Air India plane crash: 144 victims identified by DNA tests, recovery efforts intensify
Ahmedabad: Four days after the devastating crash of Air India flight AI-171 en route from Ahmedabad to London, authorities have confirmed that 144 DNA samples have been successfully matched as of noon Tuesday, according to Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi.
The identification process is being led by a combined team from the State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University, working around the clock to bring clarity to grieving families.
"This is a highly sensitive and emotional task. Every match is not just a technical confirmation, but a step toward giving closure to families waiting in anguish," an official from the forensic unit said.
Emergency response teams remain stationed at the crash site in Meghaninagar, where investigators continue to recover personal belongings and body fragments amidst the wreckage.
Authorities have stated that all efforts are being made to ensure the dignity of the deceased and transparency in communication with the victims' relatives.
Tata Group, which re-acquired Air India in 2022, has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs one crore to the families of each of the deceased from the AI‑171 crash near Ahmedabad. In addition, Air India has immediately released an interim relief payout of Rs 25 lakh per family -- and to the lone survivor -- to cover urgent needs.
The group will also cover all medical expenses for the injured and pledged financial support for rebuilding a damaged hostel at BJ Medical College. Chairman N. Chandrasekaran described it as 'one of the darkest days in the Tata Group's history.'
As of June 17, rescue and recovery efforts at the Ahmedabad crash site of Air India flight AI-171 remain intense and deeply coordinated. Over 300 firefighters, supported by 60 fire vehicles and 20 water bowsers from Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, ONGC, and other nearby agencies, continue to clear debris and extinguish smouldering wreckage.
On the ground, three NDRF teams, 150 CRPF officers, Indian Army personnel, and teams from the CISF, BSF, and Western Railway Disaster Management are conducting systematic searches for remains and missing belongings.
Specialised sniffer dogs are aiding in the recovery of human remains, while Ahmedabad Police, responding to disturbing reports, have deployed animal rescue teams to safely relocate stray dogs scavenging at the crash site.

Vigilance detects 2 farmhouses of officer spread over 46 acres
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance on Monday launched simultaneous raids on the properties and office of a Joint Director-rank officer at eight locations in three districts in connection with its probe into his alleged disproportionate assets. The Vigilance department launched the search operations on the properties of the Soil Conservation and Watershed Development Joint Director, Dayanidhi Bagh, following allegations that he amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. The official was a former Project Director (PD) of the Watershed department in Rayagada. 'Simultaneous searches are being conducted by Odisha Vigilance officials led by 10 deputy superintendents of police, eight inspectors, 10 ASIs and other supporting staffers on the strength of search warrants issued by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhawanipatna,' an officer said. The raids are being carried out at three places in Bhubaneswar, two locations in Kalahandi district and three places in Nabarangpur, the Vigilance officer said. During the raids so far, the Vigilance sleuths detected two farmhouses, a shopping complex and an under-construction building in Nabarangpur district, one flat and a building in Bhubaneswar, 11 acres of land on the outskirts of Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district and bank deposits of Rs 55 lakh. Out of the two farmhouses, one located at Bijraguda is spread over 40 acres of land worth Rs 1 crore, while another farmhouse is spread over 6 acres of land at Phatakote in the same district and is worth Rs 34 lakh. On May 22 this year, the anti-corruption department had arrested four officials of the office of the Project Director of the Watershed department in Rayagada for allegedly embezzling Rs 20 lakh of government money without excavating 23 ponds in different villages of Kashipur block in Rayagada district under MGNREGA. Since then, the former Project Director of the Watershed department in Rayagada was under the scanner of the Vigilance department.

Despite submitting a written complaint, no investigation was carried out, and a penalty of Rs 1 lakh was added to his latest bill. Tiwari's neighbour, Mahendra Singh Raghuvanshi, received a bill of Rs 68 lakh. In slum areas like Agya Ram Colony, several labourer families with limited electricity usage have reported bills in lakhs. Many of them previously paid monthly bills of just Rs 100 to Rs 200. Residents allege that the smart meters were installed without prior notice or consent, and that complaints to the electricity department and local authorities have gone unanswered. According to officials from the electricity department, the inflated bills are the result of a software glitch in the billing system. They say that billing errors have been identified in around 15 cases. The smart meters were installed under a central government scheme aimed at ensuring accurate and transparent billing.

BJP alleges irregularities in machinery purchase in TTD
Tirupati: BJP senior leader and TTD trust board member G Bhanu Prakash Reddy alleged irregularities in the purchase of machinery by TTD for its Srinivasa Ayurvedic Pharmacy located in Srinivasa Mangapuram 12 km from here. Speaking to media persons here on Monday, Bhanu Prakash said in 2022, machines with total cost of Rs 3.9 crore were purchased for production of Ayurvedic medicines, including powder and also tablets but they were of inferior quality. All the machines like grinders, packaging machines broke down resulting in loss to TTD. The machinery was purchased as part of increasing the production of Ayurvedic medicines in Srinivasa Pharmacy set up by TTD for its Ayurvedic Hospitals and also Ayush(Government of India) to get revenue to TTD. Surprisingly, the TTD authorities remained silent on the defective machines causing loss to TTD. He alleged that this was due to political pressure as the supplier of the machines enjoyed the support of the then ruling YSRCP leaders and the machines were purchased for the Srinivasa Pharmacy to benefit a YSRCP leader, he alleged. Bhanu Prakash Reddy said he had already brought the irregularities in the Srinivasa Pharmacy machines purchase to TTD chairman's notice to order an inquiry. On his part, Reddy said he is filing a complaint with the police in a day or two on the irregularities. He dared the former TTD chairman and YSRCP senior leader Y V Subba Reddy, during whose tenure machines were bought, and his successor Bhumana Karunakar Reddy for public debate on the irregularities that took place in TTD during YSRCP period. 'The entire 5 year rule of YSRCP was full of scams in TTD, be it Parakamani, Thulabharam, various constructions and purchase of machinery in SVIMS and in Srinivasa Pharmacy,' he said, adding that the NDA alliance will unearth all these and see all the guilty were punished.
