Black Ops 6 Warzone Season 5 release date and patch notes, featuring new maps and weapons

Daily Mirror5 days ago
Call of Duty is about to get a whole lot bigger with Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 5 release date now confirmed alongside the full patch notes for the new content drop
Call of Duty enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting more content to enhance their Black Ops 6 and Warzone gaming experience, and fortunately, the next significant content drop is just around the corner.

The wait has seemed endless as players have navigated through a sea of whimsical cel-shaded skins and disappointing content updates in both Black Ops 6 and Warzone. However, it appears we're finally shifting gears with the arrival of a new Call of Duty season. The Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 5 release date is fast approaching, promising new POI changes, map additions and the conclusion to this year's Zombies narrative in the much-anticipated new map, Reckoning. It's fair to say, it's about time. With the Battlefield 6 Multiplayer reveal countdown officially underway, it's crucial that the game steps up its game as the classic shooter franchise makes a comeback, potentially threatening Call of Duty's top spot in the genre.

Gamers are certainly ready for more content to keep them entertained until the launch of Black Ops 7, which was unveiled during this year's summer showcase season. The introduction of the Combat Bow, Boxing Gloves and the return of some classic maps are set to do just that. So, when exactly can we expect the Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 5 release date? Here's what you need to know.

Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 5 release date
The release date for Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 5 is scheduled for Thursday, August 7 at 9am PDT / 12pm EDT / 5pm BST, as officially announced in the latest Call of Duty blog post.
Gamers are in for a treat as new content is set to launch, following a period where players felt neglected with only American dad and Beavis and Butthead characters for company. The introduction of Reckoning is expected to cause quite a stir within the Zombies community, promising an exhilarating experience.
Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 5 patch notes
In a recent Call of Duty blog post, we've been given a sneak peek at what's to come, revealing a plethora of additions and changes that players can eagerly anticipate. Here's the lowdown on the upcoming content:

Multiplayer maps
Runway (Launch)
Brand-New, Core, 6v6, Medium-Sized
A Pantheon mole attempts their escape via the Arzak Provincial Airport. All hell breaks loose as the Rogue Black Ops team pursues one of their final targets. Wreckage and luggage litter the tarmac, flames licking the sides of the terminal and black smoke rising from the fire in the airport control tower.
Traverse the destroyed aircraft, its fuselage blasted to bits, the Plane's nose poking through the Food Court inside. The damage extends into shipping and receiving, a parked Tank threatening movement on the ground. In the center, battle erupts around the Baggage Claim. Watch out for enemies coming in through the moving conveyor belt.

Exchange (Launch)
Brand-New, Strike, 6v6/2v2, Small-Sized
Rogue Black Ops pursues a mole attempting to strike a deal in a vibrant Avalon marketplace. Crash the party and unleash havoc on this small-sized three-lane map centered around the Deli, its roof adorned with a marble statue of a mythic sea god.
Get behind the counters of the Deli, Bar, and Fruit Stall for added defense when engaging enemies down the middle. To avoid the center, take the south path through the Seafood market and Butcher or step up to the northern Terrace. Both paths feature a shortcut to the middle at their halfway point, keeping the action moving fast throughout the match.

World Motor Dynasty (W.M.D.) (Launch)
Remaster, Core, 6v6, Medium-Sized
From its inception as a Nova 6 processing laboratory first introduced in the original Call of Duty: Black Ops, W.M.D. returns in a reimagined form as an Italian luxury car manufacturer in Avalon. Trade the snow of the original map for an overcast day around the Autofiorno plant, using your memories of the prior map to help navigate the larger area of operations.
The grounds include the Paint Shop, Administration, Car Parts, Showroom, Design, and Assembly, with the wide outer Road circling around the buildings. Seek out upper vantage points to get above the action, including the infamous Silos where sharpshooters vie for their view over the east side of the map.

