Patwari demands MSP for tomatoes as crop rots in fields amid prices crash
Chief minister Mohan Yadav
made a firm decision on Friday that farmers booked for stubble burning will not be paid the Chief Minister's Kisan Kalyan Scheme annual bonus of Rs 6,000 and neither will the govt buy their crops at minimum support price (MSP). As the govt hardened its stand against stubble burning, state Congress president
Jitu Patwari
said that the govt should provide immediate relief to farmers and stop testing their patience.
Patwari said that tomato producing farmers are facing a major crisis as prices have fallen to Rs 3 to Rs 4 per kg. "Tomato producing farmers in Chhatarpur are going through a crisis. The price of tomato has fallen to Rs 3 and 4 per kg, due to which farmers are not being able to cover their cost of production. They have stopped irrigation and are now letting the ripe crop rot in the fields or feeding it to cattle. If the government investigates honestly, such a situation can also happen in many districts of Malwa, Nimar and Bundelkhand regions," the state Congress president said.
He argued that this situation is not due to any natural disaster but is the result of govt indifference and policy failure. "The farmers of Chhatarpur are alive today, but their hope is dying. It is unfair that the hard-earned crop is getting destroyed and the govt remains silent. The farmer is not a beggar, he is the country's food provider. The govt will have to intervene immediately," Patwari said in a statement on Friday.
Farmers grow tomatoes every year in many districts including Tikamgarh, Panna, Niwari, Damoh, Ratlam, Mandsaur and Dhar but they do not get the right market, fair price and protection, Patwari argued. "Due to lack of processing units, farmers have to sell their produce at cheap rates or destroy it. What is worrying is that the govt has neither a policy nor any price control system," the state Congress president said.
Patwari demanded that the BJP govt announce minimum support price (MSP) for tomato and vegetable producers as well. He said that govt procurement centres should be opened in every district, where farmers' produce can be purchased at the minimum price.
He also demanded an immediate relief package for affected farmers and compensation payments for losses incurred. "Farmers' hopes should be strengthened by setting up processing units, cold storage and food parks," Jitu Patwari said. "Long-term agricultural policy should be implemented for vegetable producing farmers in the state, so that they do not have to face the crisis of market and price every year," he added.
Patwari claimed that not only tomato producers, but wheat, paddy and soybean farmers are also facing a crisis in the state. "Due to delays and technical glitches in govt procurement of wheat every year, farmers are forced to sell wheat at throwaway prices in the open market. Corruption, lack of weighing machines and interference of middlemen are common in the purchase of paddy. The market price of soybean is consistently lower than the MSP, and bonus schemes are also incomplete" Patwari maintained. "The chief minister should specify when MSP of Rs 2700 for wheat, Rs 3100 for paddy and Rs 6000 per quintal for soybean will be implemented as was promised in the BJP assembly election manifesto," he said.

Congress Rift Widens As Party Leader Says ‘Shashi Tharoor Not With Us, Not Invited'
Amid rising tensions within the Congress party, senior leader and former Union Minister K. Muraleedharan on Sunday declared that Shashi Tharoor would no longer be invited to any party programme in Thiruvananthapuram unless he alters his stance on key national security issues. His remarks have further exposed the widening rift between Tharoor and the party's Kerala leadership. Speaking to reporters, Muraleedharan said, 'Till he (Tharoor) changes his stance, we will not invite him to any party programme held in Thiruvananthapuram. He is not with us, so there is no question of him boycotting an event.' The Congress Working Committee (CWC) member was, according to Muraleedharan, 'no longer considered one of us.' The senior leader's statement comes at a critical juncture, with the Congress and the INDIA bloc preparing to confront the Modi government in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. They are expected to highlight what they term a 'security lapse' in the Pahalgam terror attacks and question the outcomes of the government's high-profile Operation Sindoor. Tharoor, who had led an all-party delegation to the Americas as part of Operation Sindoor, had earlier said at a public event in Kochi that national interest must come before partisan politics. 'We must always put the country first. Political parties exist to make countries better,' he said. Tharoor's position — including expressions of support for the armed forces and the central government on national security — has drawn sharp criticism from within his own party. 'Many have attacked me for putting the nation first. But I will stand my ground because I believe this is the right thing to do for the country,' Tharoor asserted, defending his stand. However, his remarks have not gone down well with senior Congress leaders, including Muraleedharan, who recently criticised Tharoor for sharing a survey that projected him as the most preferred Chief Ministerial face of the UDF. 'He should first decide which party he belongs to,' Muraleedharan retorted. Adding to the tensions, Tharoor's recent article criticising the late Indira Gandhi's handling of the Emergency in a Malayalam daily had also sparked backlash within party ranks. Calling for clarity, Muraleedharan said, 'If he feels constrained within the Congress, he should choose a clear political path.' The feud has now become a full-blown internal crisis, raising questions about Tharoor's future in the party and further complicating Congress's unity efforts in Kerala ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Chandigarh Congress criticises UT administration for demolition of Furniture Market
