Researchers uncover major missed opportunity in country's eating habits: 'We may need more targeted messaging'
A team from The Rowett Institute at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland found that oily fish caught and farmed in U.K. waters could provide 73% of the daily recommended intake of omega-3 and 46% of vitamin B12. According to a university news release, most of this fish — salmon, herring, and mackerel — is sold abroad while local residents tend to eat imported prawn, cod, salmon, and tuna.
In addition to the dietary benefits of eating nutrient-packed local fish, the scientists also called out potential cost savings for consumers.

"The U.K. is a large producer of herring and mackerel, which are relatively cheap for consumers to buy, and these species could significantly contribute to the provision of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B12 and D in the U.K. population," the paper said.
Eating local food also boasts climate benefits, as it reduces transportation-related pollution. The shipping industry accounts for about 3% of planet-warming emissions, according to Transport & Environment.
Plus, boosting the amount of local fish consumed by Britons can help with the overheating of our planet in another way. People in the U.K. only eat about half of the recommended dietary intake of fish. Meanwhile, the farming of fish contributes less to the overheating of our planet, on average, than that of other animal proteins, according to Oceana. However, the organization notes that different types of fish have different impacts, and small schooling species such as anchovies and herring are the most sustainable options.
By reducing our planet-warming pollution, we can help safeguard our food supply across the board. For instance, olive oil prices have soared to new highs as extreme weather puts a strain on the industry. And warming waters in Fano, a coastal town in Italy, are affecting the livelihoods of local fishermen.
"Dietary recommendations for fish consumption have not been particularly effective in increasing fish intake in the U.K.," said Baukje de Roos, a professor at The Rowett Institute. "We may need more targeted messaging on, and a better understanding of, how much fish we need, and which fish we should eat."

Your Food Packaging Is Shedding Microplastics Into Every Meal, Study Reveals
Simply using your food packaging in the manner it's supposed to be used is enough to contaminate your comestibles with a sprinkling of microplastics. A painstaking review of 103 scientific studies on microplastic food contamination found actions as simple as opening a plastic drink bottle or using a plastic chopping board can shave off tiny particles of common polymers. Even glass bottles that use a plastic gasket, plastic-lined pizza boxes, plastic-lined disposable coffee cups, plastic tea bags, plastic wrappings, and microwaveable plastic containers shed microplastic like a Persian cat sheds fur in spring. The problem, a team led by biologist Lisa Zimmermann of the non-profit Food Packaging Forum in Switzerland says, is ubiquitous. Related: Microplastics Could Accumulate in Our Brains More Than in Kidneys And Livers "This is the first systematic evidence of how normal and intended use of foodstuffs packaged in plastics can be contaminated with micro- and nanoplastics," Zimmermann told CNN. "We found food packaging is actually a direct source of the micro- and nanoplastics measured in food." The more scientists look into micro- and nanoplastics, or MNPs, the more we see just how widespread they have become. These are tiny pieces of material, too small to see, released by a variety of polymers as they're used or break up in the environment. Plastic is ubiquitous in our modern society, providing a cheap, easily manufactured solution to everything from storage to clothing to furnishings. In recent decades it has become clear its resistance to degrading doesn't mean it is impervious to crumbling into smaller fragments, which easily filter through ecosystems. Studies have found microplastics throughout the human body, including placentas. It's been found in every major organ in mice, including their fetuses. What makes this even more worrying is that we just have very little idea about the health impacts, although it's not looking promising: A study last year found that cardiac and stroke patients with a high concentration of microplastics in their carotid artery plaque had a significantly elevated risk of death. Zimmermann and her colleagues examined 103 studies that have investigated the presence of plastic particles in food and food simulants. From these studies, they extracted 600 entries about food contact articles, of which 96 percent reported the presence of MNPs. Those entries were also compiled into a searchable and filterable dashboard that anyone can access, allowing users to home in on different types of food contact articles, from packaging to baby bottles, as well as different types of plastic. Related: Glass Bottles Actually Contain More Microplastics, Scientists Find Of particular note, the