Turning trash into energy

His father has helmed an aluminum die-casting MSME serving the automobiles and telecommunications sector for 25 years. When Guru took up management, he opted for forward-integration by making aluminium alloys. That's when he noticed the large volume of electronic waste being collected even by a metal recycling company. "This was a niche market which many people did not focus on. So we ventured into refining critical materials from electronic waste," he says.
Starting with
battery recycling
, Boson is focused on building lithium-ion cells for drones, EVs and
energy storage applications
(ESS). It grinds, separates and purifies critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite and converts them into battery grade chemicals. Having studied mechatronics and conducted projects in electrochemistry in college helped. "We started these research projects in 2019 to develop refining technologies. Initially, we sold cathode and anode materials, then we focussed on battery cells, as each cell maker has unique needs, and there were limited opportunities," he said. The tech is well understood, but it is hard to execute and is also capital intensive, he adds.
The startup has developed proprietary technology for refining and processing these materials, which make up around 35% weight of the battery cell. The trading of these materials drew intense scrutiny in the aftermath of recent geopolitical shifts, including China's export controls on battery and refining technologies that took effect in January. Currently India imports more than 80% of its cells and it predominantly comes from China.
Boson Cell
has built a facility for recovering critical minerals through a process known as black mass generation at Sriperumbudur, with an initial capacity of 0.8 gigawatt hours. "Currently, this serves up to 30% of our inputs, enabling us to focus on the primary business of building cells, but we plan to expand this capacity in the future," Guru Punghavan says. He also worked with South Korean companies to establish manufacturing lines, SoPs and clean rooms for cell manufacturing.
Boson Cell has developed two cells for drones with nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry and is in the process of building four more cells and exploring different cell chemistries, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP). "There are discussions around curbs on rare earth material exports from China. While it does not affect us now, it has highlighted the risks in the battery supply chain. Recycling of e-waste and refining capabilities for lithium, cobalt and nickel are in nascent stage in India and it affects our cell production," he says.
The company has raised $1.5 million from friends and family and plans to raise more capital for expanding its production capacity, specifically targeting EV cells. The startup has partnered with drone OEMs and is in talks with electric two and three wheeler OEMs for pilot projects. It is also expecting financial support from the Centre under the Fame II programme. Guru Punghavan believes the govt's targeted support for smaller battery cell manufactures could boost the ecosystem. The startup aims to build a one lakh cell a day production line by the next fiscal and it hopes to source 100% of its materials for the cells from inhouse recycling. The startup is betting on providing faster turnaround times and lower minimum order quantities to gain market share.

VOC Port handles 15 million tonnes of cargo this fiscal

The V.O. Chidambaranar Port crossed the 15-million tonne mark in cargo handling in this financial year on August 3. This milestone has been achieved 11 days ahead as compared to the previous financial year. An official statement said the port had handled 2,98,107 TEUs of containers up to August 3 this financial year, registering a growth of 9.75% compared to the 2,71,620 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of the previous financial year. The major commodities that contributed to this achievement include coal, limestone, salt, rock phosphate, edible oil, and construction material. The rapid growth in exports from Tiruppur, Coimbatore, and Karur has increased the container volumes. The operationalisation of North Cargo Berth-III for handling bulk cargo, which was recently dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 26, is another major contributor to the port's improved performance. The port's primary hinterland has been witnessing rapid industrialisation with the proposed man-made fiber factory by a Singapore-based firm, footwear manufacturing facility to be set up by a South Korean firm in Tirunelveli disrtict coupled with new investments in defence and space technology. Start-ups too augur well for VOC Port's cargo handling. 'Hence, the cargo handling of VOC Port in near future will scale greater heights,' said Port Chairman Susanta Kumar Purohit, who congratulated all stakeholders and trade partners for their continued support and contribution towards this significant achievement, the statement said.

India's MSME confidence index rises to 63.75 in Q1 FY26: SIDBI

India's Composite MSME Business Confidence Index (M-BCI) for the first quarter (Q1) of fiscal 2026 (FY26) rose to 63.75 from 60.82 in the previous quarter, according to the MSME Outlook Survey. This uptick reflects a favourable business environment for MSMEs, with the manufacturing and trading sectors experiencing sharper improvements. India's MSME confidence rose in Q1 FY26, with the M-BCI at 63.75 and M-BEI at 62.19, signalling improved sentiment, especially in manufacturing, trading, and services. Sales, profits, finance access, and skilled labour availability improved. Capacity use rose, while EoDB and interest rate outlook showed positive trends, per SIDBI's pan-India MSME survey. The Composite MSME Business Expectations Index (M-BEI) stands at 62.19 for the next quarter and rises to 67.88 for the corresponding quarter next year. Although a moderate dip in the expectation indices is observed for Q2 FY26, the quarterly publication by the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) revealed. In terms of sales performance, more than half of the MSMEs in the manufacturing and trading sectors reported growth in Q1 FY26. Year-on-year, MSMEs across all sectors indicated consistent sales growth, with around 60 per cent expecting further expansion over the next year. Despite a reported increase in input costs, MSMEs across sectors experienced improved net profit margins. The availability of skilled labour showed a notable improvement. Nearly one-fourth of MSMEs across all sectors reported better availability of skilled workers. Capacity utilisation among respondents improved during the current round, with nearly a fifth reporting above-normal utilisation levels in both manufacturing and services. This momentum is expected to carry forward, with nearly 29 per cent projecting a further increase in capacity utilisation over the next year. Access to finance also improved, with 88 per cent of participating MSMEs confirming the availability of overall finance—up from 79 per cent in the previous survey, SIDBI said in a media release. The survey suggests a gradual improvement in the interest rate environment, with fewer respondents reporting a rise in the cost of finance compared to the previous round. MSMEs, nevertheless, remain concerned about high financing costs. The recent 100 basis point reduction in the RBI's benchmark repo rate since February 2025 indicates a positive trend, with interest rate transmission underway, which is expected to ease financing challenges for MSMEs. The current survey also highlights an improvement in the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB). Around 50 per cent of respondents across sectors reported a better EoDB experience during Q1 FY26. Expectations for the future are equally positive, with more than 60 per cent anticipating further enhancements over the next year. In particular, about 50 per cent noted improvements in return filings and periodic compliance procedures. The indices, ranging from 0 to 100, reflect MSME sentiment and are based on six key parameters including sales, margins, labour, and finance availability. The current round is based on inputs from a representative sample of 1,200 MSMEs across different regions and industries. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (HU)
