Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest gave up three unearned runs in the eighth inning before exiting Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds with a pinkie finger injury. Vest admitted afterward he had 'no idea what the extent of the injury was.'

Initial tests didn't reveal anything too concerning, and manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday on MLB Network Radio that he expects Vest to avoid a stint on the 15-day injured list, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
'I'm expecting to have him available in some capacity and not go on the injured list,' Hinch said. 'Things can always change if we get more information. But so far, so good.'

Even before Sunday's defensive meltdown, the Tigers' bullpen had struggled this month, posting a 4.98 ERA — the fifth worst in baseball. Still, Vest and Tommy Kahnle have formed one of the more reliable back-end duos, with Vest carrying a 1.83 ERA and Kahnle a 1.50 ERA.

Losing Vest would have been a costly blow, particularly on the heels of news that rookie starter Jackson Jobe will miss the rest of the season following Tommy John surgery.
Vest, who leads the Tigers with 12 saves, including each of the team's last three — remains day-to-day. Kahnle will likely be next in line for save opportunities if needed.

Philadelphia 76ers Land Auburn Superstar with 35th Pick in 2025 NBA Draft

Philadelphia 76ers Land Auburn Superstar with 35th Pick in 2025 NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After a stellar five-year college career, ending with a three-season run with the Auburn Tigers, Johni Broome is headed to the NBA. Advertisement On Thursday, during the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers selected Broome with the 35th overall pick. Broome becomes the first player from Auburn drafted into the NBA since Jabari Smith Jr. and Walker Kessler in 2022. Last season, Broome earned SEC Player of the Year honors while becoming a consensus first-team All-American. He led Auburn to one of their best seasons in program history, ending in a Final Four appearance. The Karl Malone Award winner scored 18.6 points per game while leading the SEC in rebounds (10.8) and blocks (2.1). He shot 28% from deep on a career-high 2.8 treys during the 2024-25 season. Before joining Auburn in 2022, he spent two seasons with the Morehead State Eagles, winning Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player in his final year. Meanwhile, superstar guard Tyrese Maxey played just 52 games, while veteran Paul George failed to appear in more than half the team's games. Former first-round pick Jared McCain was also limited to just 23 games of action. Nevertheless, Philadelphia finished the season 24-58 but will look for a bounce-back season starting next winter. In the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft, the 76ers selected guard VJ Edgecombe from the Baylor Bears. Auburn Lands Former 5-Star Recruit Out of Transfer Portal

Auburn Lands Former 5-Star Recruit Out of Transfer Portal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's just year three for head coach Hugh Freeze, but the consensus among the Auburn Tigers faithful is that time is running out for the longtime bench boss. Advertisement Last season, in his second year with Auburn, Freeze and the Tigers posted a 5-7 record, marking their fourth consecutive campaign with seven losses. On Monday, Freeze and his staff made a significant move to help snap the program's unprecedented stretch of uninspiring football. According to On3, former Texas A&M Aggies safety and 2022 five-star prospect Jacoby Mathews will head to The Plains. © Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports Mathews' addition marks a massive splash for Auburn's 2025 outlook. The safety joined Texas A&M in 2022 under defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, tallying 25 tackles, three passes defended, and one fumble recovery. As a sophomore, the 6-foot-2 third-level defender recorded 41 tackles, four passes defended, and registered his first interception. Advertisement Mathews left A&M last year, enrolling at a Junior College before entertaining the Auburn Tigers. Durkin, Mathews' play caller from 2022 to 2023, is now working for Auburn under the same title. The former Aggies defender will join an Auburn team that will welcome nearly two dozen incoming transfers. Quarterback Jackson Arnold, offensive playmaker Eric Singleton Jr., and wide receiver Horatio Fields headline the group, with the trio expected to play a significant role in returning the SEC program to relevance. Mathews will compete with Kaleb Harris and Sylvester Smith for playing time in the secondary. Freeze and Company also added defensive backs Raion Strader and Taye Seymour through the transfer portal.
