State launches initiative to bridge learning gap among students
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu school education department on Thursday launched the 'Thiran' (Targeted Help for Improving Remediation and Academic Nurturing) initiative to bridge learning gaps among students studying in Classes VI to IX. Deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin released the workbook for remedial coaching under the scheme. According to the plan, teachers will select students who are struggling to read, write, and do basic maths in upper primary and give them focused coaching for six months. The recent state-level learning achievement survey conducted among Classes III, V, and VIII students revealed that students studying in Class VIII lacked reading, writing, and basic maths skills. "In Aug, all students will learn basic reading, writing, and maths prescribed for lower classes. After conducting a survey, students who need remedial coaching will be selected, and they will be given focused coaching. Their progress will be assessed every month," an official said. This remedial coaching will improve the quality of education as all students will attain minimum learning levels," another official said. The state council for educational research and training (SCERT) has prepared the workbook for students and a handbook for teachers under this initiative. Udhayanidhi also launched another scheme, TNSPARK (Tamil Nadu School Programme for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Knowledge of Online Tools), to introduce artificial intelligence and coding to students studying in Classes VI to IX. As many as 2,457 newly recruited secondary grade teachers received their appointment orders at the event. School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, school education secretary B Chandra Mohan, school education director S Kannappan, elementary education director P A Naresh and others participated in the event.

2,400 recruited by Teachers Recruitment Board; Udhayanidhi Stalin distributes appointment orders
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday launched the distribution of appointment orders to over 2,400 candidates who have been selected by Teachers Recruitment Board. During an event in the Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium in Chennai, the Deputy CM also released new textbooks prepared under THIRAN (Targeted Help for Improving Remediation and Academic Nurturing). He also released the textbooks released by TNSPARK (Tamil Nadu School Programme for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools). School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi read out a message from the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin who has been hospitalised since Monday last. Tamil Nadu govt schools to review academic performance during SMC meet on July 25
CHENNAI: The Samagra Shiksha (Integrated Education Department) has directed all government schools in Tamil Nadu to conduct the first School Management Committee (SMC) meeting of the academic year on July 25. Headmasters and teachers have been instructed to review their school's performance in the State-Level Achievement Survey (SLAS) during the meeting and present their respective block, district, and state-level rankings. They are also expected to discuss strategies to improve student learning outcomes. Under the Targeted Help for Improving Remediation and Academic Nurturing (Thiran) initiative, students who are yet to achieve basic learning outcomes have been enrolled in special remedial classes. SMC members must be informed about these students and monitor their progress. After six months, the committee can assess improvements in their performance. The agenda also includes updates on the implementation of Ennum Ezhuthum, donations received through Namma School and Namma Oor Palli initiatives, inclusive education efforts, measures to prevent dropouts, awareness of Pocso Act, and career guidance and sports activities. According to the school education department, SMCs across the state have passed 1,92,543 resolutions since their reconstitution in August 2024. These were categorised based on the level of action required – school, district, or state. Of these, 1,50,421 resolutions (78%) have been acted upon. To streamline the redressal process, the department has launched a dedicated application to upload resolutions. SMCs can now classify and submit them under six categories, including emergency, welfare schemes, and infrastructure.

School curriculum, textbooks to be revamped over next three years in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Friday told the Assembly that curriculum and textbooks in schools will be revamped to equip students with essential skills and prepare them for the future. In the first phase, Rs 7 crore has been allocated for the initiative, he said while speaking on the demands for grants for the department. According to officials, the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will form a committee to review the syllabus, with the revamp expected to be completed over the next three years. The last major revision took place between 2018 and 2020 to help students prepare for competitive exams such as NEET. At the time, new textbooks were introduced for classes 1, 6, 9, and 11 in 2018-19 and for the remaining classes in 2019-20. The syllabus was updated for classes 1 to 10 after seven years and for higher secondary after 12 years. The syllabus which was introduced also adopted the 'learning outcome approach' in order to prevent rote learning. 'A comprehensive revamp every five years is essential to incorporate changes across various fields in textbooks. While the syllabus is updated annually, a full review will ensure alignment with higher education requirements and address any gaps or impediments in the current syllabus,' a senior official said. The school education department will introduce artificial intelligence, coding, fundamentals of computer science and online tools as part of the syllabus for classes 6 to 9 from the next academic year. Poyyamozhi also announced a new initiative named THIRAN (Targeted Help for Improving Remediation and Academic Nurturing) at a cost of `19 crore to enhance proficiency in Tamil, English and maths among 13 lakh students enrolled in classes 6 to 8. The government is yet to take a decision on distribution of laptops. However, smart classrooms and hi-tech labs have been set up in all schools to serve the same purpose. The department is reviewing whether to appoint one physical education teacher for every 250 or 500 students. In July last, the department issued an order fixing one PET for every 700 students. Poyyamozhi also added that the books to be procured for libraries have been finalised and the distribution will begin soon. On mobile phone addiction among students, he said steps such as restricting social media for those under 14 years is a national-level policy decision.
