The Hire A Hubby hero turning handyman stereotypes on their head

Ditching his corporate suit for a toolbelt, Craig Burrowes built a million-dollar empire fixing leaky taps, rebuilding bathrooms, roofing mansions and hanging high-end artwork with the precision of a surgeon. He's the Auckland-based Hire A Hubby franchisee who's taken the handyman game and given it a proper glow-up.
From a one-man in a van operation in 2011 to owning the largest Hire A Hubby territory in New Zealand, Burrowes' story is one of grit, growth, and a knack for turning 'can't be done' into 'no worries, mate'.
With smarts gained from the corporate world and the knack he's always had for solving problems, Burrowes has made Hire A Hubby a roaring success, while becoming the guy you'd want on speed dial for any home or commercial fix-up.
The journey started when he had had enough of the corporate grind. 'I was restless, frustrated, and ready for a new challenge,' Burrowes says.
After years in senior management, he and his wife Sandy researched their options and bought into Hire A Hubby. Why a franchise? 'I didn't want to go into it only to remain a 'Joe's Handyman', stuck trimming trees and fixing fences,' Burrowes chuckles. The brand's systems, processes and support meant Burrowes could 'focus on getting the work, and then getting it done' rather than admin, he says.
While it began as a one-man, one-van setup, Burrowes always intended to grow, aiming to offer a premium service tackling minor repairs right up to major renovations. In less than a decade he'd snapped up the Hire a Hubby franchise in multiple territories across Auckland's Mt Eden, Westmere, Grey Lynn and North Shore. Today, he's got a team of six on the tools, a network of trusted subcontractors, and a commercial space in Hobsonville for staging big jobs and running operations.
In terms of turnover, Burrowes had built a multimillion-dollar business by 2022.
As for the secret sauce behind his success, he reckons it's a combination of smarts, hard work, and a key proposition: 'The customer has a problem; if you say 'no', the customer still has a problem, they've wasted their time calling, and they probably won't call next time.'
Burrowes says his team handles laying concrete, rebuilding conservatories, even sorting out pesky leaks that other tradies can't crack. Small things, sometimes. Big things, others: a recent highlight was a $350,000 re-roofing job on a 1920s prestige home in Grey Lynn, a project that kicked off FY24 with a bang.
Burrowes also boosted his quote-to-invoice rate from 84% in 2021 to 92% in 2023, and 79% of his business comes from repeat customers. Many have moved on from asking for quotes to simply getting Burrowes' Hire a Hubby crew in, knowing the quality and pricing are on point.
His team has earned strong customer feedback, with Natalie Gonthier from Village Rentals noting: 'Craig and his team are great – always on time, clean up, and handle everything from small jobs to massive ones.' Frank Rangi from Metro NZ Property Management labelled Burrowes' problem-solving skills 'one in a million'.
Then there's Bruce Sanderson, who raved about Burrowes' work on a spiral staircase and conservatory rebuild: 'I don't need to look for anyone else.' These reviews help explain the trophy case: Burrowes' team bagged seven awards, including the Big Business Award, at Hire A Hubby's recent Nelson conference.
In an effort to give back to the brand, Burrowes routinely 'rides along' with prospective new franchisees, assessing their suitability for the business. 'After all, the reputation of all of Hire a Hubby rests with every franchisee,' he points out, describing his involvement as 'enlightened self-interest' which contributes value to the franchise.
Asked if he has any advice for former tradies, those looking to carve their own path, or indeed fellow refugees looking to escape daily grinds and office politics, he says it doesn't have to be complicated. 'Follow the system, because it works,' he says. 'The jobs are out there; don't panic if it's slow at first. Be professional, communicate, and solve problems.'
Burrowes adds that there is room for specialisation within the model: if cabinets and kitchens are your thing, go for it. Landscaping, decking and retaining walls? Great. Plumbing and electrical? Have at it. 'One of my specialities is hanging fine art,' he says, 'But across my team, we've developed a wide range of capabilities.'
He says Hire A Hubby is about trust, value, and a willing attitude to understand challenges, and deliver the solutions. 'I often quip that we look after happy ladies and relieved husbands, because we take care of jobs that sometimes cause domestic friction,' he says with a smile.

In a statement published on Thursday, Associate Health Minister Casey Costello said the decision - to take effect from 1 September - would resolve a current court challenge by Mason Corporation, which owns the vape shop Shosha. "Cabinet was advised that taking this step was the best way to resolve the case," Costello said. "This decision means the proceedings, which relate to regulations brought in by the Labour government, can be withdrawn." Costello said the move was not expected to increase smoking or vaping rates. The announcement does not affect the coalition's move to ban disposable or single-use vaping devices. That ban kicked in from 17 June. The former Labour government announced the requirement for removable batteries in June 2023 as part of a suite of changes to vaping rules. At the time, then-Health Minister Ayesha Verrall said the move would make the devices safer. The coalition later delayed the regulations from coming into effect until October 2024 "to ensure sufficient availability of appropriate reusable vaping products to continue to support people to quit smoking". Photo: 123RF RNZ last year revealed that Philip Morris had pulled its IQOS [ heated tobacco product (HTPs) from the shelves] due to the regulations around removable batteries. That proved to be a major roadblock to the government's controversial trial of halving excise tax on HTPs to encourage their use as a smoking cessation tool. Philip Morris has since released a new compliant IQOS product with a removeable battery. Documents showed Costello had tried to delay the battery regulations for two years, but Cabinet agreed only to a six-month delay from the original date of 21 March. The minister's support for HTPs as a less harmful alternative to smoking provoked outrage from the opposition parties and health experts who labelled it a "dangerous and radical experiment". Treasury identified a long list of concerns about the proposal at the time, but Costello said she relied on "independent advice" to the contrary .

