Chorao, Chandor, Bandora among five villages to be developed as tourism villages at Rs 2.5cr

Panaji:
Under the Centre's Tourism Village Development Scheme 2021, the tourism department has identified five villages in the state to develop as tourism villages. Under this scheme, the tourism department, in consultation with the respective panchayats, will build tourism amenities to harness the tourism potential of the villages at an approximate cost of Rs 2.5 crore.
The tourism department intends to build a multi-purpose hall in each of the five villages where local fairs, festivals, live performances, and other events will be held. The five villages are Cotigao, Bandora, Chandor, Chorao, and Sal. In 2023, Cotigao was awarded the best tourism village of India, while in 2024, Bandora received the same award in the wellness category.
Initially, in 2023, the villages of Goltim-Navelim on Divar Island, Chorao, Cotigao, Bandora, and Vere-Vaghurme were being considered to be developed as tourist villages.
'The idea of tourist villages fits in with the move to expand tourism away from the coastline, which is already crowded. We want to promote heritage, rural areas, and the hinterland through these villages,' said a GTDC official.
To take the initiative forward, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has moved to appoint a consultant who will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the five villages. The appointed consultant will be responsible for the project from the conceptual stage to completion, including securing statutory approvals and govt grants.

Each village will receive Rs 50 lakh under the scheme, with additional funding considered on a case-by-case basis.
Tourism department officials said that whatever infrastructure comes up in the villages will comply with all local building bylaws and zoning regulations. The department plans to construct stalls to promote local handicrafts, tourist information counters, gazebos, and seating arrangements.
A GTDC official said the panchayats will be consulted before the conceptual plans are finalised. 'The goal is to showcase rural Goa, traditional art forms, pre-Portuguese heritage, and culture,' the official said.

Bhopal loses Haj embarkation point tag, pilgrims to fly from Indore

Bhopal: The state capital faces a significant change in Haj pilgrimage arrangements, losing its status as an embarkation point. Direct flights to Saudi Arabia from Bhopal will not operate next year. Indore stands as the only departure point among 17 designated cities across India. The direct Haj flight service from Bhopal to Saudi Arabia began in 2010. Pilgrims must now travel to Indore to access direct flights to Mecca-Medina, as it remains the sole departure point in the state. Approximately 8,500 people from the state undertook the Haj pilgrimage last year. The revised arrangement particularly affects pilgrims from central and eastern Madhya Pradesh. Residents from Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, and Hoshangabad districts, who previously benefited from Bhopal's accessibility, now face additional travel requirements. According to the State Haj Committee, nearly 2,000 pilgrims from Bhopal and neighbouring areas must now travel 200 kilometres to reach Indore. The total number of pilgrims from MP was 8,500. This change increases both expenses and travel duration for pilgrims. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? "We have written to the higher authorities to continue Bhopal as the embarkation point," said the Chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Haj Welfare Committee. While Indore's designation ensures one departure point remains in Madhya Pradesh, its location presents travel difficulties for numerous state residents. Officials confirm that Indore airport's facilities have been upgraded to manage increased pilgrim numbers. The airport has implemented additional support services to handle the higher volume of departing pilgrims. The Haj Committee plans to set up a helpdesk in Bhopal to support pilgrims, offering guidance about transport options and accommodation facilities in Indore. Govt mulls life tax exemption for tourism caravan vehicles in AP

Vijayawada: The state govt is likely to give life tax exemption for tourism caravan vehicles to encourage their registration exclusively in Andhra Pradesh under the new 'caravan tourism policy' which is expected to be unveiled soon. Apparently, the life tax exemption would be provided to the first 10 or 20 caravans. According to the tourism department officials, the base variant of a caravan vehicle is pegged at around Rs 1 crore, while the cost of high-end models run into multiple crores depending on their specifications and bespoke customisations opted by the operators. "As per the existing life tax rates, i.e., five percent in AP, a caravan owner needs to pay Rs 5 lakh as life tax while registering the vehicle with the transport department. Accordingly, the tourism department believes the caravan operators can save an average of Rs 10 lakh on life tax, following their exemption, collected during the vehicle registration with the transport department," a senior tourism department official said. The official said that the decision aims to encourage more number of operators to register new caravan vehicles in state. "Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched a caravan vehicle at the tourism conclave organised recently by the tourism department. However, the caravan flagged off by the chief minister on a trial basis, belonging to the Hyderabad-based Luxe Caravans, was a Telangana-registered vehicle," the official mentioned. After rolling out the new policy, the govt aims to see caravans registered with the AP transport department plying on AP roads rather than those registered in the neighbouring states, he added. New Town man begins 1,500 km journey across Himalayas on moped

1 2 Kolkata: A 55-year-old Kolkata resident and former Guinness record holder, Subrata Boral, is all set to start a 1,500-km journey in the Himalayas, covering nearly a dozen motorable passes across Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal on a moped. Boral, who held the Guinness record for biking at 20,488 feet, is a resident of Kalipark in New Town. He set off on his journey on Tuesday afternoon from Gulmarg after the humble 110 CC moped left the hill town. In next one month, he will traverse more than 1,500 km while crossing nearly a dozen passes. The highest pass Boral is scheduled to cover is located at an altitude of 19,024 feet. "Umling La is the highest paved road and mountain pass in the world. Apart from that, I have plans to cover passes like Marsimik La (18,314 ft) in the Chang Chenmo range in Ladakh, Khardung La (17,582 ft) in the Ladakh Range in Leh, Tanglang La (17,480 ft) in Leh, and Zoji La (11,575 ft) in Ladakh," Boral said. Boral started riding bikes in 1995 and began covering long stretches on 100 CC bikes. In 1997, he went to Khardung La and reached the Everest Base Camp on a bike in 2000. In 2008, he reached the Chang Chemmo range in Aksai Chin on a bike and made it to the Guinness World Records . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? "It is not the machine, but the man who rides it. I gave it a try with a scooter last year. I traversed nearly 2,000 km in the Himalayan range and decided to use a moped this time," he said. "While a moped is easy to manoeuvre, it lacks the momentum needed to tackle mountain stretches. The one I am using can reach a speed of up to 60 km. But a moped is easier as there are areas where the rider has to drag a two-wheeler," he said.
