Want to smell good? 6 big tips to ace the latest scent stacking trend

Hindustan Times17-06-2025
Ever caught a whiff of someone's perfume that made your head turn in awe and wonder, as the scent still lingers with you for a while? The secret behind the magnetic scent trail that stopped you in your tracks is scent stacking. It's not random from a single bottle, but is actually a combination, a multi-layered olfactory identity that is carefully crafted to be cohesive.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Nitin Jain, founder, La Pink, unpacked the trend of scent stacking and how it is changing the way we wear fragrance, making it more customisable and personal.
He explained, 'Scent stacking or fragrance layering refers to the technique of layering multiple fragrance products to create a bespoke scent. Instead of wearing one perfume or mist, you apply different ones in a specific order, starting with the lightest and building towards the deepest, to develop a multi-dimensional fragrance. It is an emerging trend that's gaining popularity for its customisability. Much like mixing cocktails, it's about blending different fragrance elements to create a scent that's uniquely yours. While the practice isn't new in the world of perfumery, it's now becoming more accessible through layering body mists, lotions, and sprays, especially among Gen Z and millennials who love personalisation.'
Nitin Jain shared a detailed breakdown on how to go about scent stacking, covering all the fundamentals, from the products needed to elaborating on the different scent notes:
To stack scents effectively, you can use:
Rule: When stacking, you want to build from light (top) to heavy (base), layering in harmony rather than overpowering each note.
i. Citrus body wash (top)
ii. Floral mist (middle)
iii. Vanilla perfume (base)
Here are a few well-balanced scent layering ideas you can try, based on mood, occasion, and fragrance profile:
Layering tip: Start with a citrus-vanilla mist, follow with a musky floral lotion, and finish with a light fruity fragrance. This combination gives a soft, sweet scent that's expressive but not overwhelming.
Best for: Men or unisex, suited for outdoor activities, office commutes, or gym.
Layering tip: Begin with an aqua-citrus body spray, add a clean marine-infused body lotion, and finish with an amber-forward light perfume or mist for long-lasting freshness and energy.
Layering tip: Use a floral body mist, add a fruity-chypre scented cream or lotion, and top with a patchouli-amber light perfume for a dreamy, radiant profile that's festive and sophisticated.
Layering tip: Start with an oud-leather mist, follow with a warm amber-rich body lotion, and finish with a hint of citrus-floral perfume to create a deeply intense and commanding evening scent.
Nitin shared the final tip, saying, 'Before committing to a full body routine, test your stack on a small area to make sure it evolves well and doesn't clash with your body chemistry. Keep notes of your favourite combinations to build your personal wardrobe.'

India's Online Gaming Boom Is a Soft Power Opportunity—But Responsible Play Must Come First

India's online gaming industry is where culture, tech, and policy converge. With the right guardrails, it could be our next big global export. News18 India's online gaming industry is undergoing a meteoric rise—with over 590 million users and growing. As one of the largest digital consumer markets in the world, the country is fast emerging as a global gaming hub. But beyond the headline numbers lies a deeper story: gaming is not just a tech success—it's becoming a medium of cultural influence and an avenue for India to project soft power globally. In the latest episode of Game OK Please – Khelo Dimaag Se, industry leaders Salone Sehgal (Founding General Partner, Lumikai), Rajeev Dhuddu (Partner, PwC), and Meghna Bal (Director, Esya Centre) dive into what it will take to sustain this momentum—and do so responsibly. From Pastime to Cultural Catalyst 'Gaming is interactive entertainment," says Sehgal, 'and it's increasingly how Gen Z and Gen Alpha engage with the world." With two-thirds of Indian gamers from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and women accounting for nearly 40% of users, the profile of the Indian gamer is rapidly diversifying. For India to define its cultural voice in gaming globally, Sehgal argues that platforms must invest in inclusive storytelling, creator diversity, and IP that reflects India's lived experiences. 'This isn't just about consumption," she says, 'it's about creation—and cultural export." Gaming Builds Skills. But It Needs Guardrails. PwC's Rajeev Dhuddu notes that gaming fosters cognitive skills— strategic thinking, decision-making, and collaboration. 'It's more than entertainment," he explains, 'it's a space for personal growth and digital literacy." However, these upsides depend on intentional design. Dhuddu stresses the need for in-game safeguards, digital well-being tools, and mechanisms that encourage healthy usage patterns. The goal: build systems that are as rewarding as they are responsible. While regulation is necessary, the wrong kind can do more harm than good, warns Meghna Bal. 'We cannot regulate gaming as a vice. It's a mainstream digital activity," she says. A one-size-fits-all or punitive approach, in her view, risks undermining innovation and pushing users toward unregulated platforms. Bal calls for a progressive, risk-weighted framework —combining self-regulation, tech-enabled safeguards, and public awareness. This not only protects players but also helps legitimate platforms build trust and scale. Soft Power, at Scale If India gets it right, online gaming can be a strategic soft power lever —akin to how K-pop and anime shaped global perceptions of Korea and Japan. By anchoring growth in user safety, ethical design, and cultural authenticity, India has the chance to lead the world—not just in user numbers, but in values-driven innovation. view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 21:09 IST News studio18 India's Online Gaming Boom Is a Soft Power Opportunity—But Responsible Play Must Come First Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mandala Murders, Rangeen, Fool Volume and Adults

