Senior US official meets Dalai Lama in Dharamshala: Embassy
Bethany Poulos Morrison, who met the Tibetan spiritual leader, is a deputy assistant secretary in the US Department of State's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA).
In a post on X, the embassy also shared some photos of the meeting. "@State_SCA Deputy Assistant Secretary Morrison had the honor of visiting Dharamshala and meeting with His Holiness @DalaiLama during his 90th birthday celebration. Yesterday, @SecRubio shared birthday wishes and reaffirmed US support for fundamental freedom of Tibetans," the embassy posted. Thousands gathered in the main courtyard of Tsuglagkhang, the Dalai Lama temple in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala on Sunday to celebrate the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama, while greetings poured from across the world for the Tibetan spiritual leader.
Political leaders from India and abroad also shared the stage with the Dalai Lama, throwing their support behind the Buddhist leader, who has been living in exile in India and has been fighting for the rights of the Tibetan people since the region came under Chinese occupation in the 1960s. Morrison arrived in India a few days ago. The US Embassy in a post on X on Thursday wrote, "Welcome to India, @State_SCA Deputy Assistant Secretary Morrison. We look forward to a productive and engaging trip as we continue to advance the US-India Strategic Partnership. #USIndiaFWD". The Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs oversees the US foreign policy and relations with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, according to the US Department of State's website.
Morrison is the deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs for India and Bhutan, the website says.

The top leaders of BRICS held deliberations on a range of pressing challenges facing the globe on the first day of the grouping's two-day annual summit in this seaside Brazilian city. "This attack was a blow not only on India but on the entire humanity," Mr. Modi said about the Pahalgam attack, adding "condemning terrorism should be our 'principle', not just a 'convenience'". "If we first see in which country the attack took place, against whom, then it would be a betrayal against humanity. There should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists," he said. Call for imposing sanctions on terrorists Mr. Modi's call for imposing sanctions on terrorists without hesitation comes against the backdrop of China blocking efforts at the U.N. Security Council in recent years to list several Pakistan-based terrorists. The Prime Minister also asserted that the victims and supporters of terrorism cannot be "weighed on the same scale'. "For personal or political gain, giving silent consent to terrorism, supporting terror or terrorists, should not be acceptable under any circumstances," he said. "There should be no difference between words and actions regarding terrorism. If we cannot do this, then the question naturally arises whether we are serious about the fight against terrorism or not," he asked. The Prime Minister expressed his "heartfelt gratitude" to the friendly countries who stood with India and supported it following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin skipped the summit, hosted by Brazil in its capacity as the current chair of the grouping. The BRICS has emerged as an influential grouping as it brings together 11 major emerging economies of the world, representing around 49.5% of the global population, around 40% of the global GDP and around 26% of the global trade. Mr. Modi said global peace and security is not just an ideal, but it is the "foundation of our common interests and future". "Development of humanity is possible only in a peaceful and secure environment. BRICS has a very important role in fulfilling this objective," he said. "To face our common challenges, we have to unite and make collective efforts. We have to move forward together," he added. In his remarks, Mr. Modi also expressed serious concerns over the situation in Gaza. PM Modi's comment on Gaza "From West Asia to Europe, today the world is surrounded by disputes and tensions. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is a cause of great concern," he said. The Prime Minister added that "India firmly believes that no matter how difficult the circumstances are, the path of peace is the only option for the welfare of humanity." "India is the land of Lord Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi. There is no place for war and violence for us," he added. The Prime Minister said "India supports every effort that takes the world away from division and conflict and leads it towards dialogue, cooperation and coordination and increases solidarity and trust". "In this direction, we are committed to cooperation and partnership with all friendly countries," he said.

June 30 meeting of CPC Assumptions were being made about his retirement after state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the powerful 24-member Political Bureau of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), in its meeting on June 30, reviewed a set of new regulations on the work of party's institutions, the report said. Jinping himself headed the meeting where he stressed that the regulations will further standardise the establishment, responsibilities, and operations of the CPC Central Committee's decision-making, deliberative, and coordinating institutions. 'Such institutions should exercise more effective leadership and coordination over major tasks and focus on planning, discussing, and overseeing major tasks', said the Xinhua report. What do experts say? Some experts assert that Jinping, regarded as the most powerful leader after CPC founder Mao Zedong, and as a leader for life, may be delegating some powers to focus on larger issues. 'It does seem that Xi might pay less attention to day-to-day details, which necessitates a policing mechanism to ensure that his policy priorities are still being carried out by lower-level officials,' said Victor Shih, a specialist in Chinese elite politics and finance at the University of California San Diego, while talking to South China Morning Post. The speculations started doing the rounds after Jinping did not make any public appearance between May 21 and June 5. Xi Jinping, who is considered a superpower in China, did not attend the BRICS summit being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from Sunday, 06 July 2025. This happened for the first time since he took office. Analysts say his plan to remain in power or share power was expected to unravel before or during the next five-year congress of the CPC to be held in 2027, by which time his third term will end, the PTI report said.
