Planned EV Battery Plant Is a ‘Death Sentence' for Uncontacted Indonesian Tribe

On Sunday, June 29, Indonesia will break ground on a $6 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery plant on Halmahera, the largest of the Maluku islands. The facility will mine the island's abundant nickel reserves and manufacture batteries on-site to reduce production costs in Indonesia, but a watchdog warns it could decimate an uncontacted tribe. The Hongana Manyawa—whose name means 'people of the forest' in their language—are one of the last nomadic hunter-gatherer peoples in Indonesia, according to Survival International. Some 3,500 of them live within Halmahera's rainforest, and roughly 500 remain uncontacted. Over the last several years, Indonesia's booming nickel-mining industry has deforested more than 13,000 acres (5,000 hectares) of Halmahera's tropical forests, destroying the Hongana Manyawa's homeland. This country is now the world's largest nickel producer, and its latest money grab poses a grave threat to the Hongana Manyawa, advocacy groups warn. 'This announcement is a death sentence for the uncontacted Hongana Manyawa,' said Caroline Pearce, head of Survival International, in a statement. 'Their home—the land that is theirs under international law—is being brazenly seized and destroyed to cater to global industries and global consumption.' 'Nickel and other mega-projects are often launched under the banner of green development but leave behind a trail of social and environmental harm,' said Brad Adams, Executive Director at Climate Rights International, in a statement. 'Communities are repressed, forests are cleared, and pollution goes unaddressed with impunity. This is a chance for the Prabowo government to show that it has learned from those failures.' The new plant, financially backed by China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), will integrate multiple components of EV battery production. Mining operations, smelting, nickel extraction, and production of precursors and cathodes will all take place on-site, according to the Indonesian news agency ANTARA. The project is one of 18 downstream industrial projects—valued at nearly $45 billion—that will break ground in Indonesia, ANTARA reports. According to a 2024 Survival International report, at least 19 mining companies are operating on the uncontacted Hongana Manyawa's land, including the largest and second-largest nickel mines in the world. Most of these facilities are mining nickel, and together, they span about 40% of the uncontacted people's territory. The Halmahera nickel rush is part of the Indonesian government's efforts to feed the global nickel demand for EV batteries. As of last year, the country accounted for 51% of the world's nickel mine production, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. Scrutiny from environmentalists recently drove Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to cancel four nickel mining permits on the neighboring islands of Raja Ampat. 'The President has a special concern to ensure Raja Ampat remains a world-class tourist attraction and protect its sustainability,' Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia told reporters earlier this month. In 2024, more than 30,000 tourists visited these islands, contributing roughly $9.25 million to locally generated revenue, according to The Jakarta Post. The same can't be said for Halmahera, which lacks sufficient infrastructure to support tourism. Still, advocates hope that the Indonesian government will take similar steps to protect Halmahera and its people. 'The Indonesian government has shown it's prepared to cancel nickel mining to save tourism; it must now also do so to stop an appalling human rights atrocity,' Pearce said. 'By acting now and establishing a no-go zone for mining on the territory of the uncontacted Hongana Manyawa people, the government can prevent their annihilation.' This tribe isn't alone. A 2022 study found that 54% of critical mineral mining projects for essential components, like the nickel used in EV batteries, are located on or near indigenous lands. Of those projects, 29% impact lands that indigenous peoples manage or conserve. While the Western world may see the EV industry as a climate solution, its impact on rainforests—and the people that call them home—threatens to outweigh its benefits.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Indonesia's Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway has surpassed 10 million passenger trips since it began operations in 2023. The 142-kilometer rail line connects Jakarta with Bandung in West Java, cutting a three-hour drive to a 46 minute-train journey. Newsweek contacted the network owners, Kereta Cepat Indonesia China, for more information on the milestone via email. Why It Matters The high-speed rail link, a joint venture under China's Belt and Road Initiative, is Indonesia's first infrastructure project of this kind. China leads the world in high-speed rail development and the project symbolizes deepening infrastructure cooperation between the countries. Getty Images What to Know The high-speed railway is now operating 62 daily train services, up from 14 during its initial phase, accommodating more than 37,000 passengers per day. Trains operate at speeds of up to 220 miles per hour. Some trains have recorded occupancy rates as high as 99.6 percent, particularly during peak travel seasons like Ramadan and Christmas, according to China Railway International reports seen by The Star. Construction of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway began in 2015 after delays caused by land acquisition and funding concerns. Built at an estimated cost of $7.3 billion, the project is operated by the joint Sino-Indonesian Kereta Cepat Indonesia China consortium. Funding was secured through a combination of equity and loans from the China Development Bank, with Indonesia holding a minority stake. The railway's operation is overseen by the Sino-Indonesian Operation and Maintenance Consortium. Key operational practices, like emergency preparedness and earthquake resilience protocols, are adapted from Chinese high-speed rail standards. As of June 2025, more than 600 Indonesian personnel have completed railway training programs, with 263 certified by Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation. These include 34 train drivers who now independently operate trains under Chinese mentorship, a foundational step toward full local operation. What People Are Saying Danang Parikesit, professor of transport policy at Gajah Mada University, told Voice of America that the partnership between Indonesia and China was very important for future infrastructure expansion, saying: "Indonesia's long-term development plans will be able to cut logistical costs by half. "That's why we need international partners to invest and improve our highways, railways system, ports and airports as well as other infrastructure like gas pipes and floating storage. "Diversifying and extending partnership with other countries will provide a better base for our future transportation development. So I believe we need to balance between the urgent need for our transport investment and to diversify our partnership, taking the best of what different countries can offer." What's Next According to China Railway International, both Indonesian and Chinese rail partners are committed to making the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway a model of regional transportation efficiency. Plans for future phases or extensions of the high-speed network remain under discussion, with the current focus on solidifying stable operations and local workforce development.