Jackpot (Mid-Season)
Inspired by Black Ops 4, Core, 6v6, Medium-Sized
Deploy to the Casino Luttazzi and slot yourself into a power position for a chance to win big. Using elements of the original 'Casino' map from Black Ops 4, Beenox has extensively reworked the map with new layout sections and artistic direction, partially inspired by the 'High Rollers' mission from the Black Ops 6 Campaign.
The central Bar offers refreshments and cover plus a prime view of the Stage. Get some fresh air on the Gazebo with views over the water or bask in the shade of the Terrace. With opulence at every turn, this newly reopened Avalon Casino is sure to attract a huge amount of wealth. Bet on the win with all you've got when the map arrives at mid-season.

Multiplayer modes
Compete across a variety of new and returning modes, including the new Aim High game mode, Snipers Only, and Cranked Moshpit throughout the season's first half, followed by Cranked Demolition, Ransack, and Blueprint Gunfight mid-season.
Aim High (Launch)
New Mode (Modifier)
Aim high to survive across a variety of game modes—including Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, and Kill Confirmed— where headshots land instant eliminations while full body armor minimizes damage dealt anywhere below the neck. As a bonus, this headshot training is likely to hone your talents when unlocking Weapon Camos, as well as increasing the damage output against the undead when you jump over to Zombies.

Snipers Only (In-Season)
Returning Mode
Hardscope? Quickscope? Lucky shot? Take your pick in the Snipers Only playlist. Regardless of the game mode, all Operators spawn with a Sniper Rifle and only a Sniper Rifle. Equipment, Secondary Weapons, Field Upgrades, Scorestreaks, and your Dedicated Melee Weapon are restricted. You still get your pick of Perks, so choose wisely and hone your marksman skills to perfection.
Cranked Moshpit (In-Season)
Returning Mode
Crank up the adrenaline in this Moshpit where eliminations give you speed Perks and activate a bomb countdown on your Operator. Chain eliminations to refresh the bomb timer and earn twice the score for your team. If you do get taken out, start the process again and keep slaying to maintain your momentum.

Cranked Demolition (Mid-Season)
New Mode (LTM)
Make Demolition even more explosive with Cranked mechanics thrown into the mix! Alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites while managing your Cranked timer and chaining eliminations to stay alive.
Ransack (Mid-Season)

Get rich quick or die trying as Ransack returns in the mid-season. Score points by looting gold bars from piles around the map and off fallen enemies. Fill your inventory and then deposit the gold in your team's deposit box before the enemy can take you out and nab your riches.
Blueprint Gunfight (Mid-Season)
Returning Mode
Bring some style to your Gunfight matches in the mid-season Blueprint Gunfight playlist, giving players the chance to try out a variety of new Weapon Blueprints while gunning for victory.

Additional Gameplay Content
The Combat Bow makes an explosive appearance, a low-cost Scorestreak last seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, capable of inflicting rapid and accurate high damage projectile hits.
New Scorestreak (MP, ZM, Mid-Season)
Scorestreak: Combat Bow (Launch)
Type: Lethal

Score: 500
Mastery Badges: Yes
Step out of the jungle and become a lone action hero, firing single-shot, explosive-tipped arrows that explode on impact, dealing incendiary damage to all enemies caught in its trajectory and leaving a trail of fire in its wake.

Zombies
Looming over the once-sleepy settlement of Liberty Falls, the Project Janus Headquarters—three edifices known locally as Janus Towers— now teeters on the verge of collapse. Constructed between [redacted] and [redacted], this vast and vertical facility is separated into [redacted], with Aetherium slowly being released into [redacted], enormous reactors [redacted] limitless power, but at a price.
The towers' systems appear to be critically damaged, and total failure is imminent. Stabilizing the Aether Reactors seems to be the initial overriding goal, before even greater threats must be faced.

