MLB rumors: Mets, Dodgers, Tigers Paul Skenes Godfather trade offers concocted by ESPN
There's no reason to suspect the Pittsburgh Pirates are going to deal starting pitcher Paul Skenes at the trade deadline. But this is early July, which is peak trade rumor season, and that means we can all explore the possibility.

ESPN's David Schoenfield did just that on Tuesday, examining what it would take to send the Cy Young candidate to a trio of contenders: the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. But, of course, he first had to state the obvious:
'He's arguably the best starter in baseball, perhaps on his way to a Cy Young Award in his first full season,' Schoenfield wrote. 'He's one of the biggest names in the sport — despite playing for the lowly Pirates — and a player you can build not only a pitching staff around but a championship contender. He's under team control through 2029 and doesn't even become arbitration-eligible until 2027, so the Pirates are still years away from paying him a fair salary.'
Then Schoenfield acknowledged a harsh reality: Skenes is a pitcher and pitchers get hurt sometimes. It's possible that Skenes' trade value will never be higher than it is right now.

Los Angeles Dodgers: C/OF Dalton Rushing (No. 14), OF Josue De Paula (No. 17), IF Alex Freeland, RHP Emmet Sheehan, LHP Jackson Ferris
Detroit Tigers: OF Max Clark (No. 8), SS Kevin McGonigle (No. 11), RHP Jackson Jobe, IF Colt Keith, RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long
Of the three, Schoenfield pegs the Tigers as the most likely to get a deal done. The franchise has the perfect combination of farm system depth and payroll flexibility to make a big move for a pitcher who will command big money down the road.

In this theoretical trade, the Pirates would get two top-15 prospects in the sport to headline the package — and Detroit would still have plenty of talent left over. Pittsburgh would also get Jobe, a former elite prospect who just underwent Tommy John surgery.
The potential return for the Pirates could set them up for years to come, but potential does not guarantee anything. The Pirates have Skenes now and a chance to build around him. Prying him free will take a lot.

Manny Machado's massive Sunday leads Padres to series split in St. Louis
Just when Mike Shildt and the San Diego Padres needed it most, the best players on the team stepped up in a big way. Following back-to-back days of benches clearing in St. Louis between the Cardinals and Padres, cooler heads prevailed on Sunday. This time, the only fireworks were the bats of the San Diego Padres. The top three hitters in the Padres' lineup accounted for nine hits and scored five runs in the 9-2 win. Manny Machado was the big man on the field, as he had four hits and drove in three runs. Despite scoring nine runs, the Padres it just one home run, which came from Xander Bogaerts in the seventh inning. The win for the Padres kept them in the lead for the third and final wildcard in the National League. San Diego is now 57-49. St. Louis fell back to 54-53, and now 3.5 games out of the wildcard spot. Nick Saban shares humorous response to coaching return rumor
For the first time since the rumor was shared during SEC media days, former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has publicly commented on his potential interest in returning to coaching. In a recent television appearance on Fox News' Fox and Friends, Saban was asked in an interview the question as to if he would ever return to the sidelines again. Saban, in response, appeared to shut down speculation on a potential return, while also giving a humorous answer. "I never really ever had a thought about getting back into coaching, until two days ago Mrs. Terry said I had to run the sweeper in the entire downstairs," Saban said. "While running the sweeper, the thought occurred to me," When you were coaching, you had a heck of a lot better job than this. That is only time I considered it." "There is no opportunity that I know of right now, that would enhance me to go back to coaching." Saban also later added. Saban, who announced his retirement back in Jan. 2024, was the head coach at Alabama for 17 seasons from 2007-23, winning six national championships during that span. As the head coach at Alabama, Saban also compiled a 206-29 overall record, recorded 16 10-win seasons, and won nine SEC championships. Since announcing his retirement, Saban has remained around college football, most notably through his role on ESPN's weekly show "College GameDay." As to if Saban would ever return, the answer certainly appears unlikely in the near future.