researchers found, is that multiple studies found that for some reusable plastic items, such as melamine bowls, the amount of microplastics shed increased with each wash. This suggests that repeated heating and abrasion increases the rate at which these items degrade. The researchers also note that ultra-processed food contains more microplastic than minimally processed food. The reason for this is simple: more processing steps mean greater exposure to plastic food-processing equipment, resulting in more MNPs in the final product. Their findings, the researchers say, strongly indicate that not only is a lot more research warranted, but also that more needs to be done to minimize the use of plastics in food packaging and preparation. "Our study shows that under intended or foreseeable conditions of use, plastic food contact articles can release MNPs into foodstuffs," they write in their paper. "The contribution of plastic food contact articles to human MNP exposure is currently unclear and warrants further investigation. Further research is also necessary to establish human health impacts associated with MNP exposures, but a precautionary approach aimed at limiting human exposure to MNPs, including from food contact articles, is prudent." Endangered turtles share this Mexican beach with SpaceX rocket debris. The company says there's no risk of harm
The debris arrives in the rockets' wake: melted plastics, aluminum and pieces of blue adhesive. It all ends up stranded on the sands of Bagdad beach in northern Tamaulipas, Mexico, home to an endangered species of sea turtle. Just across the border lies Starbase, SpaceX's launchpad and company town. Since November, Conibio Global, a small non-governmental organization, has taken on a daunting task: cleaning up trash from SpaceX, one of the most powerful companies in the world. Jesús Elías Ibarra, founder of Conibio Global, told CNN that in November 2024, he witnessed one of SpaceX's launches and saw one of the rocket boosters fall into the Gulf of Mexico. That time, Ibarra says people arrived in at least three helicopters and more than 10 boats just a few hours later to clean up. CNN reached out to SpaceX to ask if they were responsible for this cleanup. In May, however, there was another launch, with more debris. This time, the activist claims, millions of particles ended up contaminating the area on the Mexican side. Ibarra said that a few days later, the organization collected more than a ton of waste in an area of 500 meters. 'In half a kilometer out of the 40 kilometers of shoreline, we already collected one ton (of trash),' added Ibarra. 'We are a very small group, it's impossible to clean everything.' Ibarra said that Conibio Global handed the debris to the Mexican government's environmental protection agency PROFEPA. In response to inquiries from CNN, SpaceX referred to what they published on social media site X on June 26, where they claim to have offered resources and support for cleanup efforts. The company claimed that they have also requested local and federal assistance from the Mexican government for debris recovery. Under the Outer Space Treaty, SpaceX is entitled to have its debris returned. The statement added that the company had performed tests that they claim confirm that there are no chemical, biological or toxicological risks associated with the flotsam and jetsam of a typical SpaceX launch. CNN contacted the authorities of Tamaulipas and the Presidency of Mexico about SpaceX's offer and is awaiting a response. Ibarra said that Conibio Global has not had any contact with the company. Marlon Sorge, executive director of The Aerospace Corporation's Center for Orbital and Reentry Debris Studies (CORDS), told CNN in an email that it's best not to touch space debris if found. 'Although a lot of debris is not hazardous, spaceflight-related vehicles can contain hazardous chemicals and materials,' Sorge wrote. 'Be aware that it is not worth the risk to touch a piece of debris, and it could interfere with important investigations.' Some of the objects found during cleanup operations, Ibarra said, are solid and spongy plastics, a type of rubber with a consistency similar to cork, aluminum with SpaceX labels, pieces of plastic bubble wrap, steel tubes, and pieces of a blue-colored adhesive. Some of this trash, Ibarra predicted, could end up being ingested by Kemp's ridley turtles, an endangered species of sea turtle that inhabits the area. On its website, SpaceX says it is committed to minimizing the impact and improving the environment whenever possible, highlighting agreements with various US agencies and the Texas government. After the recent explosion of a SpaceX rocket on June 19, the NGO reported that some large fragments appeared in Mexican territory the next morning. It stated that several officials from the Mexican government got in touch so that they could be informed of the situation. Conibio follows SpaceX's social media announcements to know when there will be launches and goes to the sites to collect evidence of debris they know will fall. He says this happens in the