NDTV Exclusive: How Rs 5 Indian Biscuit Is Being Sold For Rs 2,400 In Gaza

Parle-G biscuits, a staple in Indian households, associated with childhood, tea breaks, and low-cost nutrition, were never intended to be a luxury. But in wartorn Gaza, where food scarcity has turned into acute famine, they are being sold at nearly 500 times their original price.
In a recent viral post from Gaza, a man claimed that Parle G biscuits, manufactured by Mumbai-headquartered Parle Products, are being sold for over 24 euros (Rs 2,342). Many on social media were baffled by the cost of the biscuits that have consistently been among the cheapest foods in the Indian market.
"After a long wait, I finally got Ravif her favorite biscuits today. Even though the price jumped from 1.5 euros to over 24 euros, I just couldn't deny Rafif her favorite treat," the viral post read.

A Manufactured Famine
Following the October 2023 escalation and Israel's military campaign that began shortly thereafter, Gaza's access to food has been systematically reduced. Between March 2 and May 19 this year, the besieged Palestinian enclave faced a near-total blockade. Only a limited number of humanitarian trucks were allowed through, most of them after intense international pressure.
Israel, which accuses Hamas, the political and militant group within Gaza, of seizing and weaponising aid, had suspended traditional UN food deliveries. Instead, a controversial and heavily criticised alternative was introduced on May 27 - the Secure Distribution Site 1 (SDS1) model, developed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which, according to the French daily Le Monde, is a joint initiative backed by the US, Switzerland, and Israel.
The SDS1, located in Rafah, features caged corridors forcing Palestinians into narrow queues, guarded perimeters manned by Safe Reach Solutions, a US-based private security firm, which has been accused of carrying out intelligence operations in Gaza using Israeli data.
But how much aid reaches the truly hungry? How many aid boxes are being sold on the black market for inflated prices?
The Black Market Reality
The steep pricing is not limited to Parle-G, which is an export from a country located roughly 4,300 km away.
"The problem isn't with the original suppliers or taxation," Dr. Khaled Alshawwa, a 31-year-old surgeon based in Gaza City, told NDTV. "These goods usually enter Gaza as humanitarian aid, free of charge. But only a minority receives them. Scarcity turns them into high-priced black market goods."
Mr Alshawwa, managed to get his hands on a packet of Parle-G biscuits, which he said cost him roughly Rs 240. Different locations, different prices depending on who the seller is.
"The closure of borders for more than three months now has allowed only a scarce amount of very basic needs that don't meet the needs of 2 million people. So when some people are able to get some, or when looting happens, these foods are being sold at very high, unaffordable prices." Dr Alshawwa told NDTV.
Parle-G, it appears, likely arrived through aid shipments, eventually landing in the hands of a few vendors who sold it at prices unreachable to most Gazans. NDTV has reached out to the company for a statement.

Why Parle-G Matters
Parle-G is more than food. It is nostalgia wrapped in paper. Launched in 1938, the biscuit emerged during India's Swadeshi movement as a local alternative to elite British snacks. It became a national equaliser, a biscuit anyone could afford.
Over the decades, Parle-G has managed to retain its low price tag thanks to 'shrinkflation' economics - reducing weight while maintaining price. A Rs 5 packet that once held 100 grams now contains about 55 grams. Still, it remains among the cheapest packaged food products in India.
In 2013, Parle-G became the first Indian FMCG brand to cross Rs 5,000 crore in sales. By 2011, it was the world's largest selling biscuit by volume, according to Nielsen.

