Hanwha Ocean eyes KDDX project with smart ship, propulsion technologies
Scheduled for completion in 2031, the 7.8 trillion won ($5.4 billion) project aims to develop a state-of-the-art naval combat system, featuring six 6,000-ton Aegis-equipped destroyers built using Korea's homegrown technologies.
The selection of a contractor for the detailed design and construction of the fleet's lead ship, originally expected in July 2023, is now set for April 2024.
Advancing all-electric propulsion for KDDX
Hanwha Ocean is working to acquire the technology needed to produce electric propulsion systems for surface vessels, a critical component for building all-electric destroyers.
In Korea, this technology has only been implemented in submarines, specifically the Jangbogo KSS-III Batch-I and Batch-II, both built by Hanwha Ocean. In contrast, global naval forces, including those of the US and UK, have already deployed all-electric warships.
The shipbuilder said the KDDX destroyers will be powered by high-output 25-megawatt motors, emphasizing that electrifying all ship systems, including weapons and propulsion, will enhance operational capabilities and potential applications.
Last year, Hanwha Ocean successfully completed a simulated test for stable power control in an all-electric military vessel. The company has also developed a hybrid propulsion system integrating gas turbines and motors for the Ulsan-class Batch-II surface vessels.
Smart bridge technology for next-gen warships
Hanwha Ocean is also advancing smart bridge technology for military ships, inspired by aircraft cockpit designs. These smart command spaces feature ergonomic layouts to improve crew efficiency and operational convenience, ultimately reducing staffing requirements on the bridge.
The company has already integrated a smart bridge into the conceptual design of Korea's Auxiliary Training Ship II. Additionally, the Korean Navy's auxiliary submarine rescue ship, Ganghwado, delivered by Hanwha Ocean last year, was equipped with a control console and operational display that integrates various functions.
Enhancing rapid response and cybersecurity in naval warfare
As part of the KDDX project's basic design, Hanwha Ocean has proposed integrating various control systems into a single, unified network — a core technology expected to define the future of military vessels.
Traditionally, military ships rely on separate systems for functions such as communications and weapon management. Hanwha Ocean's unified system aims to enhance decision-making and responsiveness in high-intensity combat situations.
Hanwha plans to extend this integrated approach to the 5th and 6th Ulsan-class Batch-III frigates, which it will construct, as well as the 1st and 2nd ships of the Ulsan-class Batch-VI.
To address cybersecurity risks associated with an integrated naval network, Hanwha Ocean and its defense affiliate, Hanwha Systems, have developed a cybersecurity system for military vessels.
This system has been certified by a US-based ship classification society, making it the first vessel cybersecurity system in Asia to receive such recognition.

AI demand spurs chip giants' facility growth
South Korean semiconductor giants are ramping up facility investments to expand their future market share, encouraged by upbeat projections of explosive growth in the artificial intelligence chip sector. Samsung Electronics is reviewing plans to restart construction of new chip manufacturing plants in Korea, while SK hynix recently began construction of a new back-end processing facility. According to industry sources Thursday, Samsung is preparing to resume the construction of the Pyeongtaek Campus Line 4 (P4), which was halted last year. P4 is Samsung's fourth large-scale chip plant under construction, divided into four phases. Phases 1 and 3 are in their final stages of construction, while sources say orders have recently been issued to resume work on Phases 2 and 4. Full-scale construction is expected to begin within two to three months. Two areas at the P4 facility were originally planned for foundry production lines, but they are now expected to be converted into DRAM production lines to manufacture sixth-generation 1c DRAM using a 10-nanometer process. The chip giant confirmed this week that it has successfully developed the advanced technology, which will be used for the next-generation high bandwidth memory (HBM4) chips. Samsung Electronics Vice Chair Jun Young-hyun, who oversees the company's semiconductor business, traveled to the US last week to meet with Nvidia, signaling a renewed commitment to close the gap with competitors and secure new orders for the lucrative HBM chips. Phase 4 is expected to have a monthly capacity of 80,000 wafers, accounting for 40 percent of P4's total monthly capacity of 200,000 wafers based on 12-inch wafers. While Samsung did not confirm, there are reports that the chip giant is also considering restarting construction of what would be its fifth manufacturing plant at the Pyeongtaek Campus, known as P5. Groundwork for P5 began in 2023, but was halted early last year. P5 is expected to require an investment of more than 30 trillion won ($22 billion) and will be built as a complex fab capable of producing DRAM, NAND flash and foundry products. 'We are continuously reviewing various scenarios for resuming construction of our facilities,' a Samsung official said. SK hynix, a leading memory chip maker, is also preparing to expand its manufacturing volume for the coming years. Later this year, the chipmaker is expected to complete the construction of its new M15X plant in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, where it will start production of its fifth-generation 10nm-class DRAM chips for the next-generation HBM4 products. The facility is expected to have a capacity of around 90,000 wafers per month. SK hynix is also expanding investments to build a new back-end production facility, dubbed 'P&T 7,' on a site in Cheongju in a bid to strengthen its packaging capabilities to improve the performance and power efficiency of its advanced chips. The DRAM market is expected to show solid demand in the second half of the year, led by HBM chips, the critical DRAM components supporting AI processors. According to the Export-Import Bank of Korea, the global AI semiconductor market is projected to expand from $41.1 billion in 2022 to $133 billion by 2028.

