Uttarkashi SP inspects landslide zones on Yamunotri NH, reviews safety measures amid heavy rains
'SP Uttarkashi Sarita Dobhal inspected various landslide zones on the Yamunotri National Highway and reviewed and assessed the safety management today, ' posted Uttarkashi Police, Uttarakhand on X.
Earlier in the day, the Yamunotri National Highway was blocked at two places between Silai Band and Ojri due to parts of the road being washed out, according to officials.
In a post on X, Uttarkashi Police wrote, 'The Yamunotri National Highway is blocked at two places between Silai Band and Ojri due to some parts of the highway being washed out. It may take time to restore the route.'
The police further stated that the highway between Brahmkal and Mahargaon was also blocked due to debris.
According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the average rainfall recorded in Tehri Garhwal on Sunday was 79.2 mm.
Heavy rain disrupted the electricity supply in Agrakhaal, Chamba, Jakhindhar, and Dughamandar areas. The water supply was also affected in the Chamba block.
Meanwhile, officials stated that the 24-hour suspension of the Char Dham Yatra has been lifted. The ban was imposed following a heavy rain alert.
The Yatra was suspended after a cloudburst near Barkot triggered a massive landslide, killing two workers and leaving seven others missing.
Earlier, the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi district, which had been damaged by a landslide, was repaired. However, search operations for the missing individuals are still underway.
Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya confirmed to ANI that 'repairs have been completed on the washout before Silai Band, and that efforts are ongoing to restore other damaged portions of the road.'
'The washout that happened due to a cloud burst before Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri road of the district has been repaired and the road has been made smooth, while the work of making the other washout smooth is going on,' Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya said. (ANI)

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 1 (ANI): Amid increasing concern over the surge in cloudbursts and flashfloods in Himachal Pradesh during the monsoon season, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh said the Centre is working on implementing area-specific and more accurate weather forecasting systems to help mitigate disaster risk and improve preparedness. The Union Minister was in Shimla to formally announce the appointment of Rajeev Bindal as the new President of the Himachal Pradesh BJP unit for a third term. Speaking to reporters, Jitendra Singh acknowledged that while weather prediction systems have significantly improved over the years, cloudburst forecasting remains one of the biggest scientific challenges, particularly in hilly terrain such as Himachal Pradesh. 'The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Shimla is one of the oldest in the country, and we have a robust forecasting system in place. But I must also say that while forecasting overall has improved remarkably, the ability to predict cloudbursts is still limited. It remains a complex phenomenon due to the highly localised and intense nature of these events,' he said. The Minister said that the government has taken several steps in recent years to strengthen local-level weather monitoring and prediction capabilities. 'We are actively working to enhance the forecasting system further, and soon, we will have area-specific forecasts, tailored to particular regions and vulnerable zones,' Singh announced. 'We have already started village-wise forecasting for the benefit of farmers, which will gradually be expanded to other sectors, including disaster management,' he said. He also disclosed that the number of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) across the hill state and other parts of the country would be increased substantially. 'The installation of more automatic weather systems will significantly improve data collection and forecast accuracy. You will soon see a noticeable difference in the precision and timeliness of weather alerts,' Singh added. The Minister's remarks come at a time when Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a sharp increase in extreme weather events, including cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods, many of which have led to loss of life and property in recent years. These events have triggered calls for better early warning systems and more localised weather alerts to assist local administration and residents in taking timely action. Singh's assurance of more granular weather forecasting also aligns with the Centre's broader push to mainstream science and technology into disaster risk reduction strategies. The Union government is expected to roll out the upgraded systems in phases over the coming months, starting with high-risk districts. (ANI)

Total sown area this monsoon: Kharif sowing jumps 11.3% on strong monsoon; rice and pulses lead acreage surge
NEW DELHI: The total sown area for Kharif crops has increased by 11.3% year-on-year as of June 27, 2025, aided by an active southwest monsoon and robust rainfall, according to a report by Bank of Baroda. Rainfall was recorded at 9% above the Long Period Average (LPA) till June 30. The report said the increase in acreage was especially strong in pulses and rice, which grew by 37.2% and 47.3%, respectively. Within the pulses category, urad and moong beans registered notable gains. Oilseeds like soybean and groundnut also saw higher sowing. However, cotton and jute & mesta posted a decline in acreage by 8.9% and 2.7% respectively, ANI reported. Regionally, 19 of the 36 sub-divisions (49% of India) received normal to excess rainfall. Northwestern (42%) and Central (25%) regions reported above-normal precipitation, including states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Normal rainfall was also seen in parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the report added. The alert comes amid ongoing monsoon activity, with widespread rainfall reported across much of the state in the past 24 hours. Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the IMD's Meteorological Centre in Shimla, shared rainfall data and the upcoming forecast. 'In the last 24 hours, most parts of Himachal Pradesh witnessed moderate rainfall. However, isolated areas in districts like Mandi, Kangra, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Hamirpur, and Chamba received heavy downpours,' Sharma told ANI.
