Cops in Barak Valley step up war on drugs

Silchar: Law enforcement agencies in Assam's Barak Valley are ramping up efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking, a growing concern in the region known as a key corridor in the narcotics trade, reports BB Goswami.
Cachar additional SP (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal, speaking at an awareness programme at Silchar Press Club on Thursday, said police are actively working to neutralise trafficking networks. "We are committed to intensifying surveillance, strengthening border controls, and fostering community vigilance," Pal said.
The programme, organised by the PIB, Assam, under the Union ministry of information and broadcasting, marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

"Drug mafias are roaming freely": BJP's Tarun Chugh slams AAP over drug problem in Punjab
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, alleging that drug mafias are operating freely in the state while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is preoccupied with the hospitality of party convenor Arvind Kejriwal. While speaking to ANI, Tarun Chugh said, 'AAP's governance is primarily for headlines, not for public interest. Drug mafias are roaming freely, and the CM, Bhagwant Mann, is only engaged in the hospitality of Arvind Kejriwal.' He further alleged that the governance failure in Punjab over the last several years has allowed crime and drug-related activities to flourish. 'AAP and Congress have been in power in Punjab for the last 8.5 years... The state has been thrown into the fire of crime and anarchy,' he added. Reiterating the BJP's position on the issue, Chugh added, 'BJP stands strong against drug dealers. No dealer should be spared.' His remarks come amid the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was sent to seven days of police custody by a Mohali court on Thursday in connection with a money laundering case linked to drugs. He is scheduled to be produced before the court again on July 2. Meanwhile, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, asserted that the Punjab government is tackling the drug menace at its root. In a post on X, on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Kejriwal wrote, 'Today is the International Day Against Drug Abuse. In Punjab, the AAP government is not just talking - we are taking strong action to make the state drug-free. We're fighting the problem at its root to protect our youth and their future. Let's salute every honest officer, volunteer, and citizen who stands with us in this real battle.' Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also emphasised that their war against drugs has now transformed into a mass movement. 'The campaign we launched from Punjab to eradicate drugs, 'War Against Drugs', has now transformed into a mass movement. Those who ruin families and use the ill-got gains of this sin to build palaces and host lavish parties will not be spared,' CM Mann said while speaking to the media. 'We have improved law and order in Punjab and provided people with a safe environment. By taking the strictest action against drug traffickers, we have forced them to flee Punjab,' he said. (ANI)

Coast Guard apprehends 3 Sri Lankans for illegal entry
Jun 28, 2025 03:31 PM IST The Indian Coast Guard on Saturday apprehended three Sri Lankan nationals for allegedly trying to enter into the country illegally, a PIB (Defence) release here said. The three men were brought to Mandapam and handed over to the Tamil Nadu Marine Police.(AFP) The Coast Guard Hovercraft ACV H197 sighted a group of three persons at the "4th Island at about 0800 hrs today while being on routine surveillance." "The ACV swiftly moved and apprehended them. The interrogation established that all three personnel are Sri Lankan nationals attempting illegal migration from Mannar," it said. The three men were brought to Mandapam and handed over to the Tamil Nadu Marine Police for further investigation, it added.

Rally in Belagavi against drug abuse
The police organised a rally to create awareness against drug abuse to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Belagavi on Thursday. A large number of students, NGO members and officers participated in the rally that began at the Rani Channamma Circle and ended at KLE Centenary Hall. They carried placards and raised slogans against drug abuse during their rally. Police Commissioner Borasae Bhushan Gulabrao, who flagged off the rally, said that the city police are adopting a zero tolerance policy against drug abuse. He said that special teams have been formed to trace and arrest those related to drug peddling. He said that he and his officers will soon visit schools and colleges to organise awareness creation programmes. The rally was organised in association with Jain International Trade Organisation and Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) Belagavi unit. Deputy Drug Controller M. Nagaraj, Assistant Drug Controllers K. Mallikarjun, Raghuram Nidavanda and M. Manohar and Drug Inspector Renu Prasad and M. Dayanand from the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA), JITO office-bearers Harshavardhan Inchal and Abhay Adimani, event convenor Devagouda Imagoudanavar and others were present. Members of Belgaum District Retailer and Wholesale Pharma Association, KAHER, Rani Chennamma College of Pharmacy, Maratha Mandal College of Pharmacy, Sagar College of Pharmacy and many more organizations joined the event.
