Tamil Nadu govt schools to review academic performance during SMC meet on July 25
Headmasters and teachers have been instructed to review their school's performance in the State-Level Achievement Survey (SLAS) during the meeting and present their respective block, district, and state-level rankings. They are also expected to discuss strategies to improve student learning outcomes.
Under the Targeted Help for Improving Remediation and Academic Nurturing (Thiran) initiative, students who are yet to achieve basic learning outcomes have been enrolled in special remedial classes. SMC members must be informed about these students and monitor their progress. After six months, the committee can assess improvements in their performance.
The agenda also includes updates on the implementation of Ennum Ezhuthum, donations received through Namma School and Namma Oor Palli initiatives, inclusive education efforts, measures to prevent dropouts, awareness of Pocso Act, and career guidance and sports activities.
According to the school education department, SMCs across the state have passed 1,92,543 resolutions since their reconstitution in August 2024. These were categorised based on the level of action required – school, district, or state.
Of these, 1,50,421 resolutions (78%) have been acted upon. To streamline the redressal process, the department has launched a dedicated application to upload resolutions. SMCs can now classify and submit them under six categories, including emergency, welfare schemes, and infrastructure.

August 8 last date to apply for ‘Best Teacher' awards in Andhra Pradesh
The School Education Department will select teachers for the State Best Teacher Awards–2025 under three categories. In a statement on Friday, Director of School Education V. Vijay Rama Raju informed that guidelines and timelines for the selection process have been communicated to Regional Joint Directors, District Educational Officers, and Additional Project Coordinators of Samagra Shiksha. Teachers working in all government-run and aided schools, excluding those under private management, are eligible to apply, provided they have completed at least 10 years of service. The selection will be made under three categories: self-nomination, recommendation by five fellow teachers, and performance-based recognition through the LEAP app. The last date for submission of applications at the respective offices of the Divisional Deputy Educational Officers is August 8.

Urea stock will arrive on Friday: Nandyal Collector
District Collector Rajakumari Gania has said the district will receive 3,500 metric tonnes of urea by Friday (August 1 ) and asked the officials to make the same available to the farmers. She said already 1,100 metric tonnes of urea is available in the district. Taking stock of the available of urea and other issues with officials in the collectorate on Thursday (July 31), Ms. Rajakumari Gania has asked officials to create awareness among the farmers not to use urea in excess. She asked officials to complete the process of e-KYC of crops in a transparent manner and ensure that every farmer completes e-KYC and insures their crop. The Collector said the deficit rainfall in June month had led to depleting of groundwater in Pyapili, Dhone and Kolimigundla mandals. She noted that the groundwater levels have fell to 24.23 metres in Pyapili mandal, 23.46 metres in Dhone and 26.67 metres in Kolimigunda mandal and asked officials to take up water conservation methods in these mandals. Ms. Rajakumari Gania wanted officials to create awareness among the people on water conservation methods. The Collector said micro watershed programme will be taken up through 18 projects in the 16 mandals of the district. The Collector asked officials to prepare a report of the projects to be taken for forwarding the same to the Central government through the State government. Ms Rajakumari Gania said the State government is spending crores of rupees on watershed programmes like digging farm ponds, dugout ponds, small and big circulation tanks and others and asked officials to take up these programmes in a proper manner for achieving better results. She asked the officials of irrigation department, ground water department, NABARD and others to coordinate and prepare plans for taking up watershed programmes. Ms Rajakumari Gania said they have sent proposals for taking up repair, renovation and restoration (RRR) initiative for ayacut strengthening by spending ₹138 crore.

Call for govt-run special school in Madurai grows
Madurai: Even as the number of children with developmental disabilities steadily rises in Madurai, the district lacks a single govt-run special school. With no dedicated public infrastructure in place, parents and activists have urged authorities to establish inclusive infrastructure dedicated to children with special needs (CWSN). Deepa V, who came to Madurai eight years ago with her autistic son Avinash (name changed), said that while he is now 20 years and doing well, the city still doesn't offer enough opportunities for children like him. "There was no space for him to meet children like himself—no place to play or feel like he belonged," she said, calling for a dedicated sensory park and a publicly funded special school so families from nearby villages can also benefit. Currently, the responsibility of care and education for CWSN falls primarily on parents, particularly mothers, said A Chandrasekaran, founder of the Madurai Group Living Foundation, which runs a special needs park on corporation land since 2018. "There are only three private special schools with more than 100 students and about 20 with fewer than 25. But they are expensive," he said.
