Man Utd fend off interest to complete their best business of summer window

Daily Mirror19 hours ago
There may not have been much to shout about at Manchester United to date this summer. However, tying down 14-year-old wonderkid JJ Gabriel, widely considered among the best talents of his generation, suggests there are still strong reasons to be excited about the future.
The mercurial teenage sensation - dubbed 'Kid Messi' - is rated so highly within the club, Cristiano Ronaldo previously took a shine to him during his second spell at Old Trafford.
Gabriel caught the eye of the United legend and six-time Ballon d'Or winner when featured in the same Red Devils youth side as Cristiano Ronaldo Jr, whom he formed a close friendship with.
While United have spent the past few weeks haggling over a transfer fee with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo, director of football Jason Wilcox and director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves have struck gold with Gabriel.
It's understood the pair have both played instrumental roles in edging an agreement with one of the world's most highly-coveted young stars over the line.
United's Premier League rivals had been monitoring the situation closely and were ready to pounce should they have received any encouragement Gabriel might be available.
Crucially, he also holds an Irish passport and that is significant because it means Gabriel would be able to feature for teams within the European Union from the age of just 16.
Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have all been attentive to the situation because usually, gems such as Gabriel are not considered attainable until they've turned 18.
For all of their flaws, INEOS have put huge emphasis on the continued importance of their academy and youth development since purchasing their 27.7 per cent stake in United in February 2024.
There is total confidence Gabriel has all the tools to become a first-team regular at the Theatre of Dreams having already scored three goals - two on his debut against Leeds - for United's U18s.
He also made his England U15 debut in February and is currently the talk of Carrington having frequently wowed club staff.
Last October, 'Kid Messi' suffered a heavy, early blow and dislocated his shoulder in a Floodlit Cup fixture against Blackburn Rovers.
Medical staff were reluctant to allow him to continue despite successfully popping it back into the joint. Gabriel insisted he wanted to make amends and he did so by scoring a stunning treble whilst also notching an assist.
It spoke volumes of his character, perseverance and dedication to succeed at one of the world's most-famous footballing institutions.
United are due to report for pre-season tomorrow and in the past week, Gabriel has been pictured sporting a training kit with an official squad number of 95.
He is not 15 until October and cannot sign professional terms until his 17th birthday. But given Ruben Amorim has needed no invitation to hand youth-team prospects senior minutes, there is every chance Gabriel is on track to become United's youngest-ever player.
The record is currently held by goalkeeper David Gaskell, who was 16 and 19 days old when he figured for United in 1956.
Sky has slashed the price of its bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games next season, an increase of up to 100 more.

Premier League icon 'vetoes Serie A move for Jamie Vardy after deal was agreed for former Leicester striker'

Jamie Vardy will not be joining a Serie A side after their Premier League great of a manager vetoed the move, according to a report. Vardy brought an end to his legendary Leicester career at the end of the season, netting his 200th goal for the club in his final game. The 38-year-old has made it clear that he has no plans to retire and has been linked with a move to Genoa in recent weeks. However, the Italian media claim that move will not be taking place with the club's manager stepping in to shut it down. Genoa's boss is Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira, a key member of the historic 'Invincibles' side of 2004. And La Repubblica claim that Vardy was closing in on a switch to Genoa after the expiration of his Foxes contract. They say that won't be happening with Vieira unconvinced by the former England striker and overruling the move. Genoa sporting director Flavio Ricciardella was working on the deal with Vardy with sponsors due to cover his wage with the Serie A side. Vardy now looks likely to continue his career in Scotland with Rangers leading the race for his signature. Como and Nottingham Forest have also been linked with the Premier League veteran, who won 26 caps for England. After finishing his playing career at Man City, Vieira's first managerial post was at New York City FC. The Major League Soccer side are part of City Football Group founded by Man City owner Sheikh Mansour. Vieira won many admirers during his two-and-a-half-year stint with NYCFC, guiding to the club from 17th in 2015 to a fourth-place finish in his first season and then second the following year. The Arsenal 'Invincible' was even tipped to replace Arsene Wenger when the Gunners' boss left the Emirates in 2018. Instead, Vieira went to Ligue 1 club Nice where he achieved seventh and fifth-placed finishes during his two full seasons which persuaded Crystal Palace to make him Roy Hodgson's successor in 2021. His stint at Selhurst Park start well as he led the Eagles to a 12th-placed finish in his first season, earning praise for an attacking style. Things declined sharply in his second season, however, and he was sacked after a run of 12 games without a win with the club scoring just 21 goals in 27 matches. Vieira then served just one year of a three-year deal at Strasbourg before stepping down and taking up his position at Genoa four months later.

Transfer news live: Arsenal in advanced Gyokeres talks after major signing, Man Utd want Calvert-Lewin

The summer transfer window rolls on as Premier League clubs and those around Europe look to add to their squads. Arsenal appear to finally be making progress on the protracted Viktor Gyokeres deal, with reports stating that they have reached a complete agreement on personal terms with the striker and are on the verge of an agreement with Sporting over the fee. They finally completed the Martin Zubimendi deal on Sunday and a medical is planned for incoming Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard. The Gunners are also hoping to secure a deal for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera after the La Liga outfit rebuffed their initial offer. They have sights on Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze, although face competition from Tottenham – who have had a bid for Mohammed Kudus rejected by West Ham. Manchester United secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m early in this window and have now nabbed teenage Paraguayan defender Diego Leon. They are negotiating with Brentford about Bryan Mbeumo and have Sporting's Gyokeres and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins on their list of potential additions while Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho face exits from the club. Liverpool confirm new pre-season start date with tributes planned to Diogo Jota

Liverpool players will report back to the club's training ground on Tuesday - but a decision is yet to be made on whether their opening pre-season friendly will go ahead. The first group of Reds had been due to report back on Friday, with a larger contingent returning on Monday July 7. However, the tragic death of Diogo Jota on Thursday saw the club postpone the start of their training schedule. Jota, 28, and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a car crash in Spain on Thursday morning. They had been travelling across Spain to catch a ferry from Santander to Portsmouth, with the Portugal international due to return to the club on Monday. The majority of Arne Slot's first-team squad attended their funeral on Saturday in the small Portuguese town of Gondomor, j oining a delegation of senior club officials who had visited the player's wake on Friday night. The Premier League champions are now set to return to the club's AXA Training Centre on Tuesday to begin their pre-season. Liverpool's first friendly of the summer is currently scheduled for Sunday July 13 against Preston North End at Deepdale. However, a decision regarding whether the match will proceed has not yet been made. A decision will only be finalised once the team have returned for pre-season training and after all players and staff have been consulted, as they continue to mourn their close friend and colleague. Preston are currently preparing in anticipation of the match proceeding, which would be their first home friendly of the summer. The Championship side will maintain communication with the Premier League champions and are leaving the decision on the game to Liverpool and their players. It is understood that Preston are organising tributes to Jota at Deepdale, should the fixture go ahead. Jota's funeral took place at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar catholic church on Saturday morning. Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo, Darwin Nunez, Ryan Gravenberch, Federico Chiesa and manager Arne Slot were among those to attend. Ex-Liverpool players in Caoimhin Kelleher, Jordan Henderson and James Milner were also present. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
