Premier League icon 'vetoes Serie A move for Jamie Vardy after deal was agreed for former Leicester striker'

Daily Mail2 days ago
Jamie Vardy will not be joining a Serie A side after their Premier League great of a manager vetoed the move, according to a report.
Vardy brought an end to his legendary Leicester career at the end of the season, netting his 200th goal for the club in his final game.
The 38-year-old has made it clear that he has no plans to retire and has been linked with a move to Genoa in recent weeks.
However, the Italian media claim that move will not be taking place with the club's manager stepping in to shut it down.
Genoa's boss is Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira, a key member of the historic 'Invincibles' side of 2004.
And La Repubblica claim that Vardy was closing in on a switch to Genoa after the expiration of his Foxes contract.
They say that won't be happening with Vieira unconvinced by the former England striker and overruling the move.
Genoa sporting director Flavio Ricciardella was working on the deal with Vardy with sponsors due to cover his wage with the Serie A side.
Vardy now looks likely to continue his career in Scotland with Rangers leading the race for his signature.
Como and Nottingham Forest have also been linked with the Premier League veteran, who won 26 caps for England.
After finishing his playing career at Man City, Vieira's first managerial post was at New York City FC. The Major League Soccer side are part of City Football Group founded by Man City owner Sheikh Mansour.
Vieira won many admirers during his two-and-a-half-year stint with NYCFC, guiding to the club from 17th in 2015 to a fourth-place finish in his first season and then second the following year.
The Arsenal 'Invincible' was even tipped to replace Arsene Wenger when the Gunners' boss left the Emirates in 2018.
Instead, Vieira went to Ligue 1 club Nice where he achieved seventh and fifth-placed finishes during his two full seasons which persuaded Crystal Palace to make him Roy Hodgson's successor in 2021.
His stint at Selhurst Park start well as he led the Eagles to a 12th-placed finish in his first season, earning praise for an attacking style.
Things declined sharply in his second season, however, and he was sacked after a run of 12 games without a win with the club scoring just 21 goals in 27 matches.
Vieira then served just one year of a three-year deal at Strasbourg before stepping down and taking up his position at Genoa four months later.

Ryder Cup hopefuls face 'two biggest weeks'

Europe's Ryder Cup hopefuls are entering "the two biggest weeks left before qualification ends" for the biennial match against the United States, says captain Luke week's Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club near Edinburgh is followed by the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Donald, who led Europe to a 16½-11½ victory in Rome two years ago, is counting on his key players to step up this month."These are big weeks against the strongest fields so you want to see the top guys play well," Donald told BBC Scotland."There are some guys that have pretty much staked a claim for their place in the team but there are a few spots definitely open and these weeks are big for those guys."Rory McIlroy is the only player to have mathematically guaranteed his spot in the 12-strong team that will face the US at Bethpage Black in New York in pair Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton are in second and third on the list, external with qualifying ending after the British Masters on 24 August - the US qualifying period ends on 17 August after the PGA Tour's BMW top six make the team with Donald picking the six others, while the US team will be selected in a similar way by their skipper Keegan Robert MacIntyre is currently fourth on the European list and has really kicked on from making his Ryder Cup debut in 2023, where he was unbeaten, winning two-and-a-half points out of 28-year-old from Oban followed victory at last year's Canadian Open by winning the Scottish Open, which is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour."It helped him really grow as a golfer and gave him the belief that he could perform with the very best," said Donald of MacIntyre's Ryder Cup the Englishman added that he has been "very impressed" by the way MacIntyre has "adapted his game to the US".The world number 14 has made 15 cuts from his 17 PGA Tour events this season, including his runner-up finish at last month's US Open, where he finished one shot behind champion JJ Spaun at Oakmont."When you make that transition from playing mostly in Europe to playing over there, it is difficult," said Donald."The fields are deeper. It's harder. But he was still consistent and I was watching his stats quite a lot."Even from when he qualified in Rome to where he was before the second place in the US Open, his stats were quite a bit better."He won twice last year, in Canada and here [Scottish Open at Renaissance Club]. I saw the improvement in statistics and it was only a matter of time before he had a really, really good week and he almost pulled it off." 'McIlroy Masters win great for morale' Donald is the first European captain to lead two successive teams since Bernard Gallacher in the 1990s - defeats at Kiawah Island in 1991 and at the Belfry in 1993 were followed by victory at Oak Hill in New York state in leading the team to victory in Rome two years ago Donald says he now has an insight into what is required to win away from home - something Europe has not achieved since the 'Miracle of Medinah' 2012, while the US have not won on European soil since 1993."The guys wanted me to come back and to have another chance," said the 47-year-old Englishman. "Not many people have ever had that chance and certainly I understand that it's a great honour and a great privilege, but also a very tough challenge being in New York."It's hard to win away Ryder Cups but having the continuity of a repeat captain, a lot of the guys know me, know how I work."They already trust in my abilities to lead them and I'm happy, in general, with how things are shaping up. You're always continually trying to learn. "It needs a little bit of a different approach, especially with how to deal with the crowd."That's really my role - getting them into a good frame of mind and giving them the reasons why I think they can win."This season there have been five European winners of PGA Tour events, including McIlroy who joined the list of Grand Slam winners when he became Masters champion at Augusta in April."What Rory did at the Masters is great for our team, for our morale," added Donald. "He's always going to be an amazing leader inside the team room as a player."It's just so many consistent weeks where the top, top guys seem to be playing at a high level. You need that ultimately if you want to win. Without that, it's almost impossible."

