Malaysian authorities dismantle Islamic State-linked funding network

KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian authorities have dismantled an Islamic State-linked funding network operating in the country, which mainly relied on Bangladeshi nationals working in Malaysia, Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail said on Friday.
According to Bernama, Mohd Khalid told a press briefing that the group collected funds by charging an annual membership fee, as well as other voluntary contributions based on members' financial means.
The group's members were working in labor sectors such as factories, construction sites, and petrol stations across Malaysia.
"The funds collected were then transferred abroad using e-wallet applications and international money transfer services," he said, adding that no Malaysians were found to be involved.
Mohd Khalid added that the group also used social media platforms and messaging apps to recruit new members.

KOTA BHARU, July 6 — The presence of dozens of illegal crossings along the Kelantan-Thailand border has raised serious national security concerns, said Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan. He emphasised that Kelantan's border is an integral part of Malaysia's international boundary with Thailand and must be protected with utmost vigilance. 'The border spans approximately 105 kilometres, with most of it covering Sungai Golok, which separates Kelantan from Thailand's Narathiwat province. 'There are only three official entry points, namely Rantau Panjang, Bukit Bunga and Pengkalan Kubor. However, behind these checkpoints lie dozens of illegal crossings frequently used for cross-border activities,' he said in a statement on his official Facebook page today. Mohamed Fadzli also noted that the region's geography and close familial ties between communities on both sides of the border further heighten its vulnerability to security threats. In light of this, the state government stressed the need to strengthen border enforcement through increased personnel deployment, enhanced security assets and coordinated efforts among all relevant agencies. He added that the state government is fully committed to working together to ensure the nation's borders remain secure. BRICS a new frontier for Malaysian businesses, says Anwar
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil: Malaysian companies must be willing to explore new markets and trading opportunities overseas, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said they must not solely rely on traditional markets, but instead venture into new ones. Anwar said platforms like the BRICS offer enormous opportunities and praised Malaysian companies Petronas and Yinson Production for their successful ventures in Brazil. Anwar, who is here at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, said Lula was surprised to see Malaysian companies doing business in the country. "I mentioned Yinson and Petronas to him, and their role in Brazil. He was surprised and asked for more details," he said at a dinner hosted by Yinson Production here. Also present were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Yinson Holdings Bhd executive chairman Lim Han Weng. Yinson, an independent owner and operator of floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, has three projects in Brazil since 2023, namely FPSO Anna Nery, FPSO Maria Quiteria and FPSO Atlanta. Petronas has ventured into oil production in Brazil and last year opened its petrol station as well. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that although Malaysia's biggest market and source of investment is the United States and China, there are opportunities beyond them. Anwar said he has asked Zafrul to facilitate and offer assistance to Malaysian companies doing business in Brazil. Brazil has not only shown its strength as a voice of the third world, but has also become an important economic power, he said. In his meeting with Lula da Silva this morning, Anwar said they discussed various issues of importance between the two countries. Anwar said Lula has accepted his invitation to visit Malaysia during the Asean Summit in October. "He wants to bring key ministers and business groups to Malaysia. There will be a special conference with both of us jointly addressing the event," he said. Malaysia participated in the BRICS Leaders' Summit as a partner country and as Asean chair 2025. It officially became a BRICS partner country on Jan 1, 2025. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil increased by 14.6% to RM20.35bil (US$4.38bil) in 2024, rising from RM17.43bil recorded in 2023. Police arrest three Chinese women for paying RM8,700 hotel bill with counterfeit cash
KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Three female China nationals were arrested after they tried to pay for hotel rooms using counterfeit RM100 banknotes on Thursday. Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said the women, 18 to 47, used 87 fake RM100 banknotes to pay a hotel bill of RM8,700. 'During the arrests, police seized 87 fake RM100 banknotes, along with one RM50 and RM20 note each, along with two Lous Vuitton bags, hotel room access cards and three iPhones,' he said in a statement yesterday. He added that investigation papers have been opened under Section 498B of the Penal Code and the suspects have been remanded for six days till July 9. He advised the public to be cautious about banknotes and to report any suspected counterfeit banknotes to the police of Bank Negara Malaysia immediately. — Bernama