First things first — have you cried watching Saiyaara yet? If not, watch the video episode of this column on YouTube to find out if the hype is real. Meanwhile, two new shows are battling for your weekend-binge time: Netflix's bizarre mystery Mandala Murders, and Prime Video's funny, irreverent Rangeen, about a journalist who becomes a gigolo. You already know which one you want to see first, but let's take a closer look. In two minds The body count goes up, with every episode, in both the shows… in entirely different contexts. Mandala Murders is promising on paper — ritualistic killings tied to a secret cult where science meets superstition — but this YRF show, starring Vaani Kapoor, never quite becomes the gripping puzzle-box it wants to be. There's some world-building, mythology-spanning timelines and decent performances, but storytelling only finds rhythm in the final episodes. This isn't in the league of the best in the genre — Lost, or even Dark. It's more of a 'could've been' than a 'must-watch'. A small step in the right direction for Indian genre storytelling, but not the leap it could've been. On the other hand, Rangeen, is exactly what it promises — and more. A journalist finds out his wife cheated on him with a gigolo, and instead of moping, he moonlights as one himself. This silly plot point sets the tone for a sex comedy, which it is not just about sex (the verb), but also about sex (the noun), as it dives deep into masculinity, intimacy and modern relationships. Vineet Kumar Singh leads a fine ensemble that includes Rajshri Deshpande and Sheeba Chaddha. The show never gets vulgar, instead trusts the viewer to fill in the blanks around the sex. Refreshingly devoid of male gaze, the show explores female desire and agency, gender dynamics, and the comedy of midlife crisis. Think Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, but deeper, more honest, and refreshingly real. This one's TV gold. Comic timing Vir Das's new Netflix special, Fool Volume, finds him in full command of his voice — after literally losing it just six weeks before his global tour. Cutting between shows in London, Mumbai and New York, the special is part stand-up, part love letter to the art of finding humour in bad times. Vir isn't aiming for easy laughs — he wants you to think, and then laugh. And he doesn't let the audience off easy either. It's sharp, personal, and proof that he's no longer just telling jokes — he's telling stories with punchlines. Don't miss the catchy 'Life is vertical' roast of Gen Z and the big 'drop' at the end. Decoding Gen Z Speaking of Gen Z, I'm loving the Gen Z variants and spin on comfort stories. My friend and fellow critic Raja Sen recommended Adults to me with a pitch that it's the Gen Z iteration of what Friends was for Gen X or what How I Met Your Mother was for millennials — the sitcom about a close circle of friends. What's different? No filters. No boundaries. No hard feelings. Adults mines uncomfortable and awkward situations for comedy, maintaining an 'it's so real, but we are also low-key exaggerating' vibe — often to remind you this is just a sitcom about all kinds of situationships. With just eight, 25-minute episodes, this is a quick, breezy binge of under four hours. Streaming on Jiostar. Perfect for an evening with your closest friends — and situationships. From the hottest shows to hidden gems, overlooked classics to guilty pleasures, FOMO Fix is a fortnightly compass through the chaos of content.
