Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 Text Size: L/R: Dexter, Coral, Lau, Michael and Josephine. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has marked a significant milestone with several of its business leaders appointed to top national-level positions in the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC). The latest reshuffle at national level sees MCCC Sabah President Datuk Dexter Lau elected as Chairman of the MCCC National Business Sectors Committee, the first Sabahan to hold the influential post. Dexter, who also helms the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce, is now tasked with leading policy direction across sectors and building high-impact collaborations between Malaysian businesses and Chinese counterparts. 'This role is a responsibility, not just a recognition. It gives Sabah a wider voice nationally and allows us to bring more attention, resources, and investment to the East Malaysian region,' he said. He said the Sabah team's elevation reflects a growing appreciation of the state's strategic potential and its readiness to contribute to national economic direction. Alongside Dexter, business leader Coral Chia was appointed Vice Chairperson of the Business Sectors Committee. A long-time MCCC national council member, she is expected to work closely with Dexter in strengthening the committee's output. Her appointment also continues the legacy of her mother, Datuk See Meng Geok, who currently serves as MCCC Vice President and has long played an advisory role in national matters. Meanwhile, MCCC Sabah Founding President and Honorary Life Adviser Datuk Lau Kok Sing retains his position as National Affairs Advisor, continuing to offer strategic counsel on policy and institutional development. Also appointed to the national council is Datuk Michael Chin, another former MCCC Sabah President, who now serves as a National Vice President. His years of experience in bilateral business engagement are seen as key to further deepening enterprise-level links. Adding legal strength to the national team is Josephine Wan Wen Hadikusumo, appointed as National Internal Auditor. A senior Sabah-based legal practitioner, her role will focus on governance and compliance within the organisation. Dexter said the appointments mark a turning point for Sabah in terms of visibility and contribution on the national stage. 'We will continue to speak up for East Malaysia and ensure we are fully part of Malaysia's economic conversations,' he said. The MCCC is a key platform facilitating Malaysia-China trade, with branches across the country and deep linkages to industries, entrepreneurs, and policymakers in both nations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Jo Ghani: US' 19 per cent tariff on Malaysian palm oil competitive
PASIR GUDANG: The 19 per cent export tariff imposed by the United States (US) on Malaysian commodities, including palm oil, is considered competitive and not burdensome compared to other Asean countries, said Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Johari said Malaysia remained in a good competitive position as the tariff rate was among the lowest in the region. "The 19 per cent tariff imposed by the US on Malaysia is among the lowest in Asean countries. Even Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, is subject to the same tariff rate. If we look at the context of palm oil commodities, Indonesia is the largest producer, number one in the world, and we are number two. But Indonesia is also subject to 19 per cent like Malaysia, so there is no problem, meaning we have a 'fair fight'," he said. He was speaking at a press conference after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno Division Delegates Conference today. Also present was Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is also an Umno vice-president and Pasir Gudang Umno division chief. Malaysia was subjected to the 19 per cent tariff based on an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. The document for the reciprocal tariff rate adjustment, signed by Trump on July 31, 2025, has been uploaded to the White House website. Previously, Trump set a 25 per cent tariff for Malaysia, but it is understood that a phone conversation between him and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday may have been a factor in the tariff reduction. Johari, who is also performing the duties of the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, added that there had been no significant issues with the country's commodity exports due to the tariff rate. "Malaysia's commodity exports are still able to compete fairly in the international market. I don't see any problems so far with the 19 per cent tariff imposed by the US on our country's commodity exports," he said.

Singapore Tourism assess Sabah cruise potential
Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Singapore Tourism Board officials were recently here to visit while exploring Sabah's potential as a regular stop for international cruise ships travelling around Southeast Asia. The delegation from the Singapore Tourism Board (SGTB) and Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS) met with Suria Capital Holdings Berhad to discuss integrating Sabah into regional cruise itineraries currently dominated by established Southeast Asian ports. Discussions centred on infrastructure development needed to accommodate large cruise vessels, with Suria Capital proposing a dedicated International Cruise Terminal as part of its Jesselton Docklands waterfront redevelopment project. 'Kota Kinabalu is uniquely positioned with its rich cultural heritage, pristine natural landscapes and growing tourism infrastructure,' said Suria Capital Group Managing Director Datuk Ng Kiat Min. 'We see great potential in establishing new cruise itineraries connecting Singapore and East Malaysia. 'These collaborations offer not only regional economic benefits but also opportunities for cruise passengers to enjoy authentic and memorable shore excursions that highlight the best of Borneo,' she said. The proposed terminal would be designed to handle growing passenger volumes and meet international cruise facility standards, addressing current limitations that prevent larger vessels from docking at Kota Kinabalu Port. Singapore officials shared regional cruise industry trends and operational insights during the visit, while Sabah Tourism Board representatives presented the State's tourism attractions and outlined plans under the Visit Sabah 2026 campaign. The initiative aims to place Sabah as a premier cruise destination in the region, potentially establishing regular routes that would bring thousands of international tourists to explore the State's wildlife, cultural sites and natural attractions. The visiting delegation included representatives from SATS-Creuers Cruise Services, the terminal operator for MBCCS, one of Asia's leading cruise terminals and a key gateway for international cruise passengers arriving in Singapore, comprising Chief Executive Officer Gregory Tan, Head of Business Development and Marketing Jann How, Special Projects Head Jacqueline Ng and Operations Manager Muhd Rusyaidi. They were joined by SGTB officials, namely Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei International Group Senior Manager Ting Lee Lee and Cruise Industry Development Policy and Planning Group Senior Manager Jocelyn Heng. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 300 attend Sabah Malaysia Co-Investment Fund roadshow
Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 Text Size: Phoong engaged with SC-registered ECF and P2P platform operators and heard first-hand success stories from companies funded through MyCIF. Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysia Co-Investment Fund (MyCIF) roadshow, to introduce micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Sabah to equity crowdfunding (ECF) and peer-to-peer (P2P) financing as options to support business expansion and working capital needs drew about 300 participants from government agencies, business groups, venture capital, private equity and local MSMEs. The programme was organised by the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) with support from Invest Sabah Berhad and included networking sessions, breakout discussions, and exhibitions by SC-registered ECF and P2P platform operators. Attendees heard directly from companies that had raised funds through MyCIF-supported financing. MyCIF was launched under the Ministry of Finance as part of the 2019 Federal Budget and is managed by the SC. To date, it has co-invested in more than 70,000 fundraising campaigns involving over 9,500 MSMEs nationwide. As of 2024, the fund surpassed RM1 billion in total co-investments, with a 1:4 co-investment ratio under its General Scheme, and 1:2 for targeted schemes such as Food Security and Environmental & Social Impact. SC Chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi said the Sabah roadshow was part of MyCIF's broader national outreach to increase awareness of alternative financing among businesses outside the Klang Valley. 'It provides entrepreneurs with practical exposure to how ECF and P2P platforms operate, and how MyCIF participation enhances access to capital,' he said. He emphasised that under Budget 2025, the government has allocated RM40 million to support the continued use of these platforms by MSMEs. Invest Sabah Chief Executive Officer Dr Firdausi Suffian said the collaboration with SC offered an opportunity to connect Sabah businesses with financing channels they may not have previously considered. 'This roadshow enables local entrepreneurs to gain information and contacts that could help support their business growth,' he said. According to SC, MyCIF has helped attract more than RM6 billion in total private and public investments, with private investors contributing 4.1 times the amount co-invested by the fund. The fund is aimed at improving access to non-traditional financing for MSMEs across all sectors in Malaysia. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
