Five injured as express bus crashes into three vehicles on Ranau-Tamparuli road

RANAU: Five people were injured after an express bus crashed into three other vehicles in an accident at Km15 of the Ranau-Tamparuli Road here last night. The incident, which occurred at around 10pm, involved an express bus carrying 22 passengers, a driver and a conductor who were travelling from Kota Kinabalu to Semporna. The bus was believed to have been speeding and overtaking on a double line before colliding with a Perodua Ativa, a Proton Saga, and a trailer truck ahead. District police chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said preliminary investigations revealed that the 65-year-old bus driver had made a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and sideswiped the right side of a Perodua Ativa driven by a 30-year-old man. "The bus then rammed into the rear of a Proton Saga driven by a 51-year-old man, causing it to be pushed forward into the back of the trailer in front," he said. "Five people were injured: the bus driver, the Proton Saga driver, and three express bus passengers — a woman and two men. All injured victims were treated at Ranau Hospital," he said when contacted today. He added that the drivers of the Perodua Ativa and the trailer truck were unharmed. "Blood and urine tests will be conducted on the bus driver to check for the presence of alcohol or illicit substances. "Checks also revealed the bus driver has three outstanding summonses. "The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving causing an accident," he said. A team from the Ranau Fire and Rescue Station was also deployed to the scene to assist in extricating trapped victims. Earlier last night, dashcam footage went viral showing the express bus veering into the opposite lane and nearly hitting other vehicles. Another viral clip showed the same bus entering the wrong lane at the Kubis Roundabout in Kundasang.

Police clarify viral video of officer stopping after motorcycle crash

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has denied claims that a traffic police officer did not stop his motorcycle after sideswiping another rider, causing the latter to fall onto the road. Subang Jaya police chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said the officer, who was riding a BMW motorcycle on official duty in Subang Jaya, had stopped 30 metres from the scene to avoid endangering other road users. He stated that the actual situation was contrary to a 17-second video clip that went viral on Facebook at 6.50 pm yesterday, which alleged that the officer did not stop after sideswiping a Honda ADV motorcycle on the Subang-Kelana Jaya Link. 'The officer also assisted the victim together with members of the public before he was taken to Shah Alam Hospital for treatment,' he said in a statement today. Wan Azlan said a preliminary investigation revealed that the accident occurred when the BMW motorcycle, which was travelling in the right lane, switched to the left lane and collided with the Honda motorcycle that was in the middle lane. He said the collision caused the 20-year-old Honda rider to fall to the left side of the road, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987. Members of the public with information on the incident are urged to contact Subang Jaya Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division officer, Insp Fatin Husna Khairuzzaman at 017-3012621. - Bernama
