Norman Powell said playing for Heat was 'childhood dream' and dishes on the trade to Miami
▪ He said he was surprised by the trade:
'I didn't know what to think at first. It has been a crazy last couple of weeks, from talking to [Clippers general manager] Lawrence Frank at my exit meeting and what they were telling me. It was something I knew was a possibility; them saying teams were interested in me. [But the Clippers] made it sound like there wasn't a high possibility of it happening and we would figure out an extension.'
He was in Europe earlier this week and 'when I got the call and said I was traded, it was a shock. I had a career year' and expected an extension from the Clippers.
'Hearing it was Miami, I was really excited.'
Powell said 'I've had a couple guys say amazing things about the organization. Thinking back to my childhood, being a big fan of Dwyane Wade. Playing for Heat was a childhood dream. Full circle moment for me.'
▪ He said he fits the Heat culture because 'I'm extremely hard working. Going to Miami -- I fit the culture perfectly, putting in extra work, the late nights, early mornings. That's who I am to the T. I've hung my hat on making my weaknesses my strengths and my strengths even better.'
▪ He said of the Heat: 'They see me as a winning piece and that requires me to sacrifice my game.'
▪ What does he see himself as? 'I see myself as a plug guy... I've always seen myself as a go-to guy who can help a team win. I don't have a big ego of 'I have to be the main guy.'
'I've not been shy to say I can be a starter, an All Star if given the opportunity. This year I showcased that, being in the top 10 of All Star' voting at guard in the Western Conference.
'I'm a versatile player who can play multiple roles and excel in any role. Being able to attack the paint will open up opportunities for others. Me and Bam [Adebayo] in the pick and roll can take pressure off those guys. Being able to initiate plays and also finish plays on the second side of the offense.'
▪ On his defense: 'I know people have said how that's taken a step back since my Toronto days. I'm looking forward to putting my stamp on that.'
▪ On the team he's joining: 'Having conversations with Bam [in the past], I like what they're building. I like the culture. They fight for wins, they're scrappy,.They're competitive. That's what I like. Bam can play multiple positions and attack a multitude of ways. Really athletic.
'Tyler Herro is great off the ball, on the ball, scoring, facilitating. He did a great job this year figuring out when to score, when to be aggressive... I can make things easy for Tyler. He was the focal point last year.... The way Davion Mitchell guards, is aggressive, can get downhill as well.'
▪ Does Powell consider himself an underrated player? 'I think I am... People don't really see what I can bring to the table. Last year was the first full year of people being able to say this guy is really good and can be a go to guy every night.'
▪He spoke to Pat Riley on Wednesday. What feedback has he received?
'Everybody is super excited. They mentioned how they tried to get me for several years now. Always good to have that initial energy and excitement that they want you and had their eye on you for a long time and see how you can fit into the team and make an impact with my scoring and being dynamic and being able to do a bunch of different things.
'It's always good hearing that going into a situation where they've wanted you.
'Pat likes my little floater I've developed over the years. Being able to work on both sides of the floor, me one side, Tyler on the other' is an exciting possibility.

Inter Miami awaiting word if Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba will be suspended for missing 2025 MLS All-Star Game
MLS has yet to officially announce whether Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba will be available for Inter Miami's match Saturday night when they host FC Cincinnati. The two could be subject to a one-game suspension after they missed the 2025 MLS All-Star Game this week. While Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters the team had not heard from the league and are training as if Messi and Alba will play, Soccerwise's Tom Bogert reports that MLS has not made an official decision on their status. MLS rules state that if a player pulls out of the All-Star Game without an approved medical reason they are subject to a one-game suspension. According to ESPN's Lizzy Becherano, league officials and Inter Miami representatives held talks this week about whether both players would be available for the Cincinnati game. "Well, Messi showed normal fatigue from the number of games and minutes he's been playing," Mascherano said, via ESPN. "Look, players always have discomfort, especially when they play every three days. But luckily, he is returning today. Let's hope he can train alongside the group so we can count on both of them for tomorrow's game. We haven't received any [sanction.]" The league has enforced this policy before after former LA Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimović was suspended one game when he missed the 2018 All-Star Game against Serie A side Juventus. