Real Madrid Officially Announces First Team Star Farewell

Forbes16-07-2025
Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid used its official website and social media to announce the farewell ... More of a first team star and modern day club legend.
Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid used its official website and social media to announce the farewell of a first team star and modern day club legend.
'Real Madrid C. F. announces that tomorrow, Thursday 17 July, at 13:00, an institutional act of tribute and farewell to our player Lucas Vazquez will take place at Real Madrid City, with the presence of our president Florentino Perez,' the club started, in a statement.
Madrid said it 'would like to express its gratitude and affection to Lucas Vazquez', who it called 'one of the great legends of our club'.
Los Blancos recalled how Vazquez arrived at the club in 2007 aged 16 and played in the remaining youth categories in local football before turning professional.
After a loan spell at Espanyol, he then made his Madrid debut in 2015 and became a threepeat Champions League winner from the following year until 2018 under Zinedine Zidane.
'Since then, he has defended our shirt in 402 games over 10 seasons, in one of the most successful stages in Real Madrid's history. In all this time he has won 23 titles: five European Cups, five Club World Cups, four European Super Cups, four La Ligas, one Copa del Rey and four Spanish Super Cups,' Madrid said.
Perez remarked that Vazquez 'represents the values of Real Madrid in an exemplary way, which has made him one of the most loved players by our fans'.
'The figure of Lucas Vázquez symbolizes the work, perseverance, humility and a winning spirit essential to succeed with this shirt. He is a player who takes the affection and recognition of all Real Madrid. Real Madrid is and always will be his home,' Perez promised.
Madrid wished Vazque 'and his entire family the best of luck in this new stage of his life', which is thus far unknown.
This summer, he is one of two big name departures from one of the most successful eras of the club alongside Luka Modric, who has already been named as a new AC Milan midfielder.
Minutes were going to be hard for Vazquez to earn at Real Madrid
With Trent Alexander-Arnold signed from Liverpool as part of a pretty much free transfer, minutes were always going to be hard for Vazquez to earn at Real Madrid moving forward.

Aldershot's head of recruitment given ban for betting

Aldershot Town's head of recruitment Jamie Hedges has been charged after breaking the FA's gambling rules. As a result he has been given a two-month ban from football with immediate effect and handed an £850 fine. Aldershot detailed the 25-year-old had placed 2,523 bets placed on football matches between 2 January 2020 and 5 May 2025. In response to the charge, the Shots said they "will be giving Jamie all the support he needs". Hedges joined the club in 2023 having previously worked under first-team manager Tommy Widdrington at Bristol Rovers.

Max Verstappen confirms he is staying at Red Bull next year

Max Verstappen ended weeks of speculation about his future on Thursday when the reigning Formula One world champion said he would be staying with Red Bull in 2026. Verstappen said it was time to "stop all the rumours". "I've never really said anything about it because I was just focused on talking to the team about how we can improve our performance," the Dutchman explained at the Hungaroring circuit ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. "And that's why I had nothing really to add, but I think it's time to basically stop all the rumours. "For me, it's always been quite clear that I was staying anyway." Four-time world champion Verstappen's future became a subject of speculation after rival driver George Russell revealed his Mercedes team were talking to the Dutchman's management about his future plans. It emerged that there was a performance clause in Verstappen's contract that offered him a chance to leave Red Bull if he was not in the top three at the end of July. But that clause has now elapsed and he will stay with Red Bull next year, the first season following a sweeping change of technical regulations. Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028 and a similar scrutiny of his contract is expected next year once it becomes clear which teams have adapted and progressed best under the new regulations. Verstappen has fallen 81 points behind series leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren into third place in the drivers' championship this year. Red Bull are in a state of flux, after sacking their team principal Christian Horner this month and replacing the Briton with Laurent Mekies, the boss of their 'B' team Racing Bulls. str/nr/gj

Paris Saint-Germain fined for fans' misconduct and 'UEFA mafia' flag at Champions League final

NYON, Switzerland (AP) — Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain was fined almost 150,000 euros ($171,000) on Thursday for misconduct by fans at the final including taking pieces of turf and displaying a 'UEFA Mafia' banner. UEFA said its disciplinary panel judged six charges including 'transmitting message that is not fit for a sports event' and 'bringing UEFA into disrepute.' PSG won its first Champions League title with a 5-0 rout of Inter Milan on May 31 at Bayern Munich's stadium. UEFA announced the disciplinary sanctions with a fine of 10,000 euros ($11,500) for the offensive message. PSG fans showed a flag with the 'UEFA Mafia' slogan and a picture of a pig, even though its club's president Nasser al-Khelaifi is a member of the UEFA executive committee. Al-Khelaifi was elected to UEFA's decision-making body representing the European Club Association which he also leads. UEFA routinely prosecutes cases of fans using the 'mafia' slur, though Norwegian club Brann won an appeal ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport this year. Brann argued its fans' song had been satirical at a Women's Champions League game last year and a UEFA fine was overturned. The biggest financial penalty for PSG was 100,000 euros ($115,000) for the combined offenses of fans invading the field of play and lighting fireworks. After the game, fans went on the field and ripped up pieces of turf to take away. UEFA fined PSG an additional 8,000 euros ($9,160) for the charge of 'acts of damage.' A ban on PSG selling tickets to its fans for one away game in a UEFA competition was deferred for two years on probation. PSG earned about 140 million euros ($160 million) in Champions League prize money from UEFA last season. ___ AP soccer:
