Three Indians seized in Mali during militant attacks
NEW DELHI: Three Indians working in Mali were kidnapped from a cement factory during a spate of militant attacks this week in the troubled west African nation, New Delhi's foreign ministry said.
The men were seized Tuesday (July 1) when "a group of armed assailants carried out a coordinated attack at the factory premises" of the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, the main city in Mali's western region, the ministry said in a statement late Wednesday.
It said the gunmen "forcibly took three Indian nationals as hostages".
It added the Indian embassy in Bamako was in "close and constant communication" with Mali's government, as well as "the family members of the abducted Indian nationals".
India did not give details about the attackers, or say if it was in contact with them.
However, it said that "many military and government installations at multiple locations of western and central Mali were attacked by terrorists on 01 July 2025".
Since 2012, Mali has been battling an Islamist insurgency that erupted in the north, swept the country and spilled over into neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger.
The junta-led nation is deeply troubled by groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, as well as separatist movements and criminal gangs. - AFP

According to intelligence gathered by the Special Branch's Counter Terrorism Division (E8), the group, known as Gerakan Militan Radikal Bangladesh, had been actively raising funds and recruiting members with the intention of supporting IS. 'We are still determining the total amount collected. We believe the funds were gathered through membership fees and donations,' Mohd Khalid said at Bukit Aman yesterday. The group, which had been operating in Malaysia for about a year, also aimed to send members to Syria to fight alongside IS forces. 'We believe they spread their ideology and recruited members through social media and messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram,' he said. The IGP said the group's WhatsApp network included between 100 to 150 Bangladeshi nationals, though not all were active members. No Malaysians were involved. Each recruit was reportedly required to pay an annual membership fee of RM500, while additional donations were made at the discretion of members. The funds were transferred using various e-wallet apps and international remittance services to Bangladesh, Mohd Khalid added. The group specifically targeted Bangladeshi migrants working in Malaysia, including labourers, factory workers, as well as those in other sectors, for recruitment. Prospective members underwent a screening process and were required to take a bai'ah or oath of allegiance before being accepted into the cell. Asked if the group had links to other IS cells in the region, Mohd Khalid said investigations were ongoing. 'We are working with our counterparts in other countries and with Interpol to uncover their terror network,' he said. Mohd Khalid also said that investigations found no immediate plans by the group to launch attacks in Malaysia as their focus was on recruitment and spreading IS ideology. 'The spread of extremist ideology within the migrant community poses a real risk of subversive activity, which could tarnish the country's international diplomatic standing. 'There will be no compromise when it comes to national security. Each action is aimed at protecting the public from terrorism threats,' he said. The militant cell was taken down in a massive operation carried out by E8 in three phases between April 24 and June 21. A total of 36 Bangladeshi men, aged between 25 and 35, were arrested in raids across Johor and Selangor, including the group's leader. Of those arrested, five have been charged in court, 15 handed over to the Immigration Department, and 16 remain under investigation under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

Body with gunshot wounds left at hospital, police probe shooting at petrol station
JOHOR BARU: Police are investigating a shooting incident at a petrol station in Gelang Patah, Iskandar Puteri, and the discovery of a man's body left at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) early yesterday morning. Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said authorities were alerted to the case at 1.40am, when a man's body with multiple gunshot wounds was left at HSA without any identification documents. "Based on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, the deceased was dropped off by two people, currently being identified, using a dark-coloured car. "Fingerprint matching identified the deceased as a 42-year-old Indian man from Sungai Petani, Kedah, with four previous criminal records. "A post-mortem conducted by the medical officer confirmed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen," he said in a statement tonight. Kumar said initial investigations showed that shortly before the discovery, at around 12.12am, a suspected robbery-motivated attack had taken place at the petrol station in Gelang Patah. During the incident, a group of men armed with machetes attacked another group, one of whom was armed with a pistol, resulting in gunfire. Based on intelligence, at 7pm the same day, police from the Johor contingent's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters arrested two local men and one Indian national, aged between 30 and 40, in the Dang Wangi area, Kuala Lumpur. "Items seized included a Glock 19 pistol, a firearm licence book and ammunition, a magazine loaded with six 9mm bullets, a black Honda Accord, and spent shell casings. "One of the suspects works as a personal bodyguard, and initial checks confirmed he holds a firearm licence. "However, further investigations will be conducted to determine the legitimacy of the firearm ownership," he said. All three suspects have been remanded for seven days from July 4 to 10 to facilitate ongoing investigations, including determining the deceased's connection with the suspects and both incidents. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, Section 148 for rioting with weapons, and Section 39 of the Firearms Act 1960 for discharging a firearm outside a shooting range. "Efforts are ongoing to track down other suspects still at large.
