Disc Award conferred by outgoing Himachal DGP withdrawn
Shimla, May 31 (PTI) The order to confer the Director General of Police (DGP) Disc Award on 172 police officers in recognition of their outstanding work in 2024 was withdrawn on Saturday.
This came after DGP Atul Verma, who issued this order, retired on Saturday.
Verma, a 1991-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, served as the DGP since 2024.
The order to confer the Disc Award was withdrawn and the post in this regard shared on Facebook was also removed.
Verma, who proceeded on leave earlier on Wednesday along with Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Onkar Sharma and Shimla Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, returned on Friday.
The three were on Tuesday asked to proceed on leave after a meeting held here by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu with senior officials.
The discussion during the meeting focused on the issue related to the high court's order to transfer Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) chief engineer Vimal Negi's death case to the CBI.
This came after the DGP submitted a status report to the high court, questioning the impartiality of the SIT probe.
Sukhu had expressed his displeasure over the ongoing tussle between Verma and Gandhi and also with the additional chief secretary for bypassing the advocate general's office while submitting his fact-finding report.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday made a shocking statement on his social media platform Truth Social after the announcement of 25 per cent tariffs against India and threatened an additional "penalty" for importing Russian oil. "I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India; their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world." Trump said. Trump signed a fresh executive order imposing revised tariffs for 70 countries, including India and Pakistan, in a move that is expected to strain global trade relations further. Tariffs imposed on India's neighbouring countries are less than India's 25 per cent, except for Myanmar at 40 per cent. The new tariffs for Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, and Sri Lanka are 19%, 15%, 20%, 19%, 15%, and 20%, respectively. The new tariffs, outlined in a sweeping order signed on Friday (IST), will come into effect from 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on August 7. The executive order states that the revised tariffs are aimed at addressing the national emergency declared earlier under Executive Order 14257. Trump noted that he had "recently received, among other things", new information and had determined it "necessary and appropriate" to impose additional ad valorem duties on the goods of certain trading partners. These new duties will replace those previously imposed under the same order, as amended. Other countries on which the US imposed tariffs are higher than India include Iraq (35 per cent), Laos (40 per cent), Libya (30 per cent), Serbia (35 per cent), South Africa (30 per cent), Switzerland (39 per cent), and Syria (41 per cent). Countries that imposed lower tariffs than India include the UK (10 per cent), Vietnam (20 per cent), Taiwan (20 per cent ), and South Korea (15 per cent), to name a few. The order by Trump stated, "I have determined that it is necessary and appropriate to deal with the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14257 by imposing additional ad valorem duties on goods of certain trading partners".The executive order further directs that these changes will apply to goods entering the US for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses on or after the effective date. However, goods already in transit before the deadline, loaded on vessels and en route before August 7 and entering the US before October 5, 2025, will not be subjected to the revised duties but will instead continue under the previously applicable tariff rates under the amended Executive Order 14257. The government told the Parliament on Thursday that it is examining the impact of the recent events and will take all necessary steps to safeguard the national interest. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made a statement in the lower House of Parliament a day after Trump announced the tariff. He later made a similar statement in the Rajya Sabha. Goyal said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is holding talks with exporters, industries and all stakeholders and gathering information on their assessment of this issue.