northern area of Bagdad Beach and on a parcel of communal farming land in nearby Matamoros. Following persistent public complaints, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke out at her daily conference on June 25. Sheinbaum said that her government had found that there is indeed pollution and that the impact of rocket launches in general will be reviewed in order to take action 'within the framework of international laws,' including possible legal actions. Ibarra, who is also a veterinarian and director of the Marine Turtle Program at Conibio Global, said that he believes the vibrations generated by the rockets compact the sand where there are turtle nests and prevent them from emerging. He said that at least 300 hatchlings have died in the compacted nests. 'There is vegetation that the last explosion burned, the entire edge of the Rio Bravo, and the pipes broke many trees, which fell near a small population of people,' said Ibarra. He added that in several border cities between Tamaulipas and Texas it was reported that there was minor damage to houses due to the vibrations from the rockets. A team of environmental officials and personnel from the Mexican Navy Secretariat went to collect the waste Conibio collected last weekend, and during the visit, Ibarra recounted, they found a tank approximately 4 meters long and a stainless steel pipe weighing about 5 kg. Dealing with cleaning up the waste has cost the NGO more than US$26,000 in operating expenses and beach monitoring due to vehicle fuel they use and laborers' wages, as well as cleaning materials, the organization claims. Ibarra noted that the Mexican government has collaborated with them since they became aware of the situation, especially since it involves a foreign company. He claimed that during one of the visits they were 'harassed' by SpaceX drones that were recording them. SpaceX did not respond to CNN's request for comment on Ibarra's allegation. CNN has also contacted the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the Government of Tamaulipas for comments on Ibarra's statements. In SpaceX's statement on social media, the company said that the debris is its property and that its recovery attempts have been hindered by individuals who had 'trespassed' on private property without authorization. CNN has asked SpaceX and the Government of Tamaulipas about what private property the company is referring to. The Government of Tamaulipas has always expressed that it wants a collaborative relationship with SpaceX. Governor Américo Villarreal visited Starbase in November 2024. While the bigger rocket pieces have been removed, Ibarra says the trash remains a major problem at Bagdad Beach. 'The debris is still there,' Ibarra said. 'It's no longer as visible as in the photos because the tides have been burying it, but it's there, and it has to be removed sooner or later.' Scientists Are Finding Microplastics Almost Everywhere In The Body. How Bad Is That, Really?

Scientists are even finding microplastics, which are small bits of plastic under five millimeters long, in over half of human organ systems. That may sound scary, but scientists are still figuring out exactly what their presence means—and if they're truly harmful for our long-term health. The good news? 'I don't think we can say yet that [microplastics] are everywhere' because it's such a new area of research, and they're hard to measure, says Kjersti Aagaard, MD, PhD, the medical director of HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division and lead clinician at Texas Maternal Fetal Medicine. Plus, some of the spots where they have been detected—like in human stools and urine—show that microplastics can be cleared from the body, meaning they might not stick around in the long run anyway. Meet the experts: Kjersti Aagaard, MD, PhD, is the medical director of HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division and lead clinician at Texas Maternal Fetal Medicine. Stephanie Wright, PhD, is a senior lecturer in environmental toxicology at Imperial College London. Eliseo Castillo, PhD, is an associate professor and director of gastroenterology research at the University of New Mexico. Ahead, experts explain how microplastics get into our bodies, how they may affect us, and what this all really means for our health. Microplastics get into your body through food, water, and air, says Stephanie Wright, PhD, a senior lecturer in environmental toxicology at Imperial College London. Given the amount of air humans breathe every day—over 2,000 gallons, per the American Lung Association—inhalation plays a huge role in how microplastics get into the body, she says. By now, it's common knowledge that breathing in smoke, dust, mold, and other kinds of particle pollution are generally bad for your health. Since microplastics are tiny, non-natural particles found in the air, Wright says that they can be considered particle pollution, too. Wright says that microplastics are likely not as toxic as lead, mercury, or the carcinogenic chemicals that come from burning oil, gas, or coal; lead poisoning, for