Dramas that break new ground can come in all shapes and sizes. Still, the last place you'd expect to find boundaries being smashed is in an ITV crime drama.
It's long been considered unacceptable for characters with a disability to be played by actors without one, which was the norm back in the days of series like Ironside (wheelchair-using police chief) and Longstreet (blind insurance investigator).

The 1% Club - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: "Edna's birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen's birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir's birthday must be the 'X' of January." It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir's birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence. - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The live show, which first launched in 2023, aired on Friday nights in the funnyman's native Birmingham. During its first two series Joe was joined by celebrity guests including Danny Dyer, Alesha Dixon, Greg James, Ross Kemp and Daisy May Cooper who would take part in hilarious skits. His aunties Pauline and Margaret also appeared and became firm fan-favourites among viewers last year. The Sun understands it's hoped the show will return for a third series - but for now Joe is taking extended paternity leave following the birth of his son. Late Night Lycett typically airs in April, meaning pre-production should be getting underway now. An insider said: "Late Night Lycett is a hugely popular format and one that Channel 4 want to keep on air. "Joe's witty one-liners as well as the show's comedy and feel-good vibe means it's not shy of attracting big names out on a Friday evening like Alesha Dixon and Elizabeth Hurley. "Channel 4 are keen for another series but at the moment Joe has taken extended time off to be with his newborn son and family. "It means meetings around the future of Late Night Lycett have not been able to take place. "Bosses are respecting his decision and when he does return to work, talks will take place about whether to commission a new series." 4 Joe Lycett's Channel 4 show will remain off air while he takes extended paternity leave Credit: Getty

Love Island 2025 winners crowned during season 12 final

Toni Laites and Cacherel 'Cach' Mercer have been crowned the winners of ITV's Love Island 2025. The first American bombshell on the UK reality TV series and the professional dancer beat Shakira Khan, 22, from Burnley, and footballer Harry Cooksley, 30, who came second. Electrical engineer Jamie Rhodes, 26, came third with commercial banking executive Yasmin Pettet, 24, while Angel Swift, a 26-year-old aesthetics practitioner who entered the villa as a bombshell, came in fourth place with site engineer Ty Isherwood, 23. Host Maya Jama revealed the winning couple for season 12 of the reality dating show during Monday night's live final. After their names were called, Toni embraced Cach before she thanked the British public for voting for them. Prior to the reveal Toni confirmed that Cach told her he loved her the night before – and that she had said it back. Along with the 2025 title, the couple also took home a £50,000 cash prize. Earlier in the episode the Love Island couples exchanged emotional words to one another. Toni, who was visibly emotional when making her speech, told Cach: 'I don't think I tell you enough, but the way you treat me has made this whole wacky ass experience worth it. 'I think everyone has seen how happy you've made me, and I feel like a different person. I'm just really thankful to be here with you. 'I don't think anyone's ever treated me as good as you do so thank you. You make me feel like a queen.' Cach replied: 'I'm proud of you. You're gonna make me cry. You're so unapologetically yourself. It makes it so easy for you to operate the way I operate. 'I feel like our journey has been a roller coaster. I'm grateful for every moment. 'I don't think I could have done it with anybody else, to be honest with you, and I appreciate you.' Shakira told Harry that he was 'everything' she could want in a partner. She added: 'It's been an amazing last week and I'm excited for the future.' Harry replied and said: 'People say days are like weeks in here, but it really felt like I've known you a lifetime, and I'm so excited for the future, and I'll make so much time for you on the outside. 'My priorities have definitely shifted. You are my priority in life right now, so long may that continue.' Yasmin told Jamie that he became her 'sense of calm'. 'I don't tell you enough, but I'm so genuinely appreciative of you and everything you've done for me in here because my journey would be so, so shit without you,' she added. Jamie replied: 'Every day, I get a feeling of wanting to be around you more and more and knowing that this journey is coming to an end, that we won't be able to spend every second with each other, it's gonna make me really miss this place, but I know that on the outside world, we've got some great things coming.' Angel recalled having a 'spark' with Ty from the very beginning, adding that he is 'so thoughtful'. She said: 'I can't wait for outside life with you. I literally couldn't be happier.' Ty replied: 'I want to thank you and the Love Island gods for sending you in. 'I kind of didn't know where I was, and kind of lost myself a bit. I couldn't find my feet and I feel like you came at the perfect time.' Previous Love Island winners have included Ekin-Su Culculoglu and Davide Sanclimenti (Season 8), Jack Fincham and Dani Dyer (Season 4), Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies (Season 3), who have since split up. Couples who, despite not winning, remain together include Olivia Buckland and Alex Bowen (Season 2), Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury (Season 5) and Dami Hope and Indiyah Polack (Season 8).

UK ‘shock jock' James Whale dies of cancer at the age of 74

His colleague and friend Mike Graham read an obituary on air and paid tribute to Whale, who had been battling stage four kidney cancer. Whale was first diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and had to have one of his kidneys removed. Then, in 2020, the TalkTV host revealed that the cancer had returned in his kidney, spine, brain and lungs. Graham said: 'James began his remarkable career in the early 1970s when he pioneered a new kind of radio in Britain, the late-night shock jock phone-in. 'James would go on to host a variety of programmes for ITV, Sky and the BBC before finding a new audience for talk radio, all the while continuing to make headlines during his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother. 'By the late 1980s, the James Whale radio show had become a cultural phenomenon, broadcasting every weekend on ITV. He attracted millions of viewers, making him a household name. 'In 2006, after surviving kidney cancer, James launched Kidney Cancer UK, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds. In 2024, James was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours, recognising his extraordinary contribution to broadcast and charity. 'James Whale broke the rules, he shaped the airwaves and did it all on his own terms. 'For millions, James wasn't just a broadcaster. He was a companion, a provocateur and a good friend that we'll all never forget. God bless you, James. We'll miss you.' Whale's wife Nadine Lamont-Brown said in a statement: 'It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my darling husband, James Whale, who died peacefully this morning with a smile on his face, holding my hand.' ADVERTISEMENT The leader of Reform UK, Nigel Farage, described Whale as a 'broadcasting pioneer' in a post on X. He said: 'James Whale was a broadcasting pioneer, legend and the king of late-night talk radio. But most importantly, he was a friend who will be missed.' Speaking on TalkTV, he added: 'James genuinely was a broadcasting pioneer, a broadcasting legend, the king of late night phone-ins. 'He would often take a position that was entirely contrary to what he really believed in, just for the sake of public debate. And if you think about that, in the broader context of what freedom, democracy, society is all about, James was completely a part of it.' Whale began his career with Metro Radio in 1974 where he pioneered the late-night radio phone-in. He rose to fame in the 1980s with his frank style, dry wit and no-nonsense approach on late-night programme The James Whale Radio Show, gaining a legion of loyal listeners. He spent 13 years at TalkSport before hosting the drivetime show on LBC and the breakfast show on BBC Essex. Whale went on to host his own show on TalkTV, James Whale Unleashed, every Friday from 10pm-1am. His last interview for the programme was with Mr Farage and aired on July 18. During his career he also hosted Whale On, Dial Midnight and Central Weekend Live for ITV, and Talk About for BBC One.
