-electric (HEV) cars rising 26.1%, 15% and 19.8% respectively.
EU sales of BEVs, HEVs and PHEVs combined accounted for 58.9% of passenger car registrations in May, up from 48.9% in May 2024.
Among the largest EU markets, new car sales in Spain and Germany rose 18.6% and 1.2% respectively, while in France and Italy they dropped by 12.3% and 0.1%.
In Britain, registrations were up 1.6%.

Image: Ding Lin/ Xinhua / Xinhua via AFP China is willing to work with Senegal to strengthen solidarity and cooperation, deepen their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, bring more benefits to the two peoples, and inject fresh impetus into China-Africa friendship and Global South cooperation, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday. Xi made the remarks when meeting with Prime Minister of Senegal Ousmane Sonko, who is in China to attend the 2025 Summer Davos Forum, in Beijing. The Chinese president noted that he co-chaired the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye last September, leading China-Africa relations into a new phase of jointly building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era. Xi also said that China and Senegal should firmly support each other's independent and self-reliant development paths, strengthen party-to-party and governance exchanges, and continuously consolidate the foundation of political mutual trust. China and Senegal are partners and good brothers on the road to development and revitalization, Xi said, adding that China is willing to work closely with Senegal to implement the 10 partnership actions between China and Africa, carry out more people's livelihood projects, and encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Senegal's renewable energy, digital infrastructure and other sectors, becoming partners for win-win cooperation. Noting China and Senegal each have their own unique culture, Xi said both countries should take the opportunity of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges to strengthen exchanges in fields such as culture, education, tourism, sports and youth, and bring their peoples closer together, becoming friends of mutual civilizational learning. Both China and Senegal must firmly defend the international system with the United Nations at its core, practice true multilateralism, uphold global governance featuring extensive consultation, joint contributions and shared benefits, and jointly promote world peace, prosperity, and progress, Xi said. Sonko said China is a reliable partner for Senegal, and that the two countries have always respected each other, united in mutual assistance, with stable and resilient bilateral relations and good progress in cooperation in various fields. Senegal firmly adheres to the one-China principle and looks forward to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership with China, advancing the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, energy and other fields, and contributing to Senegal's economic and social development, Sonko said. Both China and Senegal are members of the Global South with shared values, and Senegal is willing to closely cooperate with China on international and regional issues, firmly becoming China's strategic partner, promoting international fairness and justice, and safeguarding the common interests of the Global South, Sonko added. Delron Buckley spearheads Arminia Bielefeld's mission for youth empowerment in South Africa

The celebrated German football club Arminia Bielefeld will bring a delegation to Johannesburg to embark on a mission of youth empowerment in South Africa and international partnerships. At the forefront of the delegation will be former Bafana Bafana left-wing Delron Buckley, who spent two seasons at Arminia Bielefeld before being signed by rivals Borussia Dortmund. Arminia has had strong ties with other Bafana Bafana players such as Rowen Fernández, Sibusiso Zuma, and Siyabonga Nkosi over the years. The agenda for the trip, which starts on Monday and continues until Thursday, includes an array of community-focused activities, signalling a commitment beyond mere sport. A scheduled training session at the Bolobathaba Academy will see local youth engage with Arminia staff, bringing together valuable practices from Europe and South Africa. The academy, known for its dedication to the development of young athletes, is perfectly positioned to fulfil the club's objectives. Included in the delegation areArminia Bielefeld managing director Christoph Wortmann, alongside Nico Luft, director of sales. Wortmann said the initiative is not just about football; it strives to deepen youth development, foster educational endeavours, and create substantial international partnerships. Arminia Bielefeld will work closely with club ambassador Buckley, whose influence and connection to both communities serve as the impetus for this collaborative effort. Furthering the investment in youth education, the visit features a coaching workshop dedicated to grassroots and youth coaches, focusing on modern player development strategies. It will enhance the coaching skills of local leaders and promote sustainable practices within their communities. Additionally, the delegation plans to host an after-work networking event where members of Johannesburg's business community, NGOs, and sports organisations can engage in dialogue. This collaboration aims to forge new economic opportunities and nurture relationships that may yield future sponsorship and investment prospects. Wortmann highlighted Buckley's vital role in connecting South African youth with European expertise: 'Delron Buckley embodies the connection between South Africa and Arminia Bielefeld like no one else. We're proud to work with him on initiatives that go far beyond football – by empowering young people, supporting education, and building lasting bridges between continents.' As one of Germany's most esteemed football institutions, Arminia Bielefeld, founded in 1905, has always directed its efforts towards a broad spectrum of social and international initiatives. The club remains dedicated to promoting education, inclusion, and cross-border cooperation through sport, exemplifying how the game can be a catalyst for change. This summer, Arminia Bielefeld is not just kicking off community initiatives in South Africa; they're sowing the seeds for a brighter future in youth football and education.

PODCAST: How long can BYD Shark stay SA's fastest bakkie?

After beating Ford Ranger Raptor, double cab will have a hard time holding onto its crown. The BYD Shark this month put its money where its mouth is and dethroned the Ford Ranger Raptor in spectacular fashion as the fastest production bakkie in South Africa. The 321kW/650Nm BYD Shark, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) which showed up for the fight as the most powerful local bakkie, destroyed the Raptor on the drag strip. It clocked a 0 to 100km/h time of 5.66 seconds to better the 6.90 seconds set by the Ford Ranger Raptor two years ago. The 292kW/583Nm Raptor took the crown from the 190kW VW Amarok back in 2021. Compared to the new benchmark, the Amarok's 8.14 seconds seems very modest. Road Test Editor Mark Jones explains how the Chinese bakkie managed to top the Ford Ranger Raptor is almost every aspect of the test. It must be said that the Raptor's real forte is not on tarmac, but off-road. It is a performance off-roader, which just happened to the fastest on the tarmac too because of its sheer power. At the time of its introduction, it featured a full 102kW of power more than the Amarok and The Citizen Motoring did not see its record in any danger any time soon. The JAC T9 PHEV produces 290kW/670Nm, while the range-extending electric Riddara RD6 features 315kW/595Nm. The Maxus eTerron 9 is a full electric bakkie that produces 325kW of power and 700Nm of torque.