example, causes almost one million deaths per year. Still, they're probably not the best thing to ingest. A recent 2024 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients with a higher amount of microplastics in their carotid artery plaques were at a higher risk of stroke. Right now, there's an emerging correlation—but not necessarily a causation—between microplastics and microvascular (heart) disorders, and between microplastics and inflammation, Aagaard says. So, it's not known whether microplastics are causing the microvascular disorders and inflammation. Another 2025 study in Nature Medicine found about a spoon's worth of microplastics in postmortem brains, and found higher concentrations of microplastics in the brains of those with dementia. However, the relationship between microplastics and dementia is not necessarily causal; because dementia can cause impairment to the blood-brain barrier (thus impacting the brain's ability to keep unwelcome particles out) a higher concentration of microplastics would be expected in the brain anyway, according to the study. In lab studies, throwing microplastics on animal immune and gut cells alters them. It causes oxidative stress, which is a cellular imbalance that can lead to inflammation, says Eliseo Castillo, PhD, an associate professor and director of gastroenterology research at the University of New Mexico and a coauthor of the Nature Medicine study. So far, scientists like Castillo haven't been able to fully determine what this inflammatory effect means for humans. An interesting clue: a 2022 study in Environmental Science & Technology found that stools from participants with inflammatory bowel disease contained a higher concentration of microplastics than those without the disease. But again, that's not to say that this association is causal. While Castillo hasn't seen evidence of microplastics causing inflammation in a healthy human gut, he says it's possible that microplastics could very well exacerbate inflammatory bowel disease. While microplastics have not yet been found in human fetuses, scientists have found them in human placentas. Aagaard, who studies the connections between microplastics and reproductive health, coauthored a 2024 study in Toxicological Sciences that looked at 62 placenta samples and detected microplastics in all of them. In her more recent research, she also discovered that microplastic levels were elevated in placentae from preterm births compared to the placentae of full-term births. While many studies have been done on animals, understanding cause and effect in humans is a bit harder. Mixing microplastics with animal cells in a petri dish is not the same as a human ingesting microscopic amounts of plastic over time, so it may not be an accurate enough way to look at microplastics in our system, says Castillo. The same limitation goes for feeding a lab mouse microplastics for weeks on end and studying the impact on the animal—that isn't how humans ingest microplastics, so those studies may not be super accurate. Plus, it's difficult to keep microplastics out of samples in lab studies, says Castillo. Collection tubes, research instruments, and even air particles can contain microplastics, which can contaminate specimens in the lab. That doesn't mean that plastics aren't in the specimens; it just means that it's hard to be completely certain of microplastic levels when the laboratory is full of microplastic contamination. While researchers figure out the impact of microplastics on our bodies, here are some tips from the experts for minimizing exposure: Don't microwave food in . Doing so can cause millions of microplastic particles to transfer into food, per 2023 research in Environmental Science & Technology. Avoid exposure to tires and traffic. (Not so) fun fact: Car tires are a significant source of microplastic air pollution. However, you can avoid breathing in the small nanoparticles by closing your car windows and avoiding busy roads when you have the option, says Wright. Swap synthetic fibers for natural ones. Given that synthetic fibers in fabrics make up a large amount of microplastics in the environment, Wright suggests replacing synthetic upholsteries, furniture, carpets, and clothing with natural materials (like cotton) to lower your exposure through your skin and airways. Minimize use of plastic water bottles. A liter of bottled water can contain 240,000 tiny particles of plastic, per the National Institutes of Health (NIH). So you may want to invest in a reusable water bottle, especially a metal one. Reduce the amount of you eat. Microplastics have been found in ultra-processed foods due to the processing and packing of the foods, per a 2025 review in Genomic Press. Bisphenol A (BPA) has also been found in plastic food wrappers. Until there's more research on the long-term effects of microplastics on our bodies, you can follow those tips to decrease your exposure—and to reduce your overall plastic pollution while you're at it. After all, using less plastic is better for you, your community, and the planet anyway; it's a win-win.
