Iowa women's basketball continues quirky team tradition
During her rounds with the local media, Gyamfi was asked if she had any unique veteran jokes or pranks she performs with the team after being around the program for the last three seasons.
The 6-foot-1 forward admitted to being the torchbearer of a long-standing locker room tradition, which she inherited from former Hawkeyes guard Kate Martin after Martin left the program following the 2023-24 season.
According to Gyamfi, this tradition involves the random placement of fake cockroaches in teammates' locker room stalls, personal belongings (such as backpacks and shoes) and even throwing them following workouts.
"Okay, so I have fake cockroaches in my locker. They have been passed down for many years. So Kate had them when I got here, and I took them from Kate when she left. So that's my go-to prank. Cockroach in your shoe.
"If you bring a backpack in, you might find a couple of fake cockroaches in there. Or sometimes, when everyone's really tired after weights or something, I'll just grab one and throw it and see if anyone notices. It's really funny," Gyamfi said.
When asked how long the tradition has been practiced within the Hawkeyes' locker room, Gyamfi was unsure, but said it had been occurring for around eight years.
"Oh my god. Well, probably like eight years. I don't know. But I need to buy more," Gyamfi said.
In a follow-up question on whether she believes Martin started the odd tradition, she immediately agreed and said that her locker currently has a jar of fake cockroaches waiting to be used.
"I believe so," Gyamfi answered. "So if you ever get a tour of the locker room and open my locker, you will see a mason jar of fake cockroaches."
While the tradition may cause some fans' skin to crawl, it has certainly created a lively locker room atmosphere for the Hawkeyes over time.
And, in big-time collegiate athletics, whatever can help lighten the mood at times is a tradition worth carrying on.

Aggie Football Alum Terrence Murphy hooks ownership role in SFC's Third Coast Renegades
Life after sports can be challenging for many athletes, especially when the game they devoted their lives to is no longer part of their daily routine. This is even more pronounced for professionals whose careers end abruptly due to injuries. There are countless cautionary tales of players struggling post-retirement, many of whom never planned for what came next or made poor financial decisions. That's why it's essential for athletes to seize opportunities to learn and build an identity beyond their sport. Terrence Murphy—former Texas A&M standout and Green Bay Packer—has done exactly that over the past two decades. Murphy was selected in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft, but his promising career was cut short by a neck injury, forcing him to retire in 2007. Yet he was far from lost—he had already begun investing in real estate, laying a foundation for long-term success. Over the next 20 years, Murphy expanded his portfolio to include more than 100 companies across various sectors, including real estate, construction services, technology, venture capital, and sports. Beyond his regular youth camp in Bryan–College Station, Murphy has embraced the growing sport of pickleball, contributing as both an owner and media creator. His most recent move? Joining the ownership group of the Third Coast Renegades Angling Club, part of the Sport Fishing Championship (SFC). Founded in 2021, the SFC is a competitive sport fishing league representing 16 regions across North America. When asked what drew him to the Third Coast Renegades and the SFC, Murphy shared: "Fishing is about precision, patience, and purpose: the same values that drive successful teams and businesses. Through Third Coast Renegades AC, we're building something bigger than sport; we're creating legacy, community, and opportunity.' 'SFC is pioneering something new, and I'm proud to be part of it. And what also attracted me to SFC was the innovative team structure—they've built something truly unique by creating the camaraderie with teams and fans." Murphy's story serves as a powerful example for former athletes seeking purpose beyond the game. While not everyone will build an empire like his, they can discover something meaningful and fulfilling. Terrence Murphy has always been a go-getter, and it's exciting to imagine what he'll accomplish over the next 20 years. Notre Dame coach Mike Mickens is coming in for high praise
The Fighting Irish secondary is in good hands Mike Mickens is earning high praise for his recruiting skills. The Notre Dame defensive backs coach is also getting praise for his coaching skills. Combine the secondary's play in 2024 and the Fighting Irish recruiting haul from this offseason, it's clear to see why. Mickens is seen as being responsible for bringing DB recruits Joey O'Brien, Khary Adams, Ayden Pouncey, Chaston Smith and Nick Reddish. We all know how dominant the 2024 secondary was, even after Benjamin Morrison got hurt. What Xavier Watts, Leonard Moore and Christian Gray did en route to the national title game was a sight to behold. Mickens will be a coach to watch in 2025.
