Wipro revenue drops 2.3% in June quarter
BENGALURU: Wipro's revenue declined by 2.3% in constant currency during the June quarter, though the drop remained within its projected guidance range of –3.5% to –1.5%.
'We started the quarter facing significant macro uncertainty, which kept overall demand muted.
Our clients prioritised initiatives with immediate impact, focusing on cost optimisation and vendor consolidation.
At the same time, they accelerated their AI, data, and modernisation programs. We saw a clear trend of many AI projects moving to scale and production,' said Wipro CEO Srini Pallia.
Operating margins fell to 17.3% in the June quarter from 17.5% in the March quarter of last fiscal, though this marked an 80-basis-point improvement year-on-year.
'In Q1 we delivered 17.3%, which is a 20-basis-point movement. If you look at forex, it's really flattish. Our utilisation has been flattish. We've had some savings in selling, general and administrative expenses, and we had the revenue decline being offset through operational improvements.
That's broadly how I would characterise the margins for the quarter,' said CFO Aparna Iyer.
Q1FY26 Snapshot
Despite modest revenue performance, Wipro reported strong deal wins, with total contract value (TCV) reaching $5 billion—a 50.7% year-on-year increase.
Large deals contributed $2.7 billion, up 131% year-on-year. Iyer noted that execution of these large deals would span 6–8 quarters, with stronger impact expected in the second half of the fiscal. Most of these deals focused on cost reduction and vendor consolidation.
Across geographies, the Americas grew 1.5% year-on-year in constant currency, maintaining strong deal momentum. Revenue in APMEA remained flat, supported by digital spending in India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Pallia said Europe continued to face headwinds, with clients prioritising competitiveness. 'In BFSI, demand is strong and steady,' he said.
Wipro has guided for sequential revenue growth of -1% to 1% in constant currency for the Sept quarter. Wipro's workforce declined by 114 employees, bringing total headcount to 233,232 at the end of the June quarter.

Sam Altman predicts AI will change education in 18 years, colleges will become obsolete: ‘My son will never be smarter than…'
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently shared a provocative perspective on the future of education, suggesting that traditional college may soon be outdated, especially in a world shaped by artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking on the This Past Weekend podcast with comedian Theo Von, Altman said he doubts his own child will pursue a college education. When asked if he thought his child would attend university, he said, 'Probably not.' Altman had dropped out of Stanford University in 2005 before becoming a tech billionaire. Altman emphasised on the effect that AI will have on how future generations learn and grow. 'In that world, education is going to feel very different. I already think college is, like, maybe not working great for most people, but I think if you fast-forward 18 years, it's going to look like a very, very different thing.' Altman said that children born today will grow up in a world where AI will always be smarter than they are, and embedded into every product and service they encounter. He said the fundamental change will redefine the very purpose and structure of education. He also expressed concern for older generations. 'I actually think the kids will be fine; I'm worried about the parents,' he said. 'If you look at the history of the world, when there's a new technology, people that grow up with it, they are always fluent. They always figure out what to do. They always learn the new kinds of jobs. But if you are like a 50-year-old and you have to kind of learn how to do things in a very different way, that doesn't always work,' he added. Altman also addressed the increasing impact of tech on children's mental health, including the addictive nature of short-form videos. However, he highlighted that AI doesn't mean the end of education or work, comparing it to the invention of the calculator. 'I'm sure the same thing happened with the calculator before, and now this is just a new tool that exists in the tool chain,' he said. While Altman acknowledged that AI will inevitably take over some jobs, he believes that many more jobs and opportunities will emerge. He also said that an AI CEO could one day lead OpenAI, transforming the very job he currently holds. Altman added that human creativity, drive, and social nature would continue to shape progress. 'In the same way people from the time of the Industrial Revolution might have viewed modern humans as leading a relatively easy existence, looking forward 100 years from now, we may well think the same thing,' he said. 'I think it's great that those people in the past think we have it so easy. I think it's great that we think those people in the future have it so easy'.

TCS layoffs sound alarm bells for senior techies, managers; CEO says ‘A very senior person may not…'
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT services provider, will lay off two percent of its workforce in a move that will affect around 12,000 employees. The layoffs will primarily affect middle and senior management, Reuters reported, citing the company on Sunday. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) CEO K Krithivasan said AI is not responsible for the layoffs.(PTI) Layoffs at TCS Considered the bellwether of the Indian IT industry, TCS's announcement has sounded alarm bells for techies who have seen a veritable bloodbath in terms of layoffs over the last few years. TCS chief executive officer and managing director K Krithivasan told Moneycontrol that AI is not to be blamed for the workforce reduction. 'No, this is not because of AI giving some 20 percent productivity gains. We are not doing that. This is driven by where there is a skill mismatch, or, where we think that we have not been able to deploy someone,' said Krithivasan. 'We trained a lot of people. We have trained about 550,000 people at the initial skills, 100,000 at the advanced skills. Essentially, after training whether we have the deployment feasibility issue. 'So, some of them could be trained, but maybe we are not able to train beyond level 1 and level 2 skills, because when the person is at a very senior person they may not be able to use the entry level skills,' he explained. Alarm bells for senior employees The news of layoffs affecting middle and senior level employees, coupled with TCS CEO's statement, have reignited concerns about the 'shelf life' of a techie in what many are coming to see as an oversaturated industry. 'Always remember: When managers are not billable, they are huge cost to the company,' wrote one X user. 'Cost of one manager = cost of five junior developers'. 'If you're 45 or approaching that age, surviving in the IT industry becomes increasingly difficult. You could be shown the door at any time,' X user Rohit Kumar Gupta added. 'Read what TCS said, middle and senior management positions. These guys are not on bench. TCS wants to cut costs and they will save max from those positions not a guy on bench,' a user noted. 'TCS layoffs should serve as a warning shot for all Mid and Senior level IT professionals. In my limited experience, many in this layers have stopped learning and have become pen pushers, thus increasing the risk of getting laid off,' X user Mohan Kumar warned.
