Auckland batter
Bevon Jacobs
has big ambitions but this year he has been on periphery watching, learning and biding his time before he gets the breakthrough to take the next step in his cricket career.
Jacobs has been close to making his international debut and close to playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but he has yet to get on the park for the Black Caps or the Mumbai Indians.
He was a
surprise pick up in the IPL
in November as the lowest priced New Zealander in the auction and the only one not have played for the Black Caps yet. The following month he also caught the attention of the national selectors and was called into the New Zealand side for a T20 series against Sri Lanka.
Jacobs did not get game time in his first stint with the Black Caps but is hopeful that will change next month during a
T20 Tri-Series in Zimbabwe
under new coach
Rob Walter.
Included in a touring squad for the first time, Jacobs sees this as the first step towards the goal of being selected for next year's T20 World Cup.
The 23-year-old believes his experience in the IPL, despite not playing a game, was valuable. He trained alongside Indian captain Rohit Sharma, faced fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the nets, travelled around with Black Caps captain Mitch Santner and former Black Cap Trent Boult and watched big-hitting English wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow in action.
He said it was "pinch me moments" mixed with recognition of what being alongside that calibre of player and their "crazy amount of knowledge" could do for his own game.
"I got three months there to learn new facets of my game and I definitely think I've made those learnings and improvements. Obviously, implementing it into my game is going to be a longer work in progress but taking away from the technical stuff there is also a lot of mental mental learnings that I've got from it as well, which I know will change me, just for the time being so hopefully I can bring what I've learned from there into into the series."
Jacobs is unsure what it will take to make a Black Caps playing 11.
"If I had the exact answer I'd give it to you, but for me, at this stage, it's just about doing the 1 percenters right, doing what I can, and putting my best foot forward, and if that leads to me getting selection, and if Rob thinks I'm ready, then I'm happy to go about it."
Jacobs is versatile, which could be in his favour.
"I've had almost two different sort of roles, starting off in that finisher role that's where Mumbai picked up a point of difference for me, which I find really cool.
"And then obviously, when I came to Auckland, a little bit more moving up into the middle order. Either way, I think for me, maybe that skill set, what's seen at the moment is trying to finish off an innings I'm just going to try and get better at that, step by step and hopefully that's what gets me into the side."

F1: Liam Lawson delivers in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying

Racing Bulls' New Zealand driver Liam Lawson (R) signs an autograph for a fan at the Red Bull Ring race track in Spielberg, Austria, on June 28, 2025, ahead of the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix Photo: JOE KLAMAR It is a day to cherish for New Zealand driver Liam Lawson, who has nailed his best qualifying perfomance of the Formula 1 season. He will start sixth on the grid for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, one place behind his career-best performance, which was fifth in Singapore last year. Lawson will also take satisfaction on finishing one spot ahead of his former Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen, and his relief to finally show he is a capable driver was evident after the session concluded. "Everything's felt really good, I've felt really good and we've done a lot of work on the car and on my side as well, just to make it more comfortable for me. "It's nice to show it today, but obviously tomorrow is obviously the important day." The day did not start so well for Lawson, as he finished 11th-fastest in the third practice session. Lawson was third-fastest in the first qualiyfing phase, then ninth in the second, to ensure he would be lining up his Racing Bulls car in the final qualification, where he sealed his top six finish. "The last couple of weekends the pace has been there through practice, just in quali it wasn't ... so it's cool to get it across the line," Lawson said. McLaren's Lando Norris was the fastest driver to secure pole position, ahead of Ferrari driver Charles LeClerc and Australian and championship leader Oscar Piastri. Norris, who needs a strong result after a collision with Piastri in Canada two weeks ago, is 22 points behind the Australian in the championship after 10 of 24 races. "I did what I planned to do and when I plan to do something and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well," said Norris, whose pole time of one minute 03.971 seconds was 0.521 quicker than Leclerc's lap. "The feeling I had today was a feeling I've missed for quite a long time, the feeling I have behind the wheel, in the car, the understanding of where the grip is and how to exploit it. That showed, gaining performance and in lap time." It was the biggest gap so far this season between first and second on the grid and the pole was the Briton's third of the campaign, after Australia and Monaco where he won both races with the fastest lap. "Lando has been very quick all weekend and it would have been a tough challenge (to beat him) but I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to be on the front row," said Piastri. "But we still have some opportunities tomorrow. I'm not planning on finishing third, that's for sure." George Russell, last year's race winner, qualified fifth for Mercedes and kept the place after stewards gave him a warning for a pitlane breach. NRL: Warriors suffer back-to-back defeats with loss to Brisbane Broncos

Photo: Tertius Pickard/ NZ Warriors have slumped to consecutive defeats for the first time this NRL season, falling 26-12 to Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. While the result sees their grip on a top-four spot now in jeopardy, they also lost the services of arguably their two best players - half Luke Metcalf and fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad - as they fought back into the contest in the second half. Nicoll-Klokstad did not return to the field after halftime with a knee injury, while Metcalf was helped off the park in the closing minutes, after he was nailed in a tackle by second-rower Brendan Piakura. Brisbane were on top from the opening kickoff, when Warriors forward Marata Niukore dropped a pass in front of his own posts and the home side took advantage for centre Katoni Staggs to score. Ill discipline continued to cost the Warriors, as they allowed their opponents across for two more tries and 18 unanswered points in the first half. Five-eighth Chanel Harris-Tavita seemed to have scored before the break, when he chased a kick and gathered the loose ball, but replays showed he never forced for the try. They conceded a try on halftime to centre Gehamet Shibasaki, which proved a crippling blow, but emerged from the sheds with renewed vigour. They finally broke their drought, when winger Roger Tuviasa-Sheck crossed in the corner, and had another, when second-rower Leka Halasima chased a kick, gathered uncontested and scored. Down 20-12, with 15 minutes remaining, the Warriors still had a chance, but could not capitalise on their opportunities. Shibasaki crossed late for a second try, putting him atop the NRL tryscoring rankings, which finally sealed the win for Brisbane. Despite the defeat, the Warriors are fourth, still four points clear of their nearest chasers on the table - Sydney Roosters. They won't drop out of the top four this week or next, when they will bank two points from their bye, but with only two points covering the next five teams, they need to find form against Wests Tigers in two weeks or risk being swamped over the closing rounds.