The AI Talent Crisis: Why Companies Are Looking In The Wrong Places

Nicole Zheng is the Chief Business Officer at which powers companies with elite tech talent and ready-to-deploy AI solutions. Last year, generative AI officially entered Gartner's famed 'Trough of Disillusionment'—a rite of passage for any emerging technology. While most enterprise companies are eager to embrace AI, with some saving hundreds of millions of dollars through strategic use cases, most fail to progress past the pilot phase. And one of the main barriers for many corporate leaders is talent. "The biggest AI talent shortage has created a $134.8 billion market opportunity," said João (Joe) Moura, CEO of crewAI. "Many focus solely on technical roles, but overlook a crucial segment: Traditional approaches emphasize Deep ML engineering or Ph.D.s," which implies barriers for talent lacking those qualifications. It's a challenge my company has heard repeatedly when consulting with enterprise leaders on their generative AI strategy, and we wanted to understand those challenges more deeply. So, we surveyed 250 senior tech leaders responsible for AI initiatives. Our research confirmed those challenges: "While 96% of tech leaders plan to increase AI investments in 2025, only 36% have successfully deployed AI to production." The gap isn't due to a lack of enthusiasm or budget—it's a talent problem. In fact, 85% of tech leaders have delayed critical AI initiatives due to talent shortages. But I believe there's another reason for this talent crisis: Most companies are looking for AI talent in all the wrong places, using outdated hiring approaches that fundamentally clash with the pace of AI innovation. Why Traditional Hiring Is Hindering, Not Helping When we asked these senior AI leaders how long it takes to hire top product and engineering talent, the answers were eye-opening: 67% said "it takes 4+ months to hire top engineering talent." This hiring timeline is completely mismatched with the whiplash pace of AI development; the technology is evolving every few weeks, bringing new opportunities to drive value for customers and employees alike. By the time most organizations have hired the talent they initially sought, that person's skills may already be outdated. It's like hiring horses while the Model T is accelerating in the fast lane. Adopting The 'T-Shaped' Talent Model One way organizations can succeed is by taking a different approach: a 'T-shaped' model that integrates specialized freelance talent with a smaller, core team of full-time employees. Picture the letter T: Your vertical stem is made up of core, full-time engineers who know your systems inside and out. The horizontal bar is made up of specialized contractors who bring targeted expertise where you need it. Why does this approach work? As GenAI is still nascent, your full-time engineers carry the burden of maintaining your core platform while learning the latest agentic system design techniques and tools. It can be next to impossible to succeed with the landscape evolving daily. By contrast, independent AI/ML engineers can bring experience from dozens of deployments across different companies—often choosing independence precisely for this opportunity. You're not just hiring skills; you're hiring the experience gained from rapid innovation cycles. Factors That Contribute To T-Shaped Model Effectiveness 1. The Shift In The Technical Talent Market: The freelance economy has evolved dramatically from its gig-economy origins. Today's freelance talent marketplace includes elite, specialized professionals who've chosen to go independent thanks to the autonomy, flexibility and financial upside that it can provide. For top AI talent, a big part of the appeal is getting to choose the specific projects and problems that interest them the most, instead of being put in a 'golden cage' and paid to literally do nothing. 2. The Innovation And Deployment Boost: Fractional talent can boost innovation capabilities and accelerate your road map. Look for freelance AI specialists who have experience with deployments at multiple companies; they should have more knowledge of the pitfalls that lurk around the corner and be able to help your company avoid them. 3. Cost Efficiency: By bringing in specialized fractional talent for the specific stages of development that you need them for, you can deploy your capital and resources more effectively. 4. A Startup Mindset: I've found that for most organizations—particularly those in non-tech industries—GenAI requires a monumental mindset shift. While IT teams excel at buying and integrating software for systems of record, capitalizing on GenAI's full capabilities often means adopting a mindset of leveraging your company's data and automating human workflows to realize new value. Choosing team members who can contribute out-of-the-box thinking as well as AI engineering expertise can help you achieve this mindset. 5. Flexibility: This model can also help solve flexibility challenges. Instead of trying to hire full-time employees for specific technical needs, focus on building fluid teams that can adapt as quickly as the technology. The Importance Of Collaboration A common pitfall in attempting the T-shaped model is to treat independent talent as outsiders, but this isn't outsourcing. The trick is to embed specialists into your existing teams, having them code and participate in standups right alongside your core engineers. In my experience, this approach can deliver more than project outcomes; it can also allow your core team to upskill through direct collaboration. Conclusion The AI talent crisis may seem daunting, but it's far from insurmountable. You don't need to compete with Netflix to hire that million-dollar AI engineer; instead, consider adopting a more flexible approach to how you build your teams.
