KUALA LUMPUR: The government's short-term and long-term action plans to address geopolitical tensions in the Middle East will be a key focus in today's Dewan Rakyat sitting.
According to the Order Paper, Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) will raise the issue during the Minister's Question Time.
Another significant topic involves Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), who will question the Prime Minister on how the 2002 International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on Ligitan and Sipadan Islands could affect maritime boundary negotiations with Indonesia in the Sulawesi Sea, including sovereignty over blocks ND6 and ND7.
During the oral answers session, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) will seek clarification from the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister on government measures to tackle US tariff issues involving state governments.
Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) will ask the Agriculture and Food Security Minister about savings from subsidy cuts and their impact on the egg market.
The session will proceed with the first reading of the Poisons (Amendment) Bill 2025, followed by the second reading of the Street, Drainage and Building (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Whistleblower Protection (Amendment) 2025.
The Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament is set for 24 days, with the 13th Malaysia Plan slated for tabling on July 31. - Bernama

PN endorses United Opposition Front to coordinate stand on key national issues

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional's (PN) Supreme Council has reviewed and endorsed a proposal to form Barisan Pembangkang Bersatu (BPB), or the United Opposition Front, aimed at forging consensus on key national and public interest issues among political parties outside the ruling coalition. The proposal, presented by PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today, outlines the formation of a structured platform to enable opposition parties to take joint positions on matters affecting the people and the country. In a statement issued after the meeting, PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said the objective was to coordinate efforts among non-government political entities and align their responses to issues of national concern through a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility. "The Supreme Council has agreed in principle to the formation of this opposition front and will initiate follow-up discussions with other political parties outside the government bloc," he said via the statement posted on PN's official Facebook page. He said the council viewed the proposal as a step forward in strengthening the voice of the opposition and ensuring the concerns of ordinary Malaysians are brought to the forefront of national discourse. "The supreme council sees it as a timely and necessary move to restore balance to the country's democratic process. We must unite all political forces outside the ruling bloc to ensure there is a credible, structured and effective opposition that can speak and act on behalf of the people," he said. Azmin added that further discussions would be held with other political parties and civil society groups before proceeding with the initiative. He also said that earlier in the meeting, which was attended by top leaders of all component parties, the council discussed preparations for the upcoming Sabah state election. "A central committee, chaired by opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, was formed to coordinate seat distribution, campaign strategies, and manifesto development. Among the concerns raised were over the long-standing infrastructure issues in Sabah, especially water supply, electricity, and road access, that are said to have burdened the people for far too long," he said. Azmin also reiterated that PN fully supported the Himpunan Turun Anwar rally, describing it as a peaceful gathering reflecting the people's demand for real change. "This is not merely a protest. It is the people's expression of frustration and hope for a better future, free from economic oppression and authoritarian governance," he added.

More EDC terminals needed to facilitate Sara aid processing, says S'wak PH man

Ling says in the context of Sabah and Sarawak, having a backup EDC terminal is especially important for retail shops in rural areas. MIRI (July 25): Selected retail traders included in the Rahmah Basic Contribution (Sara) aid programme should have more than one Electronic Data Capture (EDC) terminal, and a barcode scanner as a backup in case of equipment failure. An EDC terminal is a device used to process electronic payments for Sara recipients. According to Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak secretary Alan Ling, in the context of Sabah and Sarawak, having a backup EDC terminal is especially important for retail shops in rural areas. However, he also describes the requirement to qualify for a backup EDC terminal as 'unreasonable and illogical'. 'I have been told that only those with over 120 transactions per day are eligible to apply for a second terminal. 'I think this requirement is nonsensical; this is ridiculous. 'We want to make things easier for the people, not make them queue up for long periods at the counter,' said the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak secretary in a statement. Adding on, he said that he had contacted Yayasan myKASIH regarding this issue. 'Yayasan myKASIH has been entrusted by the federal government to manage the Sara aid via MyKad, enabling the purchase of basic necessities at selected retail stores,' he added. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a one-off SaraRM100 aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above. This marked the first time that cash assistance was being disbursed universally to all adult citizens via their MyKad. Back to the EDC terminal, Ling said some retailers were only provided with a single terminal. 'This is insufficient in handling peak-hour transactions. 'That's why I got in touch with them (Yayasan myKASIH), asking them whether or not we could request just one backup terminal because traders had been informed that in the event of a technical issue, the equipment must be sent to Kuala Lumpur for repairs, which could take time and cause much inconvenience to both the traders and the consumers.' Therefore, for Sabah and Sarawak, Ling suggested that an agency or non-governmental organisation (NGO) be appointed to handle the distribution of EDC terminals and barcode scanners under the Sara programme. 'This would ensure better understanding of local needs and challenges, and allow for more responsive support in the event of technical issues. 'It would also enhance the effectiveness of the federal government's initiative through the involvement of local agencies or NGOs. 'This is a request from the people and from the traders, for the benefit of all. 'We need sufficient terminals and accessible technical support, given the geographical scale and location of Sabah and Sarawak,' he added. Alan Ling EDC terminal Electronic Data Capture SARA

RM44.83 mln spent on farm road repairs in Sabah, Sarawak from 2022-June 2025, says ministry

The ministry said that 92 of the projects were carried out in Sabah, involving 164.8km of farm roads at the cost of RM29.97 million, while 39 road repair projects, covering 90km of farm roads, were implemented in Sarawak, costing RM14.86 million. KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) has spent RM44.83 million on 131 farm road repair projects in Sabah and Sarawak from 2022 until June 30, 2025. The ministry said that 92 of the projects were carried out in Sabah, involving 164.8km of farm roads at the cost of RM29.97 million, while 39 road repair projects, covering 90km of farm roads, were implemented in Sarawak, costing RM14.86 million. 'These projects have benefited oil palm, rubber, cocoa and pepper smallholders in both states,' KPK said in a written reply posted on the Parliament's website yesterday. The ministry said this in response to a question from Oscar Ling Chai Yew (PH-Sibu) on its plans to assist the plantation sector in repairing farm roads in Sabah and Sarawak. Meanwhile, KPK said it has submitted an application to the Ministry of Economy under the special project initiative to ensure more farm road repair projects can be implemented under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). 'KPK remains attentive to the plights of smallholders in the agricommodity sector nationwide, including in Sabah and Sarawak, who face difficulties transporting their crops when the farm roads are damaged,' it added. – Bernama 13th Malaysia Plan farm road KPK sabah Sarawak smallholders
