How Rutgers football safety Kaj Sanders is working to build on strong freshman season
Just one, to be exact.
The safety out of Bergen Catholic started the Scarlet Knights' season opener against Howard, becoming just the second true freshman ever start a season opener as a defensive player under coach Greg Schiano.

Sanders was filling in for the injured Flip Dixon, but the fact Schiano placed that much trust in him spoke volumes.
'It meant a lot because I love Coach Schiano, I love the school, I love my teammates,' Sanders said following a recent spring practice. 'So for them to be able to trust me as a true freshman and trust me to do my job and make plays, it means everything to me.'
That game was only the start.

Sanders went on to play in all 13 games and started a total of six of them. He finished with 43 tackles and four pass breakups, making a strong impression in his true freshman season.
The focus this offseason and in spring camp for Sanders is to build on that valuable experience and continue to develop into an elite defensive back under safeties coach Vic Hall and Schiano, who's well known for developing NFL-ready defensive backs.

Hall is new on the Rutgers coaching staff, but he's been impressed by the young safety so far.
'When I first met Kaj, we talked about how his career had jumpstarted,' Hall said. 'He played as true freshman. My impression on him is just the growth since I've been here, seeing him out there taking command of the defense and growing that way from a maturity standpoint. It's been a great experience so far for me with Kaj.'
Sanders committed to the Scarlet Knights as a highly touted recruit. He was a four-star prospect and the No. 8 overall recruit in New Jersey, according to the 247Sports Composite, which also ranked hm as the No. 41 overall safety in the nation for the Class of 2024.
Along with Rutgers, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wisconsin were the finalists to land Sanders, who ultimately chose to stay close to home.

MORE Rutgers football has 'high expectations' for this young wide receiver; here's why
'It means everything to me, especially being able to play in front of my family and have some of my friends, my teammates from high school,' Sanders said. 'It means everything. I can show them they can come to Rutgers do, show out, make it to the league and do everything they want to do in life.'
But for now, Sanders said his focus is on taking the next step in his development so he can have an ever greater impact on the defense.
'I really need to focus on watching film more and the things I eat,' Sanders said. 'I want to keep gaining weight. I want to weigh more but also be as fast as I was. Those are the two main things I really have to focus on outside of meetings and stuff.'

Sanders is a long way from where he was a year ago, when he was an early enrollee true freshman trying to learn Rutgers' culture and defensive scheme.
Now he has a full Big Ten season under his belt with plenty of production and experience to show for it.
'I'm way different of a player,' Sanders said. 'I'm way comfortable now. I'm not as nervous as I was last spring, I feel like I'm getting to know the defense a lot more now. It feels amazing.'

NFL buys 10% stake in ESPN, which buys NFL Network, RedZone
The NFL sold its NFL Network and Sunday RedZone television show to ESPN on Tuesday in exchange for a 10% equity stake in the US-based sports television network. Both companies announced the deal, which also includes the combining of NFL Fantasy Football with ESPN Fantasy Football. Federal regulators must approve the transaction, a process that could take several months, according to the league. Until the deal closes, fans are unlikely to see any significant changes to ESPN or NFL Network. NFL team owners also must approve the deal, but that is seen as little more than a formality given the expanded reach on offer for NFL programming. "I think we've hooked up with the best partners we can have," said New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, chairman of the NFL's media committee. "That will help expose us to more homes, more of an international audience. Strategically, we have to grow our salary cap and can only do that by -- if we want to keep labor peace, we have to grow our audience. This transaction helps us to do that." Global growth opportunities for the NFL, which already plays games overseas every season, played a key role in motivating the NFL to get terms of the deal sorted. "We're hooking up with the strongest sports amalgamation of sports product," Kraft said. "We're giving them what I believe is the best content, and they're giving us the greatest operational company to grow our audience globally. "This is a way for us to broaden our audience. We've done so much. I don't think there's any company like (ESPN owners) Disney and ESPN in doing sports, all sports. We need to expose our product to more people and a greater variety of people." js/sla

ESPN inks deal with NFL to acquire NFL Network, Red Zone Channel
ESPN and the NFL have reached a deal that will see the Disney-owned sports media company acquire NFL Network and certain other media assets owned and controlled by the NFL in exchange for a 10 percent equity stake in ESPN. The agreement, which will see NFL media assets including NFL's linear RedZone Channel, and NFL Fantasy, will allow the NFL to license to ESPN certain content and other intellectual property to be used by NFL Network and other assets. 'Today's announcement paves the way for the world's leading sports media brand and America's most popular sport to deliver an even more compelling experience for NFL fans, in a way that only ESPN and Disney can,' said Bob Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, promising the deal would 'add to consumer choice,' and 'provide viewers with even greater convenience and quality,' of ESPN's coverage of the league. The deal comes as ESPN prepares to launch a direct-to-consumer streaming service later this year and capitalize on the NFL's explosive popularity. The league has long awarded lucrative media rights agreements with major legacy media companies like Comcast, Disney and Fox, but has in recent years partnered with a growing number of tech companies like Netflix and Amazon to broadcast games. ESPN's push toward direct-to-consumer streaming comes amid broader concerns about increased cord-cutting and an increasingly tough market for advertising on linear television channels.

WATCH: Peyton Manning with message for Indianapolis Colts' rookie TE Tyler Warren
Take a look as Peyton Manning shared a message with Colts' rookie TE Tyler Warren. Before they were legends, they were welcomed the rookie class to the @NFL with a special surprise from some of the game's biggest stars. Fanatics welcomed in members of the 2025 rookie draft class with messages from some of the game's biggest stars. Included was Indianapolis Colts' rookie tight end Tyler Warren, who received his message from Peyton Manning. "It's not always easy competing in the NFL, but Colts' fans stuck with me and I know they'll be behind you every step of the way," Manning said to Warren in a video message. Warren then opened a box, and inside was a signed Peyton Manning Colts jersey with another message. Just a few weeks into training camp, Warren has often been a go-to target in the passing game for both Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. 'Something we thought was a real strength of his was his hands, his ability to focus, concentrate, and make those tough catches,' Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said via the Indy Star. Warren's impact within this Colts' offense will go beyond just the passing game; however, with his ability to be moved around the formation and his willingness as a blocker, he can add some unpredictability to this unit with all the different roles he can fill.
