Declining to 46% by 2016–2019
UK-wide, Pakistanis are associated with around 30–33% of genetic birth defects, according to NHS and academic data.
A viral social media post by far-right activist Tommy Robinson has reignited a contentious debate over cousin marriage practices within the British Pakistani community. The post features a video of Robinson citing controversial statistics and calling for a nationwide ban on cousin marriage in the UK, drawing both support and strong criticism online. In the video, Robinson claims that 76% of Pakistanis in Bradford marry their first cousins and alleges that British Pakistanis—who make up around 3% of the UK population—account for 33% of birth defects in the country. He argues that this is a significant burden on the UK's healthcare system and attributes the cultural norm to historical Islamic practices.Robinson goes further to call cousin marriage 'never right' and urges the British government to ban the practice outright. His comments have been widely condemned as inflammatory and racist by critics across social media. The post has divided public opinion. Some users expressed concern over the potential genetic and economic impacts of consanguineous marriage . Others accused Robinson of distorting facts to promote a xenophobic agenda.'This is a mix of distorted stats and open racism... If the concern is public health, fine. Focus on education and awareness, not hate,' said one user on X (formerly Twitter). While cousin marriage is legal in the UK, public health experts acknowledge the increased risk of genetic disorders in children born to first cousins. A BBC report from February, citing a Bradford-based study, found that:The Grok AI fact-checker notes that the 76% figure cited by Robinson is likely exaggerated, referencing the Born in Bradford study , which reported:Cousin marriage is a long-standing tradition in many parts of South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Within the UK, it's more common among immigrant communities, particularly British Pakistanis , as part of efforts to preserve wealth, property, and family ties. However, critics argue that blaming a single ethnic or religious group for public health burdens oversimplifies the issue. Other key factors—like poverty, lack of healthcare access, and systemic inequality—also play a significant role.A 2022 DW article cited a 2017 report linking Pakistan's high rate of genetic mutations to its 'heterogenous composition' and deeply entrenched tribal and caste systems, which encourage inter-family marriages. Over 1,000 mutations across 130 genetic disorders have been documented in Pakistan to date.

Epstein memo sparks backlash: Trump allies warn of fallout — ‘You're going to lose 10 percent of the MAGA movement'

A newly released government memo dismissing long-swirling conspiracy theories surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier and convicted sex offender, has triggered strong backlash from key figures in Donald Trump's political orbit, who now accuse the President of undermining the transparency he once promised. Among the loudest critics is Trump's former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who posted a sharp rebuke on social media. 'Please understand the EPSTEIN AFFAIR is not going away,' Flynn wrote in a direct message to Trump, warning that unanswered questions would make it harder for the administration to 'move forward on so many other monumental challenges our nation is facing.' Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon echoed the frustration in a fiery speech at Turning Point USA's Student Action Summit on July 12. He warned that downplaying Epstein's ties and death could fracture Trump's voter base. 'For this to go away, you're going to lose 10 percent of the MAGA movement,' Bannon said. 'If we lose 10 percent of the MAGA movement right now, we're going to lose 40 seats in 2026, we're going to lose the presidency.' Political commentator Megyn Kelly also weighed in with skepticism on X (formerly Twitter), questioning the credibility of recent law enforcement reviews into Epstein's ties with powerful figures. 'There are really only two options,' she wrote. 'Either there's no huge undisclosed there there on Epstein… or there is a scandal that's being covered up & it's at [Trump's] direction.' Kelly pointed to inconsistencies in Pam Bondi's public statements as further evidence of confusion or possible misdirection. The White House memo, released on Monday, states that after a comprehensive review of over 300 gigabytes of data, authorities found no incriminating client list and no indication that Epstein had blackmailed powerful individuals. It also reaffirmed the FBI's long-standing conclusion that Epstein died by suicide in his New York jail cell in 2019 — not as a result of foul play. The backlash reached a boiling point after Trump himself appeared to distance his administration from the controversy, calling it a distraction driven by Democrats. 'For years, it's Epstein, over and over again,' Trump posted on Truth Social. 'Why are we giving publicity to files written by Obama, Crooked Hillary, Comey, Brennan, and the losers and criminals of the Biden administration?' His post left many longtime supporters stunned — especially after Bondi's earlier comments raised hopes that long-sought revelations were finally coming.

