Over 7.5 crore jobs created in formal sector in last 7 years: Mandaviya highlights India's employment formalisation progress at ILC
In the last seven years, more than 7.5 crore jobs have been created in the formal sector in India, said Union Minister of Labour & Employment Mansukh Mandaviya at the Plenary Session of the 113th International Labour Conference here. He added that India is building a vibrant education-to-employment ecosystem.
"India has especially progressed in the formalisation of employment. As a result, in the last seven years, more than 7.5 crore jobs have been created in the formal sector. Our employment-linked incentive scheme will promote formal employment further with an allocation of USD 12.8 billion," Mandaviya said at the session.
The Union Minister also highlighted the "strong digital public infrastructure" being built in India."India has built a strong digital public infrastructure, which includes platforms like National Career Service (NCS), which is a one-stop solution for our youth and the working population. We now use NCS to aggregate global job demand and facilitate international labour mobility," he said."We are building a vibrant education-to-employment ecosystem where universities, industry partners, and skill centres are being brought together so our youth can get opportunities based on real market demands," he added.
While holding a bilateral discussion with the Director General, ILO, Gilbert F Houngbo on the sidelines of the International Labour Conference, Mandaviya highlighted the pro-poor and labour welfare schemes undertaken by the Modi Government over the past 11 years.The Union Minister also apprised DG ILO about the national-level Social Protection Data Pooling Exercise that has been carried out by the Government in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation.Recognising these efforts, the ILO acknowledged India's achievement and officially published on its dashboard that 64.3% of India's population, i.e. over 94 crore people, are now covered under at least one social protection benefit. In 2015, this figure was just 19%.In terms of beneficiary count, India now ranks second in the world, providing social protection to around 94 crore citizens. DG ILO praised India's focused welfare policies for the poor and labour class under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.The ILO's criteria for Scheme Consideration for each country include that the scheme should be legislatively backed, in cash, and active. Additionally, verified time series data for the last three years must be provided.
Speaking from Geneva, Mandaviya said, "This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the relentless efforts of the Government in building an inclusive and rights-based social protection ecosystem. The increase marks the fastest expansion in social protection coverage worldwide, reflecting the Government's unwavering commitment to "Antyodaya", i.e., empowering the last mile and fulfilling the promise of leaving no one behind." It is important to note that the present figure reflects only Phase I of the data pooling exercise. This phase focused on beneficiary data of Central sector schemes and women-centric schemes in selected 8 States. With Phase II and further consolidation underway, it is expected that India's total social protection coverage will soon surpass the 100-crore mark upon verification of additional schemes by the ILO.India is also the first country globally to update its 2025 social protection coverage data in the ILOSTAT database, reinforcing its leadership in digital governance and transparency in welfare systems.Moreover, the increase in Social Protection Coverage will further strengthen India's global engagements, particularly in finalising Social Security Agreements (SSAs) with developed nations. These agreements will ensure the portability of social protection benefits for Indian professionals working overseas, while offering partner countries the transparency required for mutual recognition frameworks. This will further bolster India's position in trade and labour mobility negotiations by showcasing a credible and robust social protection regime. Mandaviya is leading an Indian delegation to Geneva, Switzerland, from 10th to 12th June 2025 to participate in the 113th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) of the ILO.India has achieved a historic milestone in the realm of social protection coverage, recording one of the most significant expansions globally. According to the latest data from the International Labour Organization's (ILO) ILOSTAT database, India's social security coverage has increased from 19% in 2015 to 64.3% in 2025, an unprecedented 45 percentage point surge over the past decade.

PM Modi heading to BRICS, declaration on terror to factor in Pahalgam
At a time when Delhi is reaching out to leaders of the Global South and the BRICS grouping, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting five nations in Africa and South America from July 2 to 9. Modi will be visiting Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia and, in his meetings with the leaders of these countries, will discuss issues ranging from trade to defence, energy to technology, and agriculture to health. Ahead of the Prime Minister's trip, Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, indicated that the BRICS declaration 'language' on terrorism will be 'much to our satisfaction'. 'There is no contradiction in the way the members have come out with their understanding, and their sympathy and their solidarity with India on Pahalgam. I think this has been very well captured in the declaration. And all the members are very sensitive to this matter, and there is also a broader understanding in how to deal with this menace of terrorism, and there should be no one … spared in dealing with it. I think that is very well captured, and I don't have to go into details. I think when you get the declaration out, you will see the language is much to our satisfaction there,' he said, while responding to questions on terrorism in the BRICS declaration. The Prime Minister's visit coincides with that of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to the US for a meeting of Quad Foreign Ministers on July 1. It is also emblematic of India's diplomatic balancing between the West and the non-West groupings at a time of strategic hedging in this period of geopolitical flux. Jaishankar, who inaugurated an exhibition titled 'The Human Cost of Terrorism' at the United Nations Headquarters in New York Monday, said, 'Terrorism is one of the gravest threats to humanity. It is the antithesis of everything that the UN stands for, human rights norms and how nations should conduct their dealings to each other.' Targeting Pakistan, he said, 'When terrorism is supported by a State against a neighbour, when it is fuelled by the bigotry of extremism, when it drives a whole host of illegal activities, it is important to call it out publicly. And one way of doing so is to display the havoc that it has wreaked on global society.' 