Data shows Threads approaching X's daily app user numbers

The Star5 days ago
SAN FRANCISCO, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Instagram Threads, a new app from Meta, is catching up to X in terms of mobile app users, according to new data from market intelligence provider Similarweb.
In June 2025, Threads' mobile app for iOS and Android saw 115.1 million daily active users, representing 127.8 percent year-on-year growth, while X reached 132 million daily actives, as its year-on-year growth declined by 15.2 percent.
The Meta-owned social network saw 15.3 million U.S. daily active users on iOS and Android compared with 22.9 million for X.
However, the new data suggests that Threads could become a more significant competitor for X across iOS and Android, as X still has a huge advantage on the web.
Similarweb found that X's worldwide daily web visits are well ahead of Threads', with the former seeing 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide in June 2025, compared with just 6.9 million for Threads.
Threads has 350 million monthly active users, according to Meta's latest earnings report. X is no longer required to share metrics publicly as a private company. Its owner Elon Musk last year claimed that X has 600 million monthly active users.

Elon Musk says his new AI model 'better than PhD level in everything'

LOS ANGELES: Elon Musk says his xAI company's latest AI model Grok 4 is 'better than PhD level in everything.' Describing the latest model as 'the smartest AI in the world' at its launch, the billionaire SpaceX and Tesla boss said it had received 100 times more training than the Grok 2 version, which was replaced by Grok 3 in February. 'It is remarkable to see how quickly artificial intelligence is evolving,' said Musk, saying the new model would achieve near-perfect results in graduate exams in nearly every subject and expected the first 'watchable half hour' of television produced by AI by the end of the year. 'Grok 4 is smarter than nearly all graduate students in all subjects simultaneously.' Describing the current time as the 'intelligence big bang', he admitted Grok 4 'may lack common sense' but it might create new technology 'as soon as this year.' 'The most important thing for any AI is to be truth-seeking… You can instil the right values to be truthful, honourable and the values you want to instil in a child you hope to grow up to be incredibly powerful,' he said. The announcement comes in the wake of anti-Semitic commentary from the Grok 3 chatbot, which included praise of Adolf Hitler . On Wednesday, the Grok's X account posted: 'We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts.' Some experts have said Musk has attempted to steer away from other chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, which is considered 'woke'. In June, he invited X users to help train the chatbot with 'divisive facts' which he described as 'things that are politically incorrect, but nonetheless factually true.' On Wednesday, Linda Yaccarino said she was stepping down two years after Musk hired her to run X, formerly Twitter, which he bought for US$44bil (RM187.26bil) in late 2022. – dpa/Tribune News Service

Paris prosecutor contacts police as probe into social media platform X advances

PARIS (Reuters) -The Paris public prosecutor's office said on Friday it had contacted police as it advanced its probe launched earlier in the year against Elon Musk's X social media platform over alleged algorithmic bias. The investigations will focus on suspicion of "tampering with the operation of an automated data processing system as part of an organized gang and the fraudulent extraction of data from an organized automated data processing system," it said. This comes after the cybercrime unit of the Paris public prosecutor's office had received in January 2025 two reports from a member of parliament and a senior official of a French public institution that concerned the alleged use of X's algorithm for foreign interference. Exclusive-Meta won't tweak pay-or-consent model further despite risk of EU fines, sources say

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Meta Platforms is very unlikely to offer more changes to its pay-or-consent model, meaning it is almost certain to be hit by fresh EU antitrust charges and hefty daily fines, people with direct knowledge of the matter said on Friday. The European Commission last month warned Meta of possible daily fines after being told that the U.S. social media giant would only make limited changes to its model to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act. The Facebook owner was hit with a 200-million-euro ($234 million) fine in April after the EU antitrust enforcer said its pay-or-consent model breached the DMA from when it was introduced in November 2023 to November 2024. Meta had tweaked the model in November 2024 to use less personal data for targeted advertising, which prompted additional EU scrutiny and the subsequent Commission comments in June. The DMA seeks to curb the power of Big Tech via a list of dos and don'ts. Meta will not propose additional changes unless circumstances change, the people with direct knowledge of the matter said on Friday. That in turn will likely result in fresh EU antitrust charges in the coming weeks and daily fines following shortly, of as much as 5% of Meta's average daily worldwide turnover starting from June 27, one of the sources said, although a final decision has yet to be made. Meta declined to comment and pointed to previous statements where it said it is confident that it complies with the DMA, that its range of choices to Europeans go beyond the DMA's requirements and that the Commission is discriminating against its business model. The Commission declined to comment. ($1 = 0.8553 euros) (Reporting by Foo Yun Chee; Editing by Susan Fenton)