Korean universities ramp up global recruitment as US tightens visa
As the United States tightens its grip on foreign students through stricter visa screenings and anti-DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies, South Korean universities are moving swiftly to attract top global students left in the lurch. Yonsei University said Thursday it established a new transfer system to accept international undergraduates year-round. It will implement a continuous undergraduate transfer admissions process for foreign nationals and overseas Koreans beginning in the first semester of 2026. The move is designed to allow students — particularly those forced to pause their US studies due to sudden visa or legal complications — to continue their academic careers in Korea without interruption. Unlike the traditional transfer process that opens only once a year in December, the new system allows second- and third-year students to apply and enroll throughout the year. Yonsei University is also working on arrangements with top American universities to allow students to temporarily study in Seoul while receiving credits toward their home institution's degree. The university is in advanced talks with at least one Ivy League institution regarding such agreements, according to the school official. Academic requirements will include document screening, essay writing, subject-specific exams, and interviews, mirroring traditional transfer exams, but with open enrollment throughout the year. The university is also considering setting tuition fees at levels comparable to US university programs. 'Having more students from top US institutions will not only enhance Yonsei's competitiveness but also elevate its standing in global university rankings,' a Yonsei official said. This institutional shift comes as global competition for American-educated graduates intensifies. The European Union has launched a 500 million-euro ($590 million) initiative to attract researchers, while France and Australia have introduced new hiring tracks and funding programs for US-based scholars. Seoul National University has also unveiled a set of measures aimed at capturing international talent. The school recently expanded eligibility for its international joint research support program, which previously served only graduate students under the Brain Korea 21 education initiative. Starting later this year, all SNU graduate students will be able to apply for funding to participate in overseas collaborative research, which covers expenses such as travel and living costs. The university has also been running a new fellowship program since March to recruit international postdoctoral researchers. Officials expect these programs to become a magnet for high-performing students and researchers exiting the US due to restrictive immigration policies. Korea University, meanwhile, is revamping its faculty recruitment strategy to draw in more accomplished foreign scholars. From the 2026 academic year, the school will introduce a "research-focused professor" track. Under this initiative, non-tenured faculty members, including international scholars, will receive increased incentives based on research output, particularly publications. Korea University finalized the necessary academic regulation changes on July 1. 'We plan to actively recruit researchers from elite institutions like Harvard to enhance our global research competitiveness,' a university official said. Kim Keon Hee probe kicks off with Sambu stock manipulation case
The special counsel team on Thursday searched the headquarters of Sambu Construction, a midsized South Korean builder, marking the first step in a probe into one of several allegations involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee. Thursday's raid by the special counsel team — led by Min Joong-ki — was conducted to look into allegations surrounding Kim including stock price manipulation. The raid came three weeks after the special counsel was appointed on June 12. Though the special counsel was tasked to probe a total of 16 allegations related to the former first lady, Min reportedly decided to prioritize the Sambu Construction case as it was considered an issue that was not adequately addressed in past Kim Keon Hee-themed investigations. The suspicions relate to a time when Sambu's stock price, which had been in the 1,000-won ($0.74) range, started to skyrocket within a three-month period in 2023. A message from Lee Jong-ho, the former CEO of Black Pearl Invest, sparked controversy in July, 2024. The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea argued that Sambu's trading volume and stock price surged after Lee posted a text message, saying 'Check Sambu tomorrow' on May 14. The party raised suspicions that Kim could be involved in this stock price manipulation, citing her personal ties with Lee, who was suspected of another stock price manipulation with Deutsch Motors Inc. with the former first lady. It also argued that then-presidential couple's visit to Ukraine to discuss the reconstruction project with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on May 16 coincided with the stock price increase. After the former Land Minister Won Hee-ryong and Sambu attended the Ukraine Recovery Conference on May 22, the stock price hit the price ceiling. It had skyrocketed to 5,500 won by July of the same year, when the presidential couple visited Ukraine once again for another summit. Sambu Construction's CEO, former and current owners were previously accused of inflating the stock price by creating a misleading impression that the company was set to take part in Ukraine reconstruction projects and then selling shares worth tens of billions of won. But the Financial Supervisory Service, which previously looked into the alleged Sambu stock manipulation case, did not file a complaint with the prosecution against the former first lady and Land Minister Won as no evidence of criminal offenses was found. Prior to Thursday's search and seizure operation, the special counsel issued a travel ban to prevent Kim from leaving the country. The special counsel announced that all suspicions against the former first lady are set to be probed by four individual assistant special prosecutors, who are tasked to reinvestigate Kim's Deutsch Motors and Sambu stock manipulation case, acceptance of a luxury bag, election interference scandal regarding a political broker Myung Tae-kyun and involvement in a route change on the Yangpyeong Expressway.