Consumer watchdog warns Fijians about Auckland-based TikTokker's money-making scheme

Photo: Screengrab / TikTok/@ Fiji's consumer watchdog is warning Fijians to stay away from a TikTok "business opportunity" run out of Auckland. The Consumer Council of Fiji (CCF) issued a warning on 11 July about a series of viral TikToks that encourage viewers to pay upfront "joining fees" with promises of instant earnings. The TikToker has amassed tens of thousands of views on videos promoting "LiveGood", a multi-level marketing (MLM) company based in Florida that sells nutrition supplements. "An individual named Ricky Nair LG, reportedly based in New Zealand, is actively promoting this scheme in Fiji. It promises high returns through 'matrix spillover' and encourages people to pay a US$49.95 joining fee and a monthly US$9.95 subscription." "It resembles a pyramid scheme, where earnings are based solely on recruiting others. It promises unrealistic weekly payments of up to $1000 for simply signing others up." Council CEO Seema Shandil told RNZ Pacific that they want to prevent Fijians from falling for online scams before too much money is lost. "We are trying to raise [awareness]...we have experienced it, and we know that eventually this is going to fall apart and people are going to lose heaps." LiveGood's MLM structure involves sellers who improve their ranking by selling products, getting customers to pay for a US$9.95 a month membership, and by recruiting, or "sponsoring", more sellers. The sellers earn a 2.5 percent commission on products sold, passing the rest of their revenue up to their sponsor, who would in turn pay a share up to theirs, and so on. In his videos, Nair often refers to "matrix spillover" as a means of earning income through Livegood. The "matrix" refers to a hierarchical structure of sellers, with their sponsors above them. Members may then recruit their own, or on their downline, that they did not personally recruit. Thus, the top seller is generating income without having to do anything. "How many he has recruited, I don't know, but he's using all these techniques to lure the vulnerable," Shandil said. While there are sellers based in New Zealand, it is unclear how popular LiveGood is among Kiwis. Shandil said that the fact NZ-based sellers are appealing to Fijians is a major red flag. "They are people sitting in New Zealand, and they are aggressively marketing it to the people of Fiji. So why do you think that doing that?" Auckland-based TikTokker Ricky Nair Photo: Screengrab / TikTok/@ When RNZ Pacific contacted Nair, he denied any wrongdoing. "The Consumer Council [of Fiji] hasn't got a clue," he said. Nair said that there are "heaps" of sellers in New Zealand, most using TikTok and Facebook to sell worldwide. "I'm just sending the referrals. If they want, they join. If they don't want, they don't join." He said that he receives a commission for every member that he refers, and that he has 47 members in his downline, with 21 from Fiji. He said he does not profit from their sales. But Nair has publicly boasted his "Gold ranking", which, according to LiveGood rules means he has at least 100 people, and at most 499 people, below him on his "enroller tree". Despite posting that new members could make "$1000 a week" if they sign up under him, Nair said they have to work for it by recruiting new members themselves. "Everybody are doing their own way of marketing, right? I'm just posting that. But if people gonna contact me, then I gonna explain them how it gonna work (sic)." According to [ Scam Detector], the TikTokker's storefront website has a score of 45.8/100, meaning it has a low-to-medium trust score, and is likely a scam. "This website has a pretty low score, which means caution is advised," it states. The New Zealand Commerce Commission says that it is aware of LiveGood's presence in New Zealand, and they are keeping a close watch. The Commission's general manager of competition, fair trading and credit Vanessa Horne said it received two enquiries about the multi-level marketer (MLM) in 2023. "While MLMs are not prohibited under the Fair Trading Act, businesses and individuals operating MLMs could still breach the Act if they make misleading or false claims about either the benefits of signing up to the MLM scheme and/or the goods or services the MLM sells." Horne said that an essential element of a pyramid scheme is that the return depends on the continued recruitment of new members, not product sales. Another is that they offer financial return based on recruitment fees. "Some promoters of pyramid schemes do try and make their schemes sound lawful. Consumers should be careful to ensure that a scheme is genuinely a multi-level marketing scheme, and not an illegal pyramid selling scheme before becoming involved with it." "The Commission encourages anyone who believes a business has breached the Fair Trading Act or one of the other laws we enforce, to report it, using the 'report a concern' form on our website ."

The company - founded by Michelle Dickinson and her husband Joe Davis - was placed into liquidation last November. Dickinson told RNZ at the time that a tough business environment was behind the decision. Government funding had also been cut. It had provided science live shows, education and STEM kits to children for eight years. Dickinson told Nine to Noon last November that revenue sources had "dried up" . The biggest set back was the cut to MBIE's $1.6 million Curious Minds funding, which supported community science programmes. Nanogirl also received funding from other government departments, including the Ministry of Education and MFAT which had been undertaking science curriculum work in the Pacific. Photo: RNZ Liquidator Digby Noyce, from RES Corporate Services, said in his second report that all employment contracts were terminated when he was appointed, but some staff were contracted to perform the remaining birthday party bookings. The report said the business had a cash balance of $11,769 and the equipment and stock had no realisable value. "We have received a preferential creditor claim from Inland Revenue for unpaid GST and employer activities taxes amounting to $267,028.42. "Our present view, based on information received to date, is that it is uncertain whether a distribution will be available for preferential creditors, however recovery actions through insolvent transactions or other remedies may bring in additional funds, although it is still too early to express a view on such matters." Noyce had received claims from unsecured creditors amounting to $191,680. But he said, based on information to date, it was unlikely that a distribution would be made to those creditors.
