Farmers seek monetary assistance for crops damage

The Hindu27-06-2025
Farmers who lost crops to natural calamities and were yet to receive compensation for the damage from the government, during the farmers' grievance meeting held here on Friday, demanded the District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon to expedite the disbursal process.
Muthuramu, district president, Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, said that farmers who lost crops like paddy, millets, chilly, cotton, and others to excess rains and drought conditions, received the crop insurance amount, but the assistance extended by the State government was yet to be provided to them.
An official responding to their queries informed that as ₹38 crores crop insurance amount was already distributed to the affected farmers, they have sought ₹27 crores from the State government to provide monetary assistance to the farmers.
Other farmers raised issues of rampant growth of seemai karuvelam on water bodies and vacant lands.
Vijayan, a farmer from Malangudi, said that due to the uncontrolled growth of the invasive species, the water level has drastically fallen.
'This not only affects the water supply for drinking purposes and agricultural purposes but also reduces the water holding capacity of the Earth,' he stated.
Mr. Simranjeet Singh Kahlon assured the farmers their grievances would be addressed by the respective departments at the earliest.

Rise of Global South shaping new world order, says PM Modi in Ghana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi , addressing Ghana's Parliament on Thursday, said the world order created after WWII is changing rapidly, driven by the rise of the Global South and shifting demographics. "In this changing context, we put emphasis on Africa's rightful place at the global high table," Modi said, noting that during India's G20 presidency, "we worked with the vision-One Earth, One Family, One Future," which helped secure permanent G20 membership for the African Union. Calling India the "mother of democracy," Modi said: "Democracy is not merely a system; it is a part of our fundamental values... India has over 2,500 political parties, 20 different parties governing different states, 22 official languages, thousands of dialects. This is also the reason that people who came to India have always been welcomed with open hearts." He said the shared histories of colonialism bind India and Ghana: "Our spirits have always remained free and fearless... Our friendship is sweeter than your famous Sugar Loaf Pineapple." On global challenges, Modi noted: "The challenges, such as colonial rule, that humanity has faced in earlier centuries still persist in different forms... climate change, pandemics, terrorism, and cybersecurity. Institutions created in the last century are struggling to respond. We need more than slogans. We need action." Thanking President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for conferring on him the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, Modi called it a symbol of "enduring friendship." Quoting Ghana's founding father Kwame Nkrumah-"The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart"-Modi underscored the long-term value of building democratic institutions. India and Ghana elevated bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Partnership during Modi's visit, agreeing to enhance cooperation in defence, food security, pharmaceuticals, and vaccine production. Four MoUs were signed, including on traditional medicine and cultural exchanges.

Digital India: PM Modi hails 10 years of initiative; says it's now a ‘people's movement'

File photo: PM Modi (Picture credit: PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday marked ten years of the Digital India initiative with a detailed reflection on its transformative journey, calling it a movement that has empowered 140 crore Indians and elevated India to global digital leadership. In an article shared on LinkedIn, the PM wrote, 'While decades were spent doubting the ability of Indians to use technology, we changed this approach and trusted the ability of Indians to use technology.' Launched in 2015, Digital India was aimed at democratising access to technology and governance. Reflecting on its scale and success, the PM wrote, 'From how we govern, to how we learn, transact, and build, Digital India is everywhere.' PM Modi underlined that internet connections in India have jumped from 25 crore in 2014 to over 97 crore today. Over 42 lakh kilometres of Optical Fibre Cable, equivalent to 11 times the Earth-Moon distance, now links even the remotest villages. He highlighted that India's 5G rollout is among the fastest globally, reaching forward military zones such as Galwan and Siachen. As per a recent PIB release, nearly 6.92 lakh km of optical fibre has been laid under BharatNet , covering over 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? The PM also cited key digital platforms that have become global models — from UPI , now handling over 100 billion transactions annually, to Direct Benefit Transfers worth ₹44 lakh crore that have cut leakages and middlemen. As per official figures, DBT has saved the government over ₹3.48 lakh crore by removing fake beneficiaries. 'Schemes like SVAMITVA have issued 2.4 crore+ property cards and mapped 6.47 lakh villages, ending years of land-related uncertainty,' he noted. Calling India's digital economy a force for inclusion, the PM spotlighted ONDC and GeM as tools that have empowered MSMEs, artisans, and women-led enterprises. 'ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions… GeM has crossed ₹1 lakh crore GMV in just 50 days,' he said. He added that platforms like CoWIN, DigiLocker and FASTag have made India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) a model for the world. Through India's G20 Presidency, the country launched a global DPI repository and a $25 million fund to help other nations adopt inclusive tech systems. According to the PIB, India's digital economy contributed 11.74per cent to GDP in 2022–23 and is expected to rise to 13.42per cent by 2024–25, with projections placing its share near 20per cent by 2030. On the startup front, the PM wrote that India now ranks among the world's top three ecosystems, supported by initiatives like the $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission. As of May 2025, India had over 34,000 GPUs, the largest affordable compute access in the world. 'Digital India has not remained a mere government programme; it has become a people's movement,' PM Modi concluded. 'Let us build what empowers. Let us lead with technology that unites, includes, and uplifts', he wrote.

Musk threatens to form new party over Trump's 'insane' $5 trn spending bill

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has described US President Donald Trump's controversial 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' as 'insane' fiscal policy, threatening to launch his own political outfit if the bill is passed by the US Senate. In a series of posts on X on Monday evening, Musk, a former Trump ally, accused both Republicans and Democrats of abandoning fiscal responsibility, branding the current political landscape as a 'one-party country – the porky pig party'. 'It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS, that we live in a one-party country,' Musk wrote. 'Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people.' Trump's bill draws criticism for welfare, clean energy cuts Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' is a sweeping tax and spending package that has divided Republicans, particularly over cuts to welfare and healthcare programmes. The bill also proposes cuts to electric vehicle and clean energy tax credits, which has led to Musk condemning it as 'incredibly destructive', warning it would wipe out millions of jobs in future-focused industries while propping up 'industries of the past'. Elon Musk targets Republicans backing the bill Musk singled out conservative lawmakers who have long championed austerity. 'How can you call yourself the Freedom Caucus if you vote for a DEBT SLAVERY bill with the biggest debt ceiling increase in history?' the Tesla CEO wrote on X. 'Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame! And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,' he added. 'If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE,' he said. Anyone who campaigned on the PROMISE of REDUCING SPENDING , but continues to vote on the BIGGEST DEBT ceiling increase in HISTORY will see their face on this poster in the primary next year — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 1, 2025 Elon Musk–Donald Trump fallout This latest series of posts marks an escalation in the rift between Trump and Musk since the tech entrepreneur's departure from DOGE, which was tasked with cutting $2 trillion from the US budget. He has repeatedly criticised the administration over the proposed tax bill. Trump has not responded to the latest tirade of social media posts. In a pre-recorded interview aired on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures, Trump had said, 'I haven't spoken to him (Musk) much, but I think Elon is a wonderful guy, and I know he's going to do well always... but he got a little bit upset, and you know that wasn't appropriate.' Republicans expect bill to pass amid Democratic outcry Meanwhile, Democrats have also attacked the bill, particularly over an amendment introduced by Senator Rick Scott, which is projected to strip Medicaid coverage from up to 20 million Americans, according to estimates cited by BBC. In protest, Senate Democrats forced a full reading of the 940-page bill on Sunday, delaying proceedings by 16 hours. However, the vote is expected to be complete by Tuesday morning (local time). White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday that the US President remains confident of the bill's passage and expects to sign it by the fourth of July, in line with the administration's self-imposed deadline.
