
Leonardo CEO sees advantages in new entrants to GCAP fighter programme
Speaking at the Paris Airshow, Roberto Cingolani said more partners could help boost the technology of the Global Combat Air Programme.
He also said that Saudi Arabia joining the programme - which has long been mooted - would open up a big market with great potential.
Cingolani said he saw room for many partners in future, while reiterating that this would be a political decision.
He added that the project's 2035 deadline was "serious and strict" and "we must make all efforts to meet it".
"We are on schedule but it is a complex development," he added.
Two sources close to the matter told Reuters last month that Japan had growing doubts that the project would meet the 2035 target, potentially forcing Tokyo to plug air defence gaps with new U.S. F-35 stealth planes or upgrades to aging jets.
GCAP is an effort by Japan and its two European partners to build a next-generation fighter free from the operational restrictions that often come with purchases of U.S.-made military equipment. For example, buyers are often not allowed to do upgrades and maintenance without U.S. permission.
The project is being led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (7011.T), opens new tab in Japan, BAE Systems (BAES.L), opens new tab in Britain and Leonardo in Italy.
France, Germany and Spain are working on a rival project, although one of its partners - Airbus (AIR.PA), opens new tab - said in January it could see the two programmes combining, or at least designed to work together.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has called on the EU to 'defend European interests resolutely' after Donald Trump threatened to impose 30% tariffs on nearly all imports from the EU. He said the EU should be ready for a trade war and to stand up to the US president who was only last week expected to approve a 10% tariff agreement in principle with the bloc. 'It is more than ever up to the commission to assert the union's determination to defend European interests resolutely,' Macron said on social media. 'In particular, this implies accelerating the preparation of credible countermeasures, by mobilising all the instruments at its disposal, including anti-coercion, if no agreement is reached by 1 August.' Other European leaders called for calm, including in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Ireland. But reflecting the shock around the bloc over Trump's threat, the influential Federation of German Industries (BDI) said Trump's announcement was 'a wake-up call for the industry on both sides of the Atlantic'. Macron's call for trade war readiness came in contrast to Berlin, which urged a 'pragmatic' response. 'The EU now must, in the time that remains, negotiate in a pragmatic manner a solution with the United States,' Germany's economy minister, Katherina Reiche, said in a statement. 'A pragmatic outcome to these negotiations must be reached quickly.' Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, who enjoys good relations with Trump, said in a statement she trusted 'a fair agreement' could be reached. 'It would make no sense to trigger a trade war between the two sides of the Atlantic,' she said. The Dutch prime minister, Dick Schoof, said on social media the EU 'must remain united and resolute' in its aim to reach a 'mutually beneficial' deal with the US. Ireland's deputy prime minister, Simon Harris, said: there was 'no necessity to escalate the situation'. Trump has previously accused Dublin of stealing US business by luring in tech and pharma companies. Ambassadors are to meet in Brussels on Sunday to discuss tactics before a scheduled summit of trade ministers on Monday, where divisions in approach may be underlined. The threat of a 30% tariff is being seen as a negotiating tactic, but behind the scenes there is fury with many viewing it as a dangerous transatlantic game at a time of grave global instability. Trump's latest salvo is in line with his April 'liberation day' claim that the EU was charging unfair duties of 39% on US imports, an analysis widely discredited, with EU officials pointing to an average of about 2.5%. Some MEPs have warned that if they start accepting 'illegal' tariffs as the new norm, Trump will just come back for more. 'It is matter of showing the EU is not a victim, is not paralysed in itself or scared,' the Italian MEP Brando Benifei, a member of the international trade committee, said last week. Germany's Association of the Automotive Industry warned about the prospect of rising costs for carmakers and suppliers and said it was 'regrettable that there is a threat of a further escalation of the trade conflict'. Germany's car industry is already reeling from the 25% hike in tariffs on exports to the US on top of the pre-existing 2.5%, while its steel industry is having to cope with punitive tariffs of 50%. It is understood the agreement in principle that was on Trump's table offered potential tariff relief for any European car manufacturers with plants in the US, which included Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen along with the Swedish brand Volvo. Last week the Swedish finance minister called the agreement 'really bad' while at the same time saying that some economic pain was inevitable. EU-US trade is worth €1.4tn a year but just three countries – Germany, Italy and Ireland, with its large multinational pharma sector – export more to the US than they import. Emanuele Orsini, the president of Confindustria, the confederation of Italian industry, said the EU must not escalate. 'Now we all need to keep calm and hold our nerve,' he said. But in the north of the country, the Confindustria Veneto president, Raffaele Boscaini, said there would have to be supports for industries in the event of higher tariffs. 'The EU and the Italian government will have to intervene with concrete measures to support the competitiveness of our companies: investment and access to credit, bureaucratic and fiscal relief as well as the definition of energy policy,' said Boscaini, who is head of marketing at Masi, the leading producer of Amarone wine, which would be hit hard by a 30% tariff.

