Preacher quizzed over Bunian claim, report to be sent to mufti

ALOR STAR: Kedah religious authorities have questioned a controversial preacher who claimed that a well-known religious figure had performed Friday prayers with supernatural beings, known in Malay folklore as bunian.
Datuk Abd Ghani Zainudin, director of the Kedah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIK), said the department will submit its investigation report to the Kedah Mufti Department for further action.
Abd Ghani said that the preacher had made the statement during an event held on Nov 11, 2023.
The preacher was hauled up for questioning on Sunday at the department's office, he said.
Abd Ghani said: "His statement was recorded and the investigation report has been completed."
The saga began after a 1-minute-31-second video went viral, showing the preacher claiming that the late Tuan Guru Sheikh Abdul Hamid Ismail had performed Friday prayers in the company of bunian
This is not the first time the preacher has courted controversy.
Last year, he was reminded by JHEAIK to refrain from behaviour that could mislead the public, following the circulation of a video showing students excessively praising him at an event where Arabic verses were recited in his admiration.
Meanwhile, Kedah Umno information chief Datuk Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin urged the religious authorities to act decisively, describing the preacher's remarks as deeply troubling.
"This is the second time the same individual has been embroiled in a controversy touching on Islamic creed (akidah) and religious sensibility. Such incidents tarnish the sanctity of Islam and create unrest within the community," he said in a statement today.
Shaiful also urged JHEAIK to strengthen its checks and monitoring of all accredited religious speakers in the state.

Govt combats extremism among foreign workers with JAKIM collaboration

KOTA BHARU: Religious authorities, including the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), are intensifying efforts to prevent extremist ideologies from spreading among foreign workers. Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), emphasised the importance of moderation and rejected any form of radical teachings. Mohd Na'im stated that while not all foreign workers are influenced by extremist ideologies, proactive measures remain crucial. He highlighted the role of JAKIM and Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM) in addressing the issue through inter-agency cooperation. The minister reiterated the government's stance against extremism, affirming that such ideologies contradict true Islamic teachings. He said, 'We strongly oppose any ideology that promotes extremist actions, as such acts have no place in Islam.' Recent police investigations revealed that the Radical Militant Movement of Bangladesh (GMRB) had been recruiting members and raising funds for the Islamic State (IS). Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail noted that the group collected RM500 annually from each member, with additional voluntary contributions. On June 27, authorities arrested 36 Bangladesh nationals linked to militant activities. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that operations targeting the network began in April across Selangor and Johor. - Bernama

MACC tracking down money allegedly laundered by 'Datuk' in RM75mil probe

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is tracing laundered money as part of its probe into a company director with the title of Datuk. Sources quoted by Malay language daily Sinar Harian said that investigations showed that the suspect had created dummy companies to invest in and had sought out victims, including VIPs. The companies were found to have been created in 2018 using swindled money from bank loans. "The suspect didn't only create these companies offering non-existing investments but also others that offered unlicensed money lending," sources said. It added that the suspect had also bribed a bank CEO with a payment of RM8mil to approve a RM400mil loan. The MACC was also in the midst of tracing down the money that had been "layered" by proxies, including the aforementioned bribe. "More witnesses and several individuals will be called in to assist investigations," the source said. On Thursday (July 3), the suspect was remanded as part of a probe into money laundering activities amounting to around RM75mill. The director was arrested on Wednesday (July 2) after he presented himself to the MACC for a statement at the MACC headquarters. He was then remanded for four days until July 6. The arrest was a part of follow up actions under Ops Fibre. On June 30, the MACC had raided four locations in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur that belonged to the suspect. Previously, MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that investigations were being conducted under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001.

QuickCheck: Is a video of a cable car connecting Perak and Kedah real?

CABLE cars offer a picturesque way to travel through mountainous regions and are always popular with tourists. Recently, a video went viral on social media with claims that there was a new cable car service linking Pengkalan Hulu in Perak to Baling in Kedah. Is this video true? VERDICT: FALSE Baling District Officer Yazlan Sunardie Che Yahaya confirmed to Malay language daily Sinar Harian that the video was fake and generated by artificial intelligence (AI). He also urged the public not to be confused by the viral video. "It certainly does not exist, but I must admit, it was quite exciting to see," he told Sinar Harian. "We can be entertained by AI content, and who knows, one day it could become a reality. "After all, Baling and Pengkalan Hulu boast picturesque mountains and scenery," he added. Sinar Harian also reported that the viral video had previously surfaced on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, leading a couple to travel from Kuala Lumpur under the impression that it was real. Yazlan Sunardie emphasised that the incident was a reminder of how AI-generated content could be misinterpreted. "If such a service were ever to exist, I would be the first to try it," he told Sinar Harian with a laugh. Meanwhile, acting Baling OCPD Deputy Supt Ahmad Salini Md Ali urged the public to verify the authenticity of any viral content, particularly on social media. "To date, we have not received any reports of losses, fraud, or concerns regarding this AI-generated content. "Our checks in both Baling and Pengkalan Hulu confirm that no such cable car project exists," he added. DSP Ahmad Salini also said that if such AI-generated content causes panic, or disrupts public order, action could be taken under existing laws. A check by Sinar Harian showed that the video is no longer available and appears to have been removed from all social media platforms.
