RM100 SARA aid via MyKad ensures transparency, benefits all Malaysians

The Sun6 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The one-off RM100 cash assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme will be disbursed directly through MyKad, ensuring transparency and targeted aid for all Malaysian adults.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching emphasised that this approach guarantees the assistance reaches the intended recipients while preventing misuse on non-essential items.
Teo stated, 'I believe SARA has clear benefits as it can be used specifically for purchasing basic necessities, and not for buying cigarettes, alcohol, or other non-essential items.'
'So with the aid channelled through MyKad, this initiative can truly benefit all Malaysians aged 18 and above,' she added.
The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, involves an allocation of RM2 billion and is expected to benefit over 22 million Malaysians.
Additionally, Teo welcomed the increased allocation for the Rahmah MADANI Sales programme, which has doubled from RM300 million to RM600 million this year.
She highlighted its affordability, citing examples such as instant noodles sold at RM3.70 compared to higher supermarket prices.
Teo also praised the government's decision to set RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre through a targeted subsidy mechanism, ensuring only Malaysians benefit.
Earlier today, Anwar announced several key initiatives, including the RM100 SARA aid, toll hike postponements, and the new subsidised fuel price. – Bernama

Channel excess Sara funds to education and health sectors now, says Dr Wee

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has reiterated his call for the government to channel extra funds from Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) to the education and health sectors. The MCA president noted that there are those who will need funds for surgery or to enter a public university. "Those waiting 21 months for surgery still have to wait another five months just to reach the end of this year? "Students waiting for scholarships to enter public university (offer via open channels not UPU) or matriculation have to wait until next year to apply again?" "Why keep the patients and students waiting?" he asked in a Facebook post on Wednesday (July 23). He was referring to the RM100 Sara cash aid that was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for Malaysians aged 18 and above earlier on Wednesday. Dr Wee had earlier said those who do not need the RM100 should be able to opt out. He proposed redirecting the money to critical sectors like supporting public hospitals and awarding scholarships to deserving students, instead of using it for what he described as populist measures. "Rather than spending public money on populist measures that may benefit those who don't really need it, wouldn't it be better to support those who genuinely do, while also upgrading our healthcare and education systems?" he said. Dr Wee had also questioned how the government would utilise unclaimed money returned at the end of the year.

Corporate Malaysia's Q2 earnings likely to be damp squib

Maybank Investment Bank forecasts a modest 2.5% earnings growth for the FBM KLCI in 2025. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Investors hoping for better second-quarter (Q2) earnings from listed companies will likely be left high and dry as Corporate Malaysia is expected to continue the underperformance of Q1 2025. Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) said the upcoming Q2 results season may be muted, reflecting challenges from external uncertainties, particularly the ongoing US-Malaysia tariff negotiations. 'The Q2 results season may yet be another unexciting one but at least one with fewer earnings downgrades,' it said in a strategy note. The research house forecasts a modest 2.5% earnings growth for the FBM KLCI this year, primarily weighed down by the banking sector. However, it anticipates a stronger rebound in 2026 with a projected growth of 7.7%. It has a base case target of 1,660 points for the FBM KLCI, pegged to 14.4 times 2026 estimated price-to-earnings ratio (PER). 'Our base case assumes further de-escalation in trade tensions and favourable outcome from tariff negotiations,' it added. Some bright spots Despite the softer external environment, Maybank IB said there are 'bright spots' to be found. It noted Malaysia's domestic economic fundamentals appear encouraging, pointing to robust consumer activity, a sustained investment cycle, and signs of resilient private demand as cushioning the impact of weaker exports. The economy grew at 4.5% in Q2, slightly faster than the 4.4% year-on-year growth in Q1 as resilient consumer demand offset weaker exports. This suggests a steady growth momentum and indicates external headwinds due to US tariffs are being mitigated by domestic tailwinds, it noted. Maybank IB said investors should watch out for weakness in the technology sector. Banks are 'unlikely to yield much surprise' even as it watches for lower loan growth. However, it expects some positive momentum for construction, healthcare, property, and more selectively, the oil and gas, and utilities sectors. It said most plantation companies would be weaker quarter-on-quarter due to lower crude palm oil prices, though some could book gains from disposal and forex exchange movements. Consumer and real estate investment trusts are expected to be softer, after a seasonally strong first quarter.

Jepak Bridge Now Known As Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Bridge

GENERAL BINTULU, July 23 (Bernama) -- The Jepak Bridge, which was opened to the public in March, is now officially named the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Bridge. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the name during the official opening ceremony of the RM466.7 million bridge tonight. He said the state government's decision to name the bridge after Sarawak's fourth chief minister was to honour his contributions to the development of Bintulu. 'If he (Abdul Taib) were still alive, he would surely be impressed by the bridge we are inaugurating tonight,' he said. According to Abang Johari, Abdul Taib had made major contributions by establishing the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA), a state agency responsible for planning and overseeing development under the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) initiative, which subsequently succeeded in attracting investments to the Samalaju Industrial Park area. The late Abdul Taib, who also served as Sarawak's Head of State, passed away on Feb 21 last year. The iconic bridge was among the development promises made by Abang Johari in 2017 during a dialogue session with the people of Bintulu, shortly after taking over the state leadership. 'I promised to build an iconic bridge like the one (Golden Gate Bridge) in San Francisco. Today, I have fulfilled that promise. This bridge is not only a physical connector, but also a symbol of unity and progress for the people,' he said. Abang Johari also shared a personal memory involving his late wife, Puan Sri Juma'ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, who passed away last month. She was born in Bintulu but did not live to see the completion of the bridge.