French wine and cheese makers say U.S. tariffs would hit hard

A 30% duty would be "disastrous" for France's food industry, said Jean-François Loiseau, president of food lobby group ANIA, while Francois Xavier Huard, CEO of dairy association FNIL, said: "It's a real shock for milk and cheese producers - this is an important market for us". "It's a new environment we will have to get used to - I don't think this is temporary," Huard told Reuters on Sunday, referring to shifting rules and flaring trade tensions. He noted the industry may have to rethink its strategy relating to the markets in which it operates. France's dairy sector exports nearly half of its production, including to the United States, which imports mostly cheeses such as Brie but also fresh products like yogurt and butter. It risks losing annual sales worth hundreds of millions of euros, said Huard, noting the sector sells 350 million euros ($409 million) worth of dairy products to the U.S. annually. French food exporters are worried that additional import taxes could push up prices of their products beyond the reach of inflation-strapped shoppers in the United States. "Products like wine, especially, are consumed for pleasure -if you have less money to spend, you might forgo the purchase," said Yannick Fialip, head of association CNPA, which promotes French food exports. "We will be less competitive," Fialip added, noting a weaker dollar had already added pressure on exports to the U.S. The European Union said on Sunday it prefers a negotiated solution on trade with the United States, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen saying the bloc would extend its suspension of countermeasures to U.S. tariffs until early August. Ferrari Chair John Elkann settles inheritance tax dispute in Italy
MILAN, July 13 (Reuters) - Stellantis ( opens new tab and Ferrari ( opens new tab Chairman John Elkann and his siblings Lapo and Ginevra have settled a tax dispute in Italy over the inheritance of their grandmother Marella Caracciolo, a spokesperson for the three brothers said on Sunday. The case, opened last year, alleged that the three did not pay taxes in the country on assets they inherited after the death in 2019 of Marella Caracciolo, the wife of late Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli. The spokesperson said John, Lapo and Ginevra, "with the aim of rapidly and definitively closing a painful personal and family vicissitude", had reached a "comprehensive settlement" with the Italian tax agency. "This settlement was concluded without any admission, not even tacit or partial, of the grounds of the objections initially alleged," the spokesman said, adding discussions were also under way with prosecutors in the city of Turin, Northern Italy, who launched the investigation, although their outcome was not yet defined. Italian daily Il Fatto Quotidiano, which initially reported the news on Sunday, said the Elkanns would pay at least 175 million euros ($205 million) to settle the tax dispute. Italy's Revenue Agency did not respond to a request for comment sent by Reuters. The case stems from a wider inheritance dispute between the Elkanns and their mother Margherita over the estate of Gianni Agnelli, which has divided one of Italy's best known business dynasties. As part of this case, a judge in Turin last year seized money and assets worth almost 75 million euros from five people, including John, Lapo and Ginevra Elkann. ($1 = 0.8555 euros)