Man Utd 'pull plug' on big-money Amazon documentary due to Ruben Amorim

Manchester United had been in talks of have their own 'All or Nothing' series filmed by Amazon but Ruben Amorim is against the idea and club bosses have now said no to the deal Manchester United have backed out of having their own documentary filmed by Amazon as Ruben Amorim fears it could become a distraction. The Premier League giants had been in discussions for months about having their own 'All or Nothing' series. Already Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham have had their own fly-on-the-wall documentaries filmed, but it requires the club opening up their doors, which their head coach wasn't willing to allow. ‌ It is understood Amazon were prepared to pay £10million to gain access but the man in the dugout hasn't pulled the plug on the deal, which had been in the pipeline. Amorim was the driving force behind saying no after the concept was put to him. ‌ It was discussed during a meeting of the club's executive committee, who were all united in backing the manager's stance and no documentary will now take place, according to reports. Other factors like the nature of the commercial agreement were cited as factors, as reported by the Telegraph. Amorim knows he is under pressure to produce results and having the cameras up close and personal may not aid his cause. He has a shocking record since taking charge, which led United to post their worst ever Premier League season as they finished down in 15th. The Portuguese boss needs a big pre-season - on and off the pitch - if he is to turn things around. He knows that a slow start will only add pressure. Having cameras inside the dressing room for potentially defining moments is ideal for broadcast, but unlikely to be high on Amorim's wish list. ‌ There was a financial motive to having Amazon involved with the club making no secret of their need to consider the balance sheet. A post-season tour to Asia was almost solely financially driven and the extra cash could've eased any pressure, but they will now do without the streaming service's money. The previous docs that have been made it the past have had to cover the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, which led to Jose Mourinho's return to management. The series on Arsenal began with them sitting bottom of the league as some fans turned on Arteta. It also leaves the club - and certain individuals - open to very public criticism as their methods and reactions to instances during the season are broadcast for the world to see. United's hierarchy would also have need to be visible and potentially explain some of their less popular decisions. Florent Malouda praises Wrexham's superb success story

That is the view of Chelsea and France legend Florent Malouda who is enjoying watching the story unfolding at The Racecourse where Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are co-owners. Phil Parkinson's side finished runners-up in League One last season, securing an historic third successive promotion. It promises to be much tougher in the second tier next term - Wrexham last played at that level 43 years ago - but Malouda says the north Wales club can take heart from how Brentford managed to reach the top-flight where they have spent the last four campaigns and finished 10th in 2024-25. Speaking on behalf of bet365 and their launch of the free-to-play Club World Championship Tournament Predictor game, Malouda said: "It's a wonderful success story, especially when you consider people coming from Hollywood, getting involved in football, and being so successful so quickly. There is something happening there. "I hope the story continues and that they get promoted to the Premier League. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS Wrexham's Championship rivals Birmingham City complete sixth new signing Ben Foster and Ben Tozer set to appear at Soccer Camps on Wrexham Down Under Tour "Of course, it's more challenging now to step up from Championship to Premier League, but it has been done in the past. "Look at teams like Brentford, they got promoted and have managed to stay in the Premier League. "I hope that happens for Wrexham, they have a glamourised story around the club and I hope they make a movie one day. They'll shoot a movie based on the true story of Wrexham."
