City wrestlers to get modern training facilities
Association president Dilraj Alva said that the new wrestling rings will be a boon for wrestlers, especially talented young athletes in the district. "Though Mangaluru city has infrastructure for various sports and games, there is no state-of-the-art infrastructure to hold wrestling events here. The coastal district has contributed to the wrestling world with many of the wrestlers bagging state and national medals for the past several decades.
However, wrestlers in the district lack modern wrestling rings, where district, state, and national events can be organised," Alva said.
The project, estimated to cost more than Rs 1 crore, is scheduled for completion within a year, he said. "Though the project was commenced with an estimate of Rs 1 crore, it may require more funds to complete it. While primary work related to the structure has begun, the process of inviting tenders to procure foam padding, mats and other structural components is in progress.

In addition to wrestling rings, the association also has plans to set up a gymnasium, washrooms, and other facilities.
In the later phase, initiatives will be taken to develop a spectators' gallery and other facilities," he said.
"Currently, wrestlers in the district receive training in traditional garadis and vyayama shales. However, to participate and win medals at national and international events, wrestlers need better infrastructure as the rules are different there. The new wrestling ring will have features that suit national and international standards, and it will provide training for budding wrestlers of the region," he said.
It was freedom fighter and former MLA late M Lokayya Shetty who took initiatives to open an association for amateur wrestlers in the district many decades ago.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (Image Source: Getty) The 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships are scheduled for July 31st to August 3rd, 2025, at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. It's also the U.S. national trials for the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Tokyo this September 2025. As top athletes Sha'Carri Richardson, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and Noah Lyles eye national titles, cash prizes, and Team USA berths up for grabs, fans are tuned in. Full prize money breakdown shows modest payouts for champions USATF has announced that the prize money for the individual event will be sparse for better transparency. First place earns $8,800, second is $6,600, while the third place driver pockets $4,400. Fourth-place gets $3,300, while fifth earns $2,200, and sixth and seventh receive $1,100 each. The nature of the payout rewards the best and second-tier talent. But, the prize for winning remains smaller than it is for other international competitions, such as the Diamond League. While the financial incentives are far less lucrative, the talent that has still earned the right to compete at the event is galvanized by a chance to earn a spot on Team USA and represent the USA on the world stage. 'If India lose this series …': Former England captain says pressure mounting on Gautam Gambhir
India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: Former England captain Michael Atherton has sounded the alarm bells for India head coach Gautam Gambhir , warning that a third consecutive Test series loss could put the former opener under intense pressure just a year into his tenure. Live Score: India vs England 5th Test India trail 1-2 in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England and need a win in the fifth and final Test at The Oval to avoid yet another series defeat. Gambhir's stint has been rocky in red-ball cricket, having already overseen a 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand and a 1-3 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the series finale, Atherton didn't hold back: 'They've lost two series in a row. They lost at home to New Zealand 3-0 and they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1. If they lose this series, then yeah, he's under pressure as a coach.' India vs England 5th Test Preview: Can Shubman Gill's India level the series at The Oval? Highlighting the weight of expectations that comes with leading India, Atherton added: 'India, with all their resources and population strength, they're not a team that people are patient with. They're expected to win every time they walk onto the park. So, three Test series defeats in a row would be a problem for him." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Poll Do you think Gautam Gambhir should be under pressure if India lose the 5th Test against England? Abhimanyu Easwaran's father breaks silence on son's never ending wait: 'I don't understand...'
Beckenham: India's captain Shubman Gill with teammate Abhimanyu Easwaran arrives for a training session ahead of the fourth Test cricket match between India and England, at The County Ground, in Beckenham, England. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar)(PTI07_17_2025_000114A) Top-order batter Abhimanyu Easwaran wasn't picked in India's line-up for the fifth Test against England, extending his wait for a Test debut to 961 days since first being selected in the Indian Test squad. Easwaran didn't get a chance in the ongoing Test series against England, nor in the last edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. The Indian team made four changes to their lineup for the final Test, with Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep being included. "I'm not keeping a count of the number of days that Abhimanyu has been waiting for his Test debut. I am counting the years; it has been three years now. What is the job of a player? It is to score runs. He has done that. People said he didn't perform in two India A matches during the last tour of Australia and didn't get into the team, which is fair enough. But Karun Nair wasn't in the team during the period when Abhimanyu performed before the BGT. Karun wasn't picked for the Duleep Trophy or the Irani Trophy. Abhimanyu scored close to 864 runs if you consider the period from last year to the current year," said Abhimanyu's father Ranganathan Easwaran in an exclusive interaction with by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "Then how do they compare? I don't understand. They gave a chance to Karun Nair. Fair enough, he scored 800-plus runs. The selectors have put faith in him," he added. Ranganathan stated that he has been interacting with Abhimanyu during the ongoing Test series against England and providing words of encouragement. India vs England 5th Test Preview: Can Shubman Gill's India level the series at The Oval? "My son looks a little depressed, but that is bound to happen. Some players jump the gun based on IPL performances which earn them a spot in the Test team. IPL performances should not be counted while selecting the team for the longest format. Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Irani Trophy should be the basis for Test selection," he said. Former India cricketer Arun Lal , who earlier served as the head coach of the Bengal cricket team, stated that he is absolutely baffled by Abhimanyu's non-selection for such an extended period of time. Poll Should Abhimanyu Easwaran have been selected for the fifth Test against England? Yes, he deserves a chance No, other players are more deserving "I have no idea why he isn't being picked in the lineup. It has been so long. Abhimanyu has been performing well and delivering consistent performances. The team management doesn't seem to have too much confidence in him," said Lal. Abhimanyu's coach Vijayakumar Madyalkar termed the cricketer's preparation for the Test series against England "brilliant," stating that he was eagerly awaiting an opportunity to play. "He asked for specific bouncing tracks to negotiate the pace and swing. Abhimanyu would bat for two hours in the morning and one hour in the evening, barring his usual fitness and gym schedule. He was ready to negotiate any challenge that came his way. Abhimanyu would have definitely done very well if he was given an opportunity," stated Madyalkar. India currently trail 1-2 in the five-match Test series against England. Both teams are missing high-profile players, with Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, and Jasprit Bumrah among the noteworthy omissions.