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] A team of MLS All-Stars beat a team of All-Stars from Mexico's Liga MX 3-1 in in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday night. When the league revealed the final roster for the game, Messi and Alba were not included. On Friday, Mascherano noted Inter Miami's busy schedule of late and why Messi and Alba needed the time away. "What I think is that if they want to do this type of event, it's great to do it, and the truth is that it's great for the league," Mascherano said. "There shouldn't be a date in the schedule. It's crazy. We've been playing four of the last five games away. We've been playing four away. We've been playing practically every three days. "Stop for the weekend, the All-Star Gam is played on the weekend, and we come back because after Wednesday, today, 48 hours after having played, there are teams that are going to play today, and it's not enough rest for the players either. So, the first thing we have to think about is that football belongs to the players. And if football belongs to the players, without players, it doesn't exist." Messi missed last year's All-Star Game after he suffered an ankle injury representing Argentina at Copa América. Speculation grew that the two Inter Miami stars would not play in this year's event when they both missed Monday's training session. Following an injury-filled 2024 season, the 38-year-old Messi has played every minute of Inter Miami's last 19 games. The Herons are 12-4-5 and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference through 21 games. Both players were in the Inter Miami lineup during Saturday's 5-1 win over New York Red Bulls. Alba, who was subbed out in the second half with an injury, scored the team's first goal and Messi added two in the second half. It remains to be how involved Messi and Alba will be involved against Cincinnati. Both trained on Friday morning and the team will then have three days off before beginning Phase One of Leagues Cup play on Wednesday against Liga MX side Atlas F.C.

As fall practice looms, Cristobal stresses ‘it's Miami versus Miami' until season starts
Mario Cristobal has seen the Miami Hurricanes' strides since he took over as head coach. ▪ Year 1, 2022: From Cristobal's perspective, the roster was 'not really built to take on Power 4 football.' They went 5-7. The seven losses were by an average of 21.6 points, including 45-3 to FSU, 40-10 to Clemson and 42-16 to Pittsburgh. 'Those were some lopsided games,' Cristobal said, 'and those were tough.' ▪ Year 2, 2023: Incremental steps were made. Miami swept its nonconference slate but only went 3-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference action and lost its bowl game to go 7-5. Only one loss by was more than 10 points. 'Everything was competitive,' Cristobal said, 'and we won a couple more.' ▪ Year 3, 2024: Another noticeable step forward. Miami, led by the best offense in the country, started a perfect 9-0 and was in heavy talks about being a College Football Playoff contender before things unraveled. Miami lost two of its final three regular-season games to miss out on both the ACC Championship Game and a spot in the 12-team playoff field. A bowl game loss followed to put a disappointing end to a 10-3 season. 'We had a chance to win every single game, but we didn't,' Cristobal said. 'The bottom line is we didn't get it done.' And that sets the stage for Year 4, with expectations once again high and Cristobal hoping the Hurricanes get to the point where they, in his words, 'can play for championships and win championships.' That will start Thursday when the Hurricanes begin their fall practice slate a month ahead of their marquee season opener against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Aug. 31 at Hard Rock Stadium. But Cristobal isn't thinking about Notre Dame yet. Or at least he's not talking about it out loud. He has respect for his opponent — and the history between the Hurricanes and Fighting Irish runs deep — but Cristobal knows his focus for the next month has to be on what's inside his building. The priority lies in making sure the Hurricanes are ready for the task ahead, and that requires them to identify everything they need to do to put themselves on a path to success. 'It's Miami versus Miami until it's Miami versus somebody else,' Cristobal said. Added senior linebacker Wesley Bissainthe: 'We're focusing on fall camp, tying to build our team's identity. The Notre Dame game will come eventually, but right now, we've got to find ourselves and find what we're good at.' They have a lot to build on. While 2024 ended in disappointing fashion, it was still the Hurricanes' first 10-win season since 2017. That said, UM's performance slipping down the stretch has been a trend during the Cristobal era. In 2022, Miami lost three of its final four games. In 2023, Miami lost four of its final five games. And in 2024, Miami lost three of its final four games. That will need to be remedied if Miami wants to succeed in 2025. 'Without a doubt, finishing is a mentality,' Cristobal said. 'Finishing is a work ethic that comes with the off-season. We've always invested a ton of effort in those areas, and we've invested even more this off-season, and it will be a big part of training camp, as well.' Training camp will be here before they know it. So, too, will the season. 'Last season is in the past,' Bissainthe said. 'We've got our eyes on 2025, just looking forward to winning and taking every game one game at a time. We're not looking in the past. We're looking forward.'