1 2 Chandigarh: Chandigarh Congress on Sunday criticised the UT administration for bulldozing and demolishing the decades-old Furniture Market, leaving hundreds of shopkeepers devastated and rendering scores of workers jobless. Congress stated that the action was undertaken in disregard of the Honourable High Court's observation that a sympathetic view be taken and that efforts be made by the administration to see if alternate sites could be allotted to the affected parties to continue their livelihood. "Rather than pursuing a humane and consultative process, the administration opted for an abrupt and arbitrary demolition without reasonable time for evacuation and without any arrangement for the protection or relocation of inventory and assets. As a result, numerous shopkeepers suffered irreparable financial losses, losing not only their goods and furniture but also the very foundations of their businesses," Congress said. Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky strongly condemned the administration's insensitivity, saying, "What we are witnessing is not governance, but a systematic dismantling of the social fabric that binds our city. The administration has shown no regard for human suffering and no commitment to the principles of a welfare state. We demand that an immediate and comprehensive rehabilitation scheme be introduced and that alternate sites be allotted to the affected shopkeepers to enable them to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Anything less would be a betrayal of the very ethos of governance in a democratic and socialist republic." The Congress stated that it stands firmly with the affected families and pledges to raise this matter at every appropriate forum until justice is served. It is imperative that the administration is held accountable for this gross overreach and made to answer for its repeated failure to act with fairness, compassion, and responsibility. Lucky also criticised the Modi-led central govt, under whom the Chandigarh administration works directly, for failing to provide relief to these decades-old establishments. (Photos Pritam Thakur)

MLAs may lose tickets as delimitation redraws election map: Himanta
1 2 3 Guwahati: Many sitting BJP MLAs in Assam may lose tickets for the state assembly elections to be held early next year, as several new constituencies were created by dissolving erstwhile constituencies during the delimitation process in the state two years ago. After a two-day "Chintan Baithak" with 51 party leaders, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "All sitting MLAs cannot get tickets. Many may voluntarily opt out. Several constituencies were dissolved during the delimitation, and new faces will be introduced, especially since SC and ST seats have increased." The 2023 delimitation exercise raised the number of scheduled caste (SC) constituencies from eight to nine, and scheduled tribe (ST) seats from 16 to 19. In West Karbi Anglong district, the autonomous districts gained one seat. The Bodoland Territorial Region saw its seats increase from 11 to 15. Baithalangso (ST), previously the lone seat in West Karbi Anglong, was replaced with two new constituencies — Rongkhang (ST) and Amri (ST). The CM said no one can close the door for new faces. "But there is time to take a decision on how many new faces will be introduced. Many party works related to the elections will begin after Independence Day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Then, we will begin assessing the performance of the sitting MLAs," he added. During the assessment, the CM said, how the govt schemes have been implemented and to what extent in every assembly constituency will be thoroughly examined. "Along with this, there will be other factors which will also be scrutinised before taking a decision on candidatures," he added. On the other hand, the CM said during the "Chintan Baithak", how the manifesto would be, to whom the candidature would be given, how the publicity would be carried out, how the campaign would be designed, what the issues would be, and how the narratives would be, etc., were discussed in depth. The feedback from all the 51 senior party workers and the minutes of the Chintan Baithak will be used by the BJP's central committee and state leadership to complete the election process in a disciplined manner, the CM said. Regarding the alliance with BJP's present key ally in the state, AGP, Sarma said there is no practical reason for which the alliance should not be carried forward. "AGP has been in alliance with the BJP since 2014, and the alliance will continue. Issues may arise regarding tickets. During that process, someone will get a ticket and someone will not," he added.