CM orders depts to not demolish a single slum in Delhi
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced an immediate halt to demolition drives in the Capital's slum clusters and promised that all future removals, if unavoidable, will be accompanied by advance rehabilitation. (PTI) Stressing that the city's slum dwellers will not be 'harassed anymore', she said that 50,000 old and dilapidated flats built for the economically weaker sections (EWS) will be renovated and allotted to slum dwellers. 'No slum will be removed without providing alternative housing first,' Gupta said, adding that if required, the government would amend the existing slum policy or even approach court to ensure protection for the poor. 'The pain of slum dwellers will not be ignored,' she said. Gupta's announcement comes amid mounting political tension over demolition drives in Delhi's informal settlements since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in February. While the demolitions – carried out by agencies like the DDA, Railways and municipal bodies – were largely in compliance with court orders, they sparked criticism from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which accused the BJP of breaking its pre-election promise to protect slum residents. Among the major drives were the June 1 demolition of 300 homes in Jangpura's Madrasi Camp, the June 17 razing of 200 structures in Ashok Vihar, and the June 18 clearance of 25 homes in Gokalpuri. The BJP defended the actions as necessary for reclaiming public land, but Gupta's announcement will come as a reassurance for residents. 'The slums in Delhi are an inseparable part of the city. My government is committed to giving them rightful recognition,' Gupta said, alleging that opposition parties had reduced slum dwellers to a vote bank. She said her government is holding meetings across departments to chalk out a plan for permanent housing and that all departments have been instructed to immediately halt any ongoing demolition activity. She also promised that if rules need to be changed to protect the rights of slum residents, her government will not hesitate to do so. A key part of this effort, she said, is the revival of 50,000 unallotted flats constructed for the poor years ago under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). These flats, which became dilapidated after lying vacant for years, will now be renovated and allotted to slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U). Gupta accused previous government of wasting the opportunity to house the poor. 'Despite receiving crores under JNNURM, the flats were never allocated. Departments like DUSIB and DSIIDC were on the verge of returning ₹732 crore to the central government,' she said. 'Now, with approval from the Union housing ministry, this money will be used to renovate the flats and house slum dwellers.' She said the dispute between the Delhi and central governments over whether the flats should be rented out or directly allotted to slum dwellers had stalled progress for years. Her government, she added, is now committed to direct allocation. 'In these neglected settlements, there was no drinking water, no drainage, no roads. Past governments left them to alcoholism and despair. My government will restore their dignity and give them the pride of being true citizens of Delhi,' she said. Responding to the allegation, AAP's Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj said CM Gupta and the BJP have been bluffing the slum residents in the city. 'If Rekha Gupta is serious about slum rehabilitation, she should ask the central government and its agencies — such as the DDA, railways, and the land and development department — to withdraw the cases against these JJ clusters in the high court and Supreme Court,' Bharadwaj said in a statement.

Pakistan-linked arms rackets busted in Amritsar, 9 arrested
Amritsar: In coordinated operations targeting Pakistan-linked cross-border arms trafficking, Punjab Police on Friday announced the arrest of nine individuals — including a juvenile — and the seizure of 13 sophisticated pistols in a major crackdown on smuggling modules. Director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the counter-intelligence (CI) team in Amritsar had dismantled a Pakistan-backed network, arresting five operatives and recovering six pistols — four 9mm Glock handguns and two .30-bore pistols — along with magazines and ammunition. The arrested individuals were Jagroop Singh of Dhun, Navdeep Singh of Patti Lahian Di, Gurlal Singh of Rajoke, and Joban Singh of Patti Mana Ki — all from Tarn Taran district — along with Arshdeep Singh of Shaliwal in Amritsar district. Police believe they were acting on instructions from a Pakistan-based smuggler known as Rana, tasked with delivering arms to criminal gangs in Punjab to destabilise the sensitive border region. In a separate but parallel development, Amritsar police commissionerate uncovered two more smuggling modules, arresting four more suspects, including a 17-year-old, and seizing seven pistols. Police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the weapons haul included two Glock pistols, four .30-bore Star pistols, one .32-bore pistol, six live cartridges, and a motorcycle used for consignment delivery. Those arrested in the commissionerate operation were Sikanderjeet Singh (19) of Bhagwanpura in Tarn Taran; Pradeep Singh 'Babbal' (43) of Antaryami Colony, Amritsar; Jarnail Singh (34) of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Amritsar; and the unnamed juvenile from Tarn Taran. Preliminary investigations revealed that some suspects lived near the international border and retrieved drone-dropped weapons from designated coordinates. Bhullar said the weapons were linked to gang rivalries and intended to spark unrest. Two of the suspects, Pradeep and Jarnail, were associates of the late gangster Ravneet Singh 'Sonu Mota', who had rivalries with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang. "The weapons recovered were supplied by Pakistan-based handlers and handed over to the accused prior to Sonu Mota's death," Bhullar said, adding that the timely seizure had likely prevented a major criminal incident. Separate cases have been registered under the Arms Act at the State Special Operation Cell (Amritsar), Gate Hakima police station, and B-Division police station. Authorities concerned say the operations are part of an intensified strategy to dismantle transnational criminal networks operating along Punjab's section of the international border.
