SLShop: Keeping The Mercedes-Benz SL Dream Alive

Mercedes-Benz SL
Mercedes-Benz has competed in motorsports since the early 1900s before the legendary Silver Arrows dominated the Grand Prix scene from 1923 to 1939. But when WWII hit, the company ceased racing.
After the war, the brand looked to return to motorsport, and Mercedes-Benz team manager Alfred Neubauer spotted three Jaguar XK120s while attending a Le Mans race. The Jaguar's design resonated with Neubauer, and it was clear that if Mercedes were to re-enter Le Mans, this was the car to beat.
Shortly after, the Mercedes-Benz '300 Super Light', later shortened to SL, was commissioned and testing began at the Nürburgring, Germany.
Rudy Uhlenhaut, head of Mercedes passenger cars in the 1950s, constructed a lightweight (50kg) tubular shell from magnesium and aluminum. A 3.0-liter straight-six engine from an Adenauer Mercedes was soon dropped in and power was upped to 170bhp.
Mercedes-Benz SL
It scored a double victory at the 24hrs Le Mans, came second and fourth in the Mille Miglia, and bagged quadruple wins at the Nürburgring Anniversary Sports Car GP.
A suggestion by Mercedes' USA importer Max Hoffman for a road-going guise was soon approved and the 300 SL Gullwing (W198) arrived in 1954. It needs no introduction and is arguably one of the prettiest cars ever made.
Classic Mercedes-Benz SLs are rare on British and American roads now, but one company helps keep the SL dream alive: SLShop.
Sam Bailey, SLShop founder, has been around cars from a young age: 'My father was a mechanic; he did his apprenticeship with Mercedes Cruikshank in Bristol and worked on Pagoda 108s and 111s. They've always been a part of my life.'
In 2006, SLShop was born alongside Bailey's father and one other. It started with buying and selling, which involved prepping the cars for customers. This soon led to workshop expansion to maintain and service other people's cars before full restorations.
The SLShop workshop
SLShop is now claimed to be the world's largest Mercedes-Benz SL specialist with over 81 completed ground-up restorations and circa 3,000 classic SLs sold.
'We've become a one-stop shop. Likewise, we can find and fit rare parts and diagnose issues.' Bailey adds. Beyond restoration and sales, SLShop also offers storage, transportation and detailing.
The 50,000 sq ft premises in Warwickshire, U.K., house 140 cars on average with over 40 team members keeping classic Mercedes-Benz SLs alive. SLShop plans to expand its engineering department by relocating its detailing and trim shop to a nearby building and will include a rust protection section.
The Mercedes-Benz SL specialist relied on third parties for engine, gearbox, fuel pump, and differential rebuilds, but recently increased skill sets allow these to be done in-house.
Mercedes-Benz SL
'This means we can control quality, and ensure components meet manufacturer standards. For example, we are now the last company in the U.K. that can rebuild a 1960s Bosch fuel pump. There are many garage queens out there, but life is short—put miles on it. It's easy to get caught up in nostalgia because of value, missing the car's point. These machines are memory makers."
As emission laws increase, many car lovers keep an antidote classic stored in a garage while owning an EV or PHEV. 'On our full rebuilds, we often get clients requesting further customization. It's often people that want their petrol fix; those who perhaps daily drive an efficient family car.'
Mercedes-Benz SL
While SLShop offers different color combinations via sustainable materials, it can also shoehorn larger more powerful modern Mercedes engines into classic SLs, meaning little is off limits.
'We did have a request to widen the track of an SL, but this involved cutting the car down the middle and adding 6 inches. They didn't want to flare the arches and change the line of the car. But that proved a step too far.'
SLShop's reborn program revives tired W121, W113, and R107 Mercedes-Benz SLs to former glory. Each car includes a history file, a certificate of authenticity and collectability, a 24-month warranty and concierge servicing.
They also have a wide variety of stunning Mercedes-Benz SLs for sale.

FIA Delivers Verdict on Max Verstappen

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The FIA has issued its ruling on an incident involving Lewis Hamilton (Car 44) and Max Verstappen (Car 1) during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Verstappen was under investigation for forcing Hamilton off the racetrack in a battle for P11. Mid-race, Verstappen was chasing the seven-time world champion when he got too close for comfort at Turn 4. Hamilton veered off the track and rejoined the race behind Verstappen. A single POV in the broadcast made it appear like Hamilton was pushed off the track to avoid a collision. Notably, Verstappen had not passed Hamilton when he went off the racetrack. However, after analyzing the incident with the help of multiple camera angles, the FIA issued its verdict, stating no further action was required. It stated: "The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 1 (Max Verstappen), team representatives and video and in-car video evidence. The driver of Car 44 (Lewis Hamilton) waived his right to attend the hearing. Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain driving the (44) Scuderia Ferrari SF-25 leads Max Verstappen of the Netherlands driving the (1) Oracle Red Bull Racing RB21 on track during the F1 Grand Prix of Hungary at... Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain driving the (44) Scuderia Ferrari SF-25 leads Max Verstappen of the Netherlands driving the (1) Oracle Red Bull Racing RB21 on track during the F1 Grand Prix of Hungary at Hungaroring on August 03, 2025 in Budapest, Hungary. More"The driver of Car 1 stated during the hearing that he had gained some momentum on Car 44 out of Turn 3 with fresher tyres and used this momentum to make a move on the inside into Turn 4. He further elaborated that he was in full control of his car and could have stayed further to the inside to leave space for Car 44 on the exit. However he said, as Car 44 had gone off track, he elected to use all of the track on the exit. "The team representative of Car 44 confirmed that there was no contact between both cars and further stated that the driver of Car 44 chose not to attempt to remain on track. "Taking all this into account, the Stewards determine that there was no contact and that the incident does not qualify as forcing another car off track despite the ambitious nature of the overtaking attempt and take no further action." Hamilton started the race in P12 and finished in the same position. Verstappen, on the other hand, started the Grand Prix in eighth, but finished P9. 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix Results 1. Despondent Hamilton and Ferrari crash back to earth

Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari crashed back to earth on Sunday when 24 hours after Charles Leclerc claimed the team's first pole of 2025 they left Hungary frustrated and dejected. Seven-time world champion Hamilton, who on Saturday said he was "completely useless" to the team and ready to be replaced, wound up 12th while Leclerc dropped from race leader to a grumbling fourth. Hamilton, backed beforehand by team boss Fred Vasseur, was in a bleak mood suggesting that he remained trapped by a crisis of confidence that has turned his spectacular marquee signing for Ferrari into a nightmare. "When you have a feeling, you have a feeling," he said enigmatically, responding to a question about his comment suggesting that he was no longer good enough for Ferrari and should be replaced. He added: "There's a lot going on in the background that isn't great." Asked if he still loved racing, he replied to say he did, but with little conviction. Leclerc appeared to be little happier after he had failed to convert pole into victory for the 15th time in 16 attempts during the last three years. His one success came in last year's Monaco Grand Prix, his home event. "We lost a podium, so I am very disappointed," said Leclerc, having warned the team during the race that they had bungled his car's set-up in some unspecified way. "But I spoke too quickly because being out of the car, I had a bit more detail about what went on," he added later. "I thought it was about something else that we had discussed, but unfortunately it was on the chassis. "There was an issue on that side and we will look into it for it not to happen again. It doesn't really make me feel any better because when you're fighting for a win, and then you have these kind of issues, it never happens. "We need to look into it to make sure it never happens again because the car was just undriveable. "It was around lap 40 because as soon as I started to struggle and to complain, it was basically when we started to have the issue and it got worse and worse. "It's very frustrating to have everything under control, to know that the pace is in the car to win, and then you end up being nowhere. We lost a podium.' Hamilton, 40, winner of a record eight Hungarian Grands Prix and a record nine poles at the circuit, finished where he started and with his worst result at the circuit, inevitably sparking talk of his possible retirement. But as he headed off towards a summer break, he could look at the joy in the Aston Martin garage where, despite a back muscle injury, his one-time McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso had finished a season's best fifth, aged 44. str/nr

McLaren F1 CEO on Historic 200th Win in Hungary - 'Close to Perfect'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has described the Hungarian Grand Prix as a race that "was as close to perfect as you can get," after Lando Norris secured his fifth victory of the season, followed by Oscar Piastri in P2. The race win marked McLaren's 200th Grand Prix victory. Brown lauded the team for its flawless pit stops, commendable race strategy, and some hard yet clean racing between the two McLaren drivers in the final laps of the race at the Hungaroring. Charles Leclerc started the race on pole position and maintained a strong lead. However, Norris's one-stop strategy took away Leclerc's lead when he pitted the second time. Soon after, the Ferrari driver's pace dropped significantly due to a problem with his SF-25's chassis. Despite starting from P3 and cruising with hard tires older than 30 laps, Norris maintained consistent lap times. However, Piastri's new set of hard compounds in the last leg of the race helped him cover the eight-odd-second gap to Norris. McLaren had given both its drivers the green signal to contend for the race win, but the instructions were clear that the fight had to be clean. McLaren CEO Zak Brown looks on in parc ferme with delight during the F1 Grand Prix of Belgium at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on July 27, 2025 in Spa, Belgium. McLaren CEO Zak Brown looks on in parc ferme with delight during the F1 Grand Prix of Belgium at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on July 27, 2025 in Spa, pushed as hard as he could in the last five laps, maintaining a gap of around half a second to Norris, who left no room for Piastri to pass. Eventually, Norris crossed the finish line first and closed the gap to his championship leader teammate to just 9 points. Speaking on the race that will stay on the minds of many, especially with the onset of the summer break, Brown stated that there could be no other way to end the first half of the 2025 season. He told Sky Sports F1: "Everyone will sleep well tonight - great way to go into the summer break. You're never perfect in a race but I think that was as close to perfect as you can get. "The drivers were awesome, pit stops amazing, strategy was great to get Lando up there, Oscar drove brilliantly. I couldn't be prouder of this racing team. "All under control. I had some good chats with Andrea [Stella] during the race, it was very exciting. It was a great Grand Prix. "With Lando's first lap, we weren't planning a one-stop strategy, we didn't know if we could but then it got to a point where let's try. Knew it would come down to the last five laps there and good to see them race very hard, very clean and they're both happy boys." Brown also addressed the difference in race strategies, pointing to Piastri's preference to race his teammate. He added: "We were talking to Oscar on the radio on if he wanted to race Lando or Charles. He wanted to race Lando which was understandable. "You just had two different strategies that converged and it couldn't have been closer. Oscar was faster at the end and just couldn't get by. "Unlike Silverstone when Oscar was obviously disappointed he didn't win, I think here he understands everyone gave it their best shot."
