Tesla owner wants harsher charges after vandal caught on video scratching car with box cutter
"It's frustrating. I don't know what he was thinking!" said James Lipari, whose Model 3 Performance Tesla was vandalized just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday on Northeast 59th Street.
Lipari had parked one street away from a nearby event when his Tesla's Sentry Pro app sent him a push notification.
"I started a free trial of an app called Sentry Pro, which gives you a push notification to your device if Sentry is activated," Lipari said.
Video from the vehicle's security system shows a man approaching, pulling out what appears to be a box cutter, and dragging it across the car's front end twice.
"The hood alone would cost around $1,200," Lipari said. After bringing the car to Tesla on Tuesday, he was told the repair cost could be even higher.
"He told me normally what they do is they'll repair not only the hood where it's damaged, but also the two other panels here, to kind of blend all the colors in. That's what makes it more costly."
The video also shows the man vandalizing a nearby truck in the same way.
"It just makes me think he's done this before," Lipari said.
Lipari filed a police report. So far, the incident is classified as criminal mischief under $1,000, but he wants it upgraded to a third-degree felony.
"It's important that people are aware that this gentleman is walking around not only with a box cutter in his pocket but also that he's just randomly targeting vehicles — and who knows what else," Lipari said.
The Miami Police Department is investigating.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).

Anti-Elon Musk protesters are coming for Tesla's new diner
Tesla just opened a retro diner in Los Angeles, so it was only a matter of time before anti-Elon Musk protesters caught wind. The long-awaited retrofuturistic diner, complete with giant outdoor screens for drive-in movies, dozens of Supercharger stalls, and an Optimus robot serving popcorn, opened to huge lines in West Hollywood on July 21st. Protesters are planning on demonstrating outside the newly opened diner on July 26th, according to the Action Network website, which has served as a repository for the so-called Tesla Takedown movement. '[Elon Musk] wants to celebrate his reign of terror in OUR CITY, Occupied Los Angeles, with a cheesy Tesla-branded diner exclusively for his legion of conmen stock-pumpers and MLM influencer tryhards?' the website reads. 'WE SAY HELL NO.' '[Elon Musk] wants to celebrate his reign of terror in OUR CITY, Occupied Los Angeles, with a cheesy Tesla-branded diner exclusively for his legion of conmen stock-pumpers and MLM influencer tryhards?' Since early February of this year, Tesla has been the target of protesters opposed to Musk's involvement with the Trump administration. As Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) sought to eliminate humanitarian aid programs and fire tens of thousands of government workers, demonstrators have expressed their rage by picketing outside Tesla showrooms and demanding Tesla owners sell their vehicles. Others have taken things further, defacing Tesla vehicles with anti-Musk slogans, smashing windows, and even setting some Tesla property on fire. Musk's allies in the Trump administration are threatening to prosecute anyone caught defacing Tesla vehicles by classifying the acts as 'domestic terrorism.' Musk officially stepped back from DOGE in May, although he claims that he will remain involved with the group in some capacity. The following month, Musk and President Donald Trump had a public falling out, with the two engaged in a war of words. Trump has threatened to deport Musk, while Musk has accused the president of being on Jeffrey Epstein's alleged client list. Despite all the drama, anti-Musk protesters are trying to keep up the energy. Joel Lava, who has been helping lead the Tesla Takedown protests in Los Angeles, said he expects a large crowd outside the diner this Saturday. 'It's in West Hollywood,' Lava told The Verge. 'I think it's safe to say that Elon Musk is not a popular figure in West Hollywood. So I don't think it's going to be hard to protest it.' 'I think it's safe to say that Elon Musk is not a popular figure in West Hollywood.' While the weekly crowds may have diminished slightly from their peak in the spring, and while Musk may have distanced himself from the Trump administration, the Tesla Takedown movement hasn't given up. Lava said that dozens of people still show up every week to protest outside of Tesla locations in LA, buoyed by news of Tesla's worsening earnings statement and falling sales. He also cited recent reports of food that was supposed to ship out with USAID being left to rot in warehouses thanks to DOGE's funding cuts. And the news that Musk may start his own political party has further motivated the activists to keep up their presence, Lava said. 'Yes, our numbers have dwindled, but they have stayed strong,' he said. 'We've already built a community, [and] people will show up.' Lava said the tactics will be similar to those used in protests outside of Tesla dealerships and charging stations: raising awareness about Musk's efforts to decimate humanitarian aid and destroy the federal government. 'I think our simple message is Tesla funds fascism,' Lava said. 'You're going into this cafe, and you're giving a $300 billion man your own money to help destroy the fabric of our country. That's why we don't want you buying Tesla. And that's why you shouldn't go into this cafe.' Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. Authorities release more information on fiery Poway crash that killed five
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities Tuesday evening released more information on a fiery crash in Poway that left five people dead Friday afternoon. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office reports three vehicles were involved in the deadly crash that happened at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 18, on State Route 67, north of Iron Mountain Drive and east of the city of Poway. Five people die in crash near Poway that sparked a brush fire The sheriff's department reports a Chevy Silverado pickup truck was traveling north when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver crossed into oncoming traffic at a high-rate of speed. The pickup truck collided head-on with a white Honda Civic with one person inside that was heading south on SR-67, while a Toyota Tacoma with three people inside was unable to stop and collided with the Honda Civic, the sheriff's department reports. Family mourns father and son lost in Poway crash that killed 5 The force of the collision sent one vehicle down a ravine and sparked a small brush fire along the highway that was quickly doused by firefighters but heavily damaged the vehicles. The sheriff's department reports all five people in the three vehicles died at the scene. Detectives are investigating what caused the pickup truck to veer into oncoming traffic and are reviewing video they received from a passing Tesla that shows the pickup truck hit the other vehicles head-on in the opposite lanes of traffic. While the family has since identified two of the victims— Marcial Rivera, 59 and his son, Emmanuel Rivera, 32 — and has set up a GoFundMe and is planning a Sunday fundraiser, the names of the other three victims have yet to be released by authorities.
