WATCH: Florida officers punch, drag a Black man from his car during traffic stop

Indian Express5 days ago
Florida deputies have been accused of punching and dragging a Black man from his car during a traffic stop in February after a video of the incident went viral and sparked a nationwide outrage, as civil rights lawyers condemned the sheriff's department in Jacksonville, Florida.
The footage shows William McNeil Jr, 22, recording the video as he sat in the driver's seat asking to speak to Jacksonville deputies' supervisor after deputies pulled him over. He's heard asking questions about why he was stopped when the authorities broke the glass of the window, punched him in the face and pulled him from the car and again punched him before pitting him to the ground.

Local media in the US reported about the video on Monday and Tuesday after McNeil posted the footage on social media. However, Jacksonville Sheriff TK Waters warned the public against 'rushing to a judgement' as he said that there's more to the story than the mobile phone video recorded by McNeil that went viral online. Waters said sheriffs asked McNeil several times to come out of his car.
Jacksonville police say officers did not violate criminal law during the violent traffic stop of William McNeil Jr. — despite disturbing footage showing him punched and dragged. An internal investigation is underway to determine if the officers violated department policy.

Civil rights group Black Lives Matter and McNeil's lawyers have said that the video suggests police brutality. 'This should not have happened. But the police have never treated Black people like human beings,' Black Lives Matter said on X.
The State Attorney's Office in Florida said that none of the deputies violated criminal law as Sheriff Waters told reporters that a review of the incident was ongoing. Informing about action taken against deputies, Waters said D. Bowers, the officer who broke the car window and punched McNeil, has been stripped of his law enforcement authority till the outcome of the review.
McNeil was arrested on February 19 and charged with resisting arrest, marijuana possession, driving with a suspended license, not wearing a seatbelt and not having headlights in bad weather, court records cited by ABC News showed.

Social media companies not liable for 2022 Buffalo mass shooting, New York court rules

Several social media companies should not be held liable for helping an avowed white supremacist who killed 10 Black people in 2022 at a Buffalo, New York grocery store, a divided New York state appeals court ruled on Friday. Reversing a lower court ruling, the state Appellate Division in Rochester said defendants including Meta Platforms' Facebook and Instagram, Google's YouTube, and Reddit were entitled to immunity under a federal law that protects online platforms from liability over user content. The case arose from Payton Gendron's racially motivated mass shooting at Tops Friendly Markets on May 14, 2022. Relatives and representatives of victims, as well as store employees and customers who witnessed the attack, claimed the defendants' platforms were defective because they were designed to addict and radicalise users like Gendron. Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Other defendants included Alphabet, Discord, 4chan, Snap and Twitch, all of which Gendron used, the mid-level state appeals court said. Writing for a 3-2 majority, Justice Stephen Lindley said holding social media companies liable would undermine the intent behind Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act, to promote development of and competition on the internet while keeping government interference to a minimum. While condemning Gendron's conduct and "the vile content that motivated him to assassinate Black people simply because of the color of their skin," Lindley said a liability finding would "result in the end of the Internet as we know it." "Because social media companies that sort and display content would be subject to liability for every untruthful statement made on their platforms, the Internet would over time devolve into mere message boards," he wrote. Justices Tracey Bannister and Henry Nowak dissented, saying the defendants force-fed targeted content to keep users engaged, be it videos about cooking or puppies, or white nationalist vitriol. "Such conduct does not maintain the robust nature of Internet communication or preserve the vibrant and competitive free market that presently exists for the Internet contemplated by the protections of immunity," the judges wrote. Gendron pleaded guilty to state charges including murder and terrorism motivated by hate, and was sentenced in February 2023 to life in prison without parole. He faces related federal charges that could lead to the death penalty. Questioning of potential jurors in that case is scheduled to begin in August 2026, court records show.

'White couple' not the only ones hurt in Cincinnati attack? Claims of a third person surface

Violence broke out in downtown Cincinnati, amid the ongoing Cincinnati Music Festival, formerly known as the Cincinnati Jazz Fest, with videos showing a group beating a man and a woman. The incident in Cincinnati, where the man and woman were beaten, took place at the intersection of West Fourth Street and Elm Street. Image for representation(Pexels) While police have taken cognizance of the clips and said they are investigating the matter, which left two people injured, now a new video appears to show that there was a third victim. The incident, where the man and woman were beaten, took place at the intersection of West Fourth Street and Elm Street. What does the new video show? The new video, shared by Charlie Kirk – co founder of Turning Point USA – shows a man on the streets of what he claims to be Cincinnati. This man is attacked from behind by what appears to be another Black person. He is hit in the face and goes to ground immediately. He is then dragged by his legs and dropped in front of a vehicle on the road. The man then manages to get back on his feet. Sharing the video, Kirk, who is a conservative political activist, said 'I sure hope the police are in the process of arresting all of these criminals so the DA can throw the book at each and every one of them.' Again, the video does not show the events leading up to the altercation, and it remains unclear if this man is related to the other two white people who were on the receiving end of violence. What authorities said about the attack Speaking about the clips where the couple were shown getting beaten, Cincinnati police chief Terri Theetge told WLWT that the incident was in no way related to the music festival. Further, the police chief noted that a verbal altercation had broken out among some of the individuals seen on the video, which eventually escalated to outright violence. 'I am in complete disgust waking up to the viral video many of you have now seen. The behavior displayed is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable. Our investigative team is working diligently to identify every individual involved in causing harm,' the top cop said.
