ITALY'S Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) fought off Belgian Wout van Aert to win stage eight of the Tour de France from Saint-Meen-le-Grand to Laval on Saturday, with defending champion Tadej Pogacar retaining the yellow jersey.
Milan, riding his first Tour, looked to have been caught off guard when Van Aert (Visma–Lease a Bike) hit the front, but the Italian battled back to overtake the Belgian, with Australian Kaden Groves (Alpecin–Deceuninck) coming in third.

Golf-Amazing Grace: Kim becomes fifth Australian woman to claim a major

May 30, 2025; Erin, Wisconsin, USA; Grace Kim tees off at the 1st hole during the second round of the U.S. Women's Open golf tournament. Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-Imagn Images (Reuters) -A career that appeared stuck in second gear took a dramatic turn on Sunday as Grace Kim produced a stunning finish to become Australia's fifth major winner in women's golf at the Evian Championship. The former Youth Olympics champion was three shots adrift of the lead after 14 holes at Evian-les-Bains in the French Alps but went birdie-birdie-par-eagle to force her way into a playoff with Thai world number two Jeeno Thitikul. Kim's charge looked over when she dunked her approach to the 18th into a green-side pond in the first extra hole. Instead, she chipped in for birdie over the same pond to force another hole, then drained a 20-foot eagle putt to deny Thitikul and claim one of the great wins in major golf. In her third season on the LPGA Tour, Kim had been treading water with only one top-10 finish in her previous 11 starts but said she had come to Evian-les-Bains with a different mindset. "Obviously it's a huge achievement for me. I've had a lot of doubts early this year. I was kind of losing motivation,' said the 24-year-old, whose only previous win was in Hawaii in 2023. "I kind of had to get some hard conversations done with the team. Yeah, kind of had to wake up a little bit. "So to be sitting here next to this trophy is definitely surreal." Australian women's golf is in a good spot. Kim's win comes weeks after compatriot Minjee Lee won the Women's PGA Championship, shrugging off a lean period for her third major. Lee watched as Kim holed the winning putt on Sunday and bolted onto the green to spray her with champagne. Kim joins a select list of Australian major winners in women's golf, the others being seven-times champion Karrie Webb, three-times winner Jan Stephenson and Hannah Green. "I saw there is a picture of Karrie as you walk into the locker room, walking down 18 as well, so seeing that each day is motivating," said the Sydney native. "Obviously Minjee's first major was this one and this is now mine as well." (Reporting by Ian Ransom in Melbourne; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Sinner targets golden era after Wimbledon win over Alcaraz

JANNIK SINNER has declared his best tennis is still ahead after dethroning Carlos Alcaraz to win his maiden Wimbledon title. The Italian world number one overcame his Spanish rival 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a gripping final, avenging his French Open defeat last month. Sinner's victory ended Alcaraz's two-year reign at the All England Club and marked his fourth Grand Slam triumph. The 23-year-old has now reached the last four major finals, winning three, but insists he is far from peaking. 'I don't think I'm at my best because at 23 I don't think you can be in your best shape ever. So hopefully I can keep improving,' Sinner said. 'I keep looking up to Carlos because even today I felt like he was doing couple of things better than I did.' The win carried extra significance for Sinner, who had lost five straight matches against Alcaraz before Sunday's breakthrough. Their rivalry has dominated men's tennis, with the pair sharing the last seven Grand Slam titles between them. Sinner admitted the mental challenge of bouncing back from his Roland Garros collapse, where he squandered a two-set lead and three championship points against Alcaraz, had been immense. 'This is the part where I'm the proudest because it really has not been easy,' he said. 'Only me and the people who are close to me know exactly what we have been through on and off the court.' Coach Darren Cahill believes the Sinner-Alcaraz duel could define the next decade of tennis, though cautioned against premature comparisons to the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic era. 'It's difficult to compare this rivalry to what we've just had. It's been a golden age in tennis with Novak and Roger and Rafa,' Cahill said. 'These guys still have a ways to go, but they've started incredibly well.'-AFP

Chelsea boss Maresca hails 'great triumph' in winning Club World Cup

CHELSEA coach Enzo Maresca insisted winning the Club World Cup meant as much as winning the Champions League after his side beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the first edition of FIFA's new competition on Sunday. 'I have the feeling that this competition is going to be as important, if not more important than, the Champions League,' said Maresca after adding the trophy to the UEFA Conference League title his team won in May. Maresca only took over at Chelsea a year ago but was previously on the coaching staff under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City when they won the Champions League in 2023. 'I was lucky to be on the coaching staff of a team that won the Champions League a few years ago, but this competition features the best teams in the world and I think we can value it on the same level,' said the Italian. 'It is a great triumph for us and it will allow the Chelsea fans to have that on our shirt for the next four years, so it is a source of pride.' Maresca said he instructed his players to go out and take the game to PSG from the off -- they went on to net all three goals in the first half with Cole Palmer netting a brace before Joao Pedro added his name to the scoresheet. 'The message was to let them understand that we were here to win the game and I think in the first 10 minutes we showed them that,' Maresca said. 'That set the tone of the game, and then the quality of the players was also important.' England international Palmer was named player of the match after bagging a brace and setting up Joao Pedro's goal. The 23-year-old therefore lived up to his superstar billing -- his face has appeared on billboards around New York advertising the tournament, alongside the likes of Real Madrid duo Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. 'To score the goals was a great feeling, as was the way the team showed fire out there -- the gaffer's game plan was spot on,' he said. 'I just try to do my job every time I go onto the pitch and hopefully I will continue. 'I have seen the billboards in Times Square and outside Madison Square Garden and it is obviously a nice feeling to be alongside those players,' he added - AFP