Escorts Kubota eyes No 2 spot in Indian tractor market with new launches

Farm machinery and construction equipment major Escorts Kubota Ltd is gunning for the number two spot in the Indian tractor market by combining the Indian firm's cost competitiveness with the Japanese partner's technology and quality strengths as part of its future plans, according to its top officials. The company, formed after Japan's Kubota Corporation acquired a majority stake in Escorts Ltd in a multi-structured merger deal announced in 2021, is working to finalise a mid-term plan (MTP) for up to 2031 with a slew of products planned to be launched, Escorts Kubota Ltd (EKL) Chairman and MD Nikhil Nanda and Deputy MD Seiji Fukuoka told PTI in a joint interview. "In the next four to five years between the three brands -- Farmtrac, Powertrac and Kubota -- I think the success is going to come from the new products that we are going to be launching. Lot of work has happened, and a lot of product lines are planned for introduction between now and the next five years...," Nanda said responding to a query on the road ahead. These products are for domestic as well as international markets and for different applications, and also for the construction business as well, he added without elaborating details. "Product planning, innovation and development is going to play an extremely important role for the kind of growth that we are envisioning," Nanda said. When asked about the company's growth ambitions, Fukuoka said,"In the domestic market, our first target would be to get to number two position. Presently, our market share is somewhere between 12 to 13 per cent." EKL is a distant fourth in the Indian tractor market that is currently led by Mahindra-Swaraj combined with around 40 per cent share. TAFE and Sonalika are the other players in the top three, he noted. In FY25, tractor retail sales were at 8,83,095 units as against 8,92,410 units in FY24, according to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) data. Both Nanda and Fukuoka declined to put a timeline to their target to become the number two player in the Indian market reiterating that it is "an ambition for the future". Fukuoka, however, said as the Indian market "is more of a mature or saturated market", the priority for EKL is to ensure its products "get selected by the customer before the competition". In order to achieve that, he said efforts are on to bring together the strengths of Escorts, which is cost competitive products and that of Kubota's technology and quality. "Presently, we are thinking of putting Kubota quality in the low cost yet good tractor and putting it in the price sensitive we end up putting the price higher because of the high quality, or make the price higher, then it will lose its value. So that is why, in this MTP, it is a very big theme on how to make good quality yet low-cost tractors," Fukuoka asserted. He said as Kubota has been collaborating for the last five years now with Escorts, it has also learned "what are the points where we can improve the quality without increasing the price and that know-how will also be shared globally in order to contribute to Kubota's global growth". In terms of network presence, Nanda said earlier Escorts was strong in North and West markets, while Kubota was strong in South and East. The coming together of the two entities has also helped in having a strong presence across India with over 1,500 plus dealers, Nanda said adding, "we still believe we have certain vacant spaces where we will be appointing dealers". Fukuoka said recently top officials of Kubota's sales firm in the Americas, where the company has a strong sales network maintaining a high market share, came to India to share experience and advised EKL dealers "on what can be done" to increase market share. On the export front, Fukuoka said,"By coming together as EKL now we are able to design tractors in India, procure things in India, and manufacture them in India and send them to the whole world through Kubota channels. This, of course, contributes to EKL's growth, but at the same time it also contributes to Kubota's growth." In Europe, he said Kubota has been able to recapture its market share in the compact tractor segment after introducing EKL's high quality and cost competitive product. "This is something that is already a success story. We have been able to regain market share and similar things can be done in different markets. India made tractors can be sold through Kubota sales network, so that the sales company of Kubota can also get profit and EKL can also make profit," Fukuoka noted. At present, exports account for 5 per cent of EKL's total sales and in the long term it is aiming to increase it to around 10-15 per cent.

Belgium-headquartered Radisson Hotel Group is eyeing to double its portfolio in India in the next few years, from over 200 operational hotels at present, with a focus on a sustainable and inclusive growth model, according to a senior company official. In an interview to PTI, Radisson Hotel Group Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer for South Asia Nikhil Sharma said its hotel in Pahalgam is currently operating at an occupancy rate of 20-30 per cent of what the occupancies were last year, in the aftermath of the recent terror attack on tourists that shook the nation. Notably, Radisson is the largest luxury hotel chain in Jammu and Kashmir, with seven hotels in operation, including five in the valley, and 2-3 hotels in the pipeline. "We are, I would say, operating between 20 to 30 per cent in cities like Pahalgam. So in Srinagar, we are about 50 per cent of what the occupancies were last year. Last year, about 35 lakh tourists came into the valley. "This year, we are not seeing those numbers. But I truly believe that Kashmir is an all-weather destination, and we are going to be working with the government, making sure that we promote tourism in all seasons," Nikhil shared. He asserted that Radisson Hotels Group will require an additional workforce of 16,000 in India, as it ramps up its presence in the country with 8,000 keys in the pipeline, and growth centred around Tier-II, Tier-III and Tier-IV cities. Radisson Hotels Group's currently has around 19,000 employees. "This year we will open 20 hotels. In the last five years, we've signed 51 hotels, which has been the highest signings ever. Last year itself, we did 36 signings. ...Our growth will be in Tier-II, Tier-III, Tier-IV, cities, or even destinations that we want to be flag planters," he said. Nikhil shared that Radisson is looking at eventually doubling its portfolio in India in the next few years, because it's a "golden era" for the company, while underscoring the need for sustainable and inclusive growth and ensuring that the local community gets hired and works in its hotels. "We have close to 19,000 employees at the moment and every room takes 1.2 to 1.9 team members. We have a pipeline of about 8,000 more keys that we are going to be developing. So another 16,000 team members at any given point of time will be joining us in the near future," Sharma said.
