Minister Uttam Reddy hits out at Harish Rao, rebuts allegations on paddy procurement

HYDERABAD
Minister for Civil Supplies and Irrigation N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday hit back at former minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader T. Harish Rao on the latter's allegations over paddy procurement and cited official statistics asking him to stop 'daily campaign of falsehoods'.
In a statement, Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that there was a sharp increase in paddy procurement during the current Rabi season. He stated that the government had procured 43.1 lakh tonnes of paddy as on May 12.
The data shared by the Minister revealed that the Telangana government had procured 43.1 lakh metric tonnes (LMTs) of paddy during the ongoing Rabi 2024–25 season, up to May 12. As on the same day last year, the Rabi procurement was 29.88 lakh tonnes and a year before (2022-23) it was only 19.62 lakh tonnes.
The statistics indicated nearly 44% jump over last year's procurement and more than 120% when compared to 2022-23, reflecting the current administration's proactive efforts, the Minister said.
The Minister stated that the Congress government had opened more procurement centres and streamlined operations to benefit farmers directly. Timely procurement had brought relief to paddy cultivators across Telangana as the government was ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) and also paying ₹500 bonus per quintal for fine varieties of paddy.
He highlighted the State's record-breaking paddy production in 2024-25 Kharif/Vanakalam season, when 153.5 lakh tonnes of paddy was produced in 66.7 lakh acres, while the ongoing Rabi/Yasangi crop covered 60.14 lakh acres with the yield estimated to be about 129 lakh tonnes — production of over 280 lakh tonnes in a year.
Meanwhile, sources stated that about 61.45% of the planned procurement (70.13 lakh tonnes) was completed so far by opening 8,245 procurement centres. Of the 43.1 lakh tonnes procured so far, 27.75 lakh tonnes was of common varieties and 15.35 lakh tonnes of fine varieties.
The value of paddy procured so far was ₹9,999.36 crore with 6.58 lakh farmers selling their produce. The farmers were made payments of ₹6,671 crore so far, including ₹767 crore paid as bonus to fine varieties.

BRS braces for battle with PPTs to rebut Ghose Commission's report

Hyderabad: The BRS leaders would be giving a powerpoint presentation on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project in a counter to the report by the PC Ghose Commission. To begin with, Harish Rao would be giving a presentation at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday, which would be telecast in the district party offices. According to party sources, during the recent meetings at the farmhouse, the BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao has asked the senior leader T Harish Rao to prepare a counter report to the PC Ghose Commissions report so that the people can be made aware of the BRS side of the story. A senior leader of the party said that there were several rounds of meetings in KCR's farm house even before the Commission could give its report. The party leaders discussed how to move forward as it was expected that the report would be in favour of the government. The party chief wanted the leaders to explain to people about the positive impact the report has created in Telangana including the huge production of food grains including paddy, said the BRS leader. Party leaders said that the leaders in districts have been asked to present in the district offices and witness the powerpoint presentation being given in Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday. The BRS chief wanted to clear the air on the misinformation carried out against an engineering marvel like Kaleshwaram. The party leaders will insist on the fact that not the entire project but only two pillars were damaged. The Kaleshwaram project is not just Medigadda, it has three barrages (Medigadda, Annaram, Sundilla), 15 reservoirs, 21 pump houses, 19 substations, 203 km of tunnel, 141 tmcft of storage capacity and 240 tmcft of water utilization, said the BRS leader. Sources said that the BRS chief wanted the party leaders to go to the people and explain to them that the people in the government were trying to divert their attention from the serious issues and put the blame on BRS chief KCR. The BRS chief said in the meeting that the Congress party will be using this report for their advantage in the upcoming local body elections hence the report was released at this juncture. The party leaders also said that the party should focus on the bypolls which were inevitable with the Supreme Court's orders. Sources also said that the party may challenge the report of the Commission in the Court.

Kaleshwaram report trimmed down to sully KCR's image, says Niranjan

Hyderabad: Stating that the 665-page Kaleshwaram report was shortened only to defame BRS President K Chandrashekar Rao, party's senior leader S Niranjan Reddy on Monday said that the Kaleshwaram report can be challenged in the court. Addressing a press conference here at Telangana Bhavan, Niranjan Reddy said that Kaleswaram was constructed to quench the thirst of Telangana. It is ridiculous for Congress to talk about changing the site. The Congress party has a history of permanently betraying Telangana by changing the site of Nagarjuna Sagar with malicious intent and malice. Because of the Congress' sin, water was cut off from the Telangana region. The retired engineers' forum has submitted a report on why the site was changed. No matter how much mud is thrown by blocking the media, the truth will be before the people in the future, said Niranjan Reddy. The BRS leader said that no permissions were given for any reservoirs constructed in undivided Andhra Pradesh state during the rule of Chandrababu Naidu and YS Rajashekhara Reddy. They are spewing poison on Kaleswaram, which was built with all the permits. They were unable to bear to see Telangana which is turning green. Every person in Telangana knows Chandrababu Naidu has raised objections to the project and lodged complaints, said Reddy alleging a section of the media was constantly trying to portray Telangana's successes as failures. The BRS leader asked why the Ghosh Commission report was not disclosed as it is. It should also be known that the report given by the Commission is not final and can be taken to court, as stated in the Commission of Inquiries Act. The 665-page Ghosh Commission report was being shortened to 60 pages to blame KCR. Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy was working by begging the media. Telangana society has been struggling for water for four decades. He alleged that the Congress party did great injustice to Telangana. The former minister said that out of 85 pillars in Medigadda, two were partially damaged and there were 66 pillars in Annaram and 74 in Sundilla. Except for three, all the others fine? The remaining pumping stations, the rest were fine, right? Why did the construction company come forward and say that they will repair it and bear the cost of Rs. 400 crore, he asked. He further asked why the government was releasing the report of the officials instead of releasing the Ghose Commission report. BRS leaders Ch Rakesh Kumar and Abhilash Rangineni were also present.

Damning evidence against KCR and ex-ministers: Ghose panel report on KLIS to be tabled in spl Assembly session

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who chaired a meeting of the Cabinet at the Secretariat on Monday and accepted the report of the PC Ghose Commission, which had probed allegations of massive corruption and improper execution of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), said matter-of-factly that the state government would table the report at a special session of the Assembly soon and, after 'seeking the opinion of every member' in the House' take action based on the findings of the panel. According to official sources who were privy to a power-point presentation made by State Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on the summary of the judicial commission's report during the cabinet meeting, the Commission has found former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao responsible for the alleged irregularities in the construction of the project. The Commission has observed in its report that Rao was directly and indirectly responsible for the irregularities in the project, right from its planning and construction to operation and maintenance of the barrages which are part of the project, sources said. The Commission pointed fingers also at former irrigation minister T Harish Rao, a nephew of KCR. A committee of experts had advised against taking up the Kaleshwaram project, but the BRS regime had "intentionally suppressed" the report, they said. The sources said the officials had prepared a 60-page summary of the report, which runs into 665 pages. The summary mentioned the names of KCR 32 times, Harish Rao 19 times and former minister Eatala Rajender five times. Rajender is now a BJP Lok Sabha member. The report found Rajender, who was finance minister during the BRS regime, to be negligent, the sources said. Briefing the press after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister, apparently enthused by the damning evidence against former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and ex-ministers, said that since the report was prepared by an independent judicial commission, the question of resorting to politics of vengeance did not arise. Going by the findings of the Commission highlighted in the report, the government will initiate action against those who were involved in the 'embezzlement of public money in the construction of the Kaleshwaram project.'