Muhammadu Buhari, former Nigerian President, dies at 82 in London

Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82 years in a London clinic, PTI quoted his press secretary as saying on Sunday. Prior to his death, he was receiving medical treatment in London. "President Buhari died today in London at about 4:30 p.m. (1530 GMT), following a prolonged illness," President Bola Tinubu's spokesperson said in a post on X. Buhari had previously led Nigeria twice as a military head of state and a democratic president. He was the first president to defeat a sitting president after he was elected in 2015. Born in December 1942 in Daura in Katsina state in the far north of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari was admitted to the Nigerian Military Training College soon after leaving school. He joined the Nigerian army shortly after independence. He undertook officer training in the UK from 1962-1963 and climbed up the ranks. He became a military commander by 1978, and by 1983, he became the country's military ruler after a coup, against elected President Shehu Shagari. Though he claimed he was not one of the plotters but was installed by those who held the real power and needed a figurehead, reported BBC. Muhammadu Buhari was never considered a natural politician, but a self-styled converted democrat. Burari achieved a historic victory in 2015 after three failed attempts and became the country's first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent President. He was re-elected for another four-year term in 2019. Always popular among the poor of the north, however, Burari also had the advantage of a united opposition grouping behind him for his 2015 campaign. Burari united people to fight against the Islamist insurgency in the north. He had promised to tackle corruption and nepotism in government, and create employment opportunities for young Nigerians at that time.

"Fort that Chhangur Baba built in India was funded by Pakistan": BJP MP Brij Lal

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 13 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Brij Lal on Sunday alleged that Chhangur Baba, running a massive religious conversion racket, was funded by Pakistan and other Islamic countries to make India an Islamic country. Speaking in Lucknow, Lal claimed that the India-Nepal border has been a sensitive area, with madrasas near the border serving as refugee camps. 'The India Nepal border has been a very sensitive area. These madrasas near the border are refugee camps. The fort that Chhangur Baba built in India was funded by Pakistan and other Islamic countries. They have only one goal: to make India an Islamic country,' Lal told ANI. Chhangur Baba, whose real name is Jalaluddin, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly running a conversion racket that targeted Hindu women, particularly those who are poor, widowed, or socially vulnerable. Baba's associate Neetu alias Nasreen was also arrested and is currently in ATS custody. The ATS investigation revealed that Baba's network received nearly Rs 500 crore in foreign funding over three years, with Rs 300 crore allegedly funneled through illegal hawala channels via Nepal. 'They cannot win in a war... Our ATS has exposed this so-called Baba and his network... Funding is coming from abroad. Terrorists have been funded for a long time. Chhangur Baba used to sell rings on a bicycle, now owns 400-500 crores... All of this has been exposed in Modi and Yogi's rule, and it will be uprooted...,' added Lal. A resident of Madpur village in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district, Chhangur Baba, Neetu alias Nasreen, and others are accused of being involved in a large-scale conspiracy involving unlawful religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funding, and activities posing a potential threat to national security and communal harmony. The UP Police's Anti-Terrorism Squad had arrested Chhangur Baba and his aide in Lucknow on July 5. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said that illegal religious conversions are part of a deep-rooted conspiracy against the nation and society, and declared that such acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He highlighted the recent action taken in Balrampur, where a large-scale conversion racket was busted. He said that the state government has exposed a network involved in forced religious conversions, funded by foreign sources. CM Yogi Adityanath said, 'We have proceeded with a huge investigation in Balrampur. You must have seen he (Jalaluddin alias Chhingur Baba) had fixed rates (for conversion). He was receiving foreign funding. Transactions of more than Rs 100 crores were found in his 40 bank accounts.' Describing these developments as a threat to both social and financial security, the Chief Minister asserted that converting Scheduled Caste individuals by luring or intimidating them is unconstitutional and violates the spirit of social harmony. 'Such acts aim to break society and harm communal amity,' Yogi said, adding that strict action is being taken against those involved. (ANI)