'Five weeks ago, the United Nations Security Council issued a strong condemnation of a particularly horrific act of terrorism in Pahalgam. It demanded that its perpetrators be held accountable and brought to justice. We have since seen that happen. What that response underlines is a larger significance of the message of zero tolerance for terrorism. The world must come together on some basic concepts, no impunity to terrorists, no treating them as proxies and no yielding to nuclear blackmail. Any State sponsorship must be exposed and must be countered… Terrorism anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere. Let that understanding guide our collective thinking and response,' Jaishankar said. The exhibition in New York will highlight the devastating toll of heinous terrorist acts around the world, and the steps taken by the international community to combat terrorism. The Prime Minister, who leaves Wednesday on his tour of five nations, will be attending the summit of the BRICS leaders in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro from July 5 to 7, followed by a State Visit on July 8. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the 17th summit. On the way to Brazil, Modi will stop over in Ghana on July 2 and 3. From there, he will go to Trinidad & Tobago on July 3-4, Argentina on July 4-5 and then head to Brazil. On his way home, he will stop over in Namibia on July 9. He will return to Delhi on July 10. In Ghana, economic cooperation will be emphasised, while his visit to Namibia aims to renew economic ties. In Trinidad and Tobago, India will focus on diversifying cooperation in pharmaceuticals, renewable energy and digital infrastructure. The Prime Minister's visit to Brazil is expected to strengthen trade and explore renewable energy and agricultural research. The visit to Argentina will enhance cooperation in defence, manufacturing and healthcare. Officials said this will be the Prime Minister's 'first ever bilateral visit to Ghana'. It will also be the first visit to Ghana by an Indian Prime Ministerial after three decades. Modi will hold talks with Ghana President John Mahama to review the strong bilateral partnership and discuss further avenues to enhance it through economic, energy and defence collaboration, and development cooperation partnership. This visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) and the African Union. His visit to Trinidad & Tobago, at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, will be his first visit to the country as Prime Minister and the first bilateral visit by a PM since 1999. He will hold talks with the President of Trinidad & Tobago, Christine Carla Kangaloo, and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and discuss further strengthening of the bilateral relationship. He is also expected to address a joint session of the country's Parliament, officials said. In Argentina, he will hold talks with President Javier Milei, review ongoing cooperation and discuss ways to further enhance the bilateral partnership in key areas including defence, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade and investment, and people-to-people ties. In Brazil, Modi will attend the 17th BRICS Summit and follow it with a State Visit at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This will be Modi's fourth visit to Brazil. Officials said that during the Summit, Modi will exchange views on key global issues including reform of global governance, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, responsible use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, economic and financial matters. He is also likely to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Summit. For the State Visit, Modi will travel to Brasilia where he will hold bilateral discussions with President Lula on the broadening of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, including trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health and people-to-people linkages. In Namibia, the final leg of his visit at the invitation of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Modi will hold bilateral talks and also pay homage to the Founding Father and first President of Namibia, Late Dr Sam Nujoma. US judge allows antitrust lawsuit against Apple to proceed
Agency: PTI New Jersey, Jun 30 (AP) A federal judge on Monday rebuffed Apple's request to throw out a US government lawsuit alleging the technology trendsetter has built a maze of illegal barriers to protect the iPhone from competition and fatten its profit margins. The 33-page opinion from US District Judge Xavier Neals in New Jersey will enable an antitrust lawsuit that the US Justice Department filed against Apple 15 months ago to proceed. Neals has set a timetable that could see the case come to trial in 2027. Apple has sought to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing the Justice Department had distorted the contours of the smartphone market and made a series of other misinterpretations that warranted the case be thrown out. But Neals decided there is enough evidence to support the Justice Department's market definitions and concluded the case's key allegations merited further examination at trial. The case seeks to pierce the digital fortress that Apple Inc, based in Cupertino, California, has built around the iPhone, iPad and other products to create a so-called 'walled garden" allowing its hardware and software to mesh seamlessly for users. The Justice Department alleges that walled garden has mostly turned into a shield against competition, creating market conditions that enable it to charge higher prices and stifle innovation. The lawsuit 'sets forth several allegations of technological barricades that constitute anticompetitive conduct," Neals wrote in his opinion. The judge also concluded the Justice Department had pointed toward enough areas of troubling conduct that raised the 'dangerous possibility" that Apple has turned the iPhone into an illegal monopoly. In a Monday statement, Apple reiterated its position that the Justice Department's case 'is wrong on the facts and the law, and we will continue to vigorously fight it in court". The antitrust lawsuit isn't the only legal headache threatening to undercut its profits, which totalled USD 94 billion on sales of USD 295 billion in its fiscal year ending last September. Another federal judge in April issued a civil contempt order banning Apple from collecting any fees from in-app transactions on the iPhone that are funnelled through other options besides its once-exclusive payment processing system that charged commissions ranging from 15 to 30 per cent. Apple also could lose a more than $20 billion annual payment that it gets for making Google the default search tool on the iPhone and other products as part of another antitrust case brought by the Justice Department. A federal judge in Washington is considering whether to ban the deals with Apple as part of a shake-up being proposed to address Google's illegal monopoly in search. Neals' decision to allow the Justice Department's antitrust case to proceed came on the same day that Apple was hit with a lawsuit by app maker Proton amplifying the accusations of wrongful conduct by the company. The lawsuit, which will seek to be certified as a class action presenting thousands of developers who have made iPhone apps, is asking for punitive damages against Apple, as well as a court order to dismantle its walled garden.