Prepare to confront cosmic chaos in the last chapter of the Black Ops 6 Zombies narrative, launching at the start of Season 05 on August 7 at 9AM PST.
Assuming no comms interference, expect Peck, Ravenov, and Strauss to provide valuable support, with Raptor One always skybound to exfil should the situation go even more sideways. But what of Dr. Pericles Panos, who sacrificed Alpha Team to return himself from the Dark Aether? And Security Chief John Blanchard, last seen pursuing Panos into the Towers? Then there's both S.A.M. and Director Richtofen…
Reckoning
From the moment you step into the now debris-strewn lobby, it soon becomes clear that the towers have seen better days. Laboratories, computing and research, offices, and more secretive chambers may be accessed by more novel means of transportation, [redacted] parachutes, [redacted] anti-gravity personnel launchers to redacted] Aether vents [redacted] with low gravity [redacted] robot assembly [redacted] attunement accelerator [redacted].

[[FURTHER EXPLORATORY CONTENTS HAVE BEEN LOST VIA AN UNANTICIPATED DATA INTRUSION, AND ALL TOWER BLUEPRINT RECORDS EXPUNGED]]
Automaton Alert: New Elite Enemy: Uber Klaus
The secret Research and Development program of Project Janus appears to have been more evolved than originally thought, developing many more robots in the Klaus Assembly Lab than first anticipated. The greatest of these threats is the Uber Klaus – a murderous automaton encased in a toughened, bulky exoskeleton – that maintains a cocky attitude, lethal efficiency, and super strength, all directed at newly-programmed threats.
Enemy takedown tactics are unknown at this point, though combat is likely to be focused on disrupting the Uber Klaus form's heavy shielding and avoiding its melee attacks. Once the exoskeleton is broken, the Uber Klaus Core will eject, revealing its second deadly form.

The Uber Klaus Core increases in agility, sacrificing defenses for less lumbering locomotion and flying capabilities thanks to rocket-powered hover boots. It continues to employ energy-based, arm-mounted launchers (avoid at all costs), while its defensive, tesla-coil shield can prevent your incoming attacks.
Other Entities: Red Mist Descends, Robots Dispatched
Emergency enforcement protocols may have already been triggered across all three towers, resulting in periodic robot battalions—known as Kommando Klaus— homing in on perceived intruders. Preceded by a strange red mist, these automated enemies have had their higher functions disconnected and self-destruct sequences activated and should be dispatched with swift and focused aggression.
Mechanical threats are only one of the expected adversaries; reports of zombified Project Janus security and administrative personnel, the remains of scientists, hazmat crews, and even experimental mutations are confirmed to be active within the towers.

New Wonder Weapon: Gorgofex
Latest intel all but confirms Janus Towers may be hiding a new and grotesquely potent Wonder Weapon known as the Gorgofex. Partly charred experimentation notes discovered on microfiche indicate the existence of a 'bio-aetheric' armament.
Combining fungal, floral, and insectile traits to deliver precise impact damage and gravity-defying disruption in close quarters, glowing membranes on the weapon show hints of motion and circulation under the surface. The weapon seems to pulse and breathe, with a beating central heart-like organ that 'pumps' energy through the weapon. Due to the saturation of Dark Aether and other unknown energies, the weapon is said to emit faint psychic vibrations.
But how does it work?

The Gorgofex fires what appears to be a slug of Aether-based energy.
On impact, this inflicts a dense area of direct damage with a tight area of effect. The damage of the impact varies depending on whether the user charges the attack before release.
Shortly after impact, energy from a fully charged blast dissipates outward, inflicting damage in a wide area.
The dissipation seems to cause a focused temporary gravitational anomaly, catching and incapacitating enemies to float at just above head height.
More research is required, but it appears two additional variations have been uncovered...

Main Quest and Quest Rewards: The assault on Janus Towers and the Reckoning Main Quest go live at the start of Season 05 on Thursday, August 7 at 9AM PST. Ensure you complete the Main Quest to obtain the 'Blood, Sweat, an' Gears' Operator Skin for Grey (shown above), an intriguing Weapon Charm, multiple Calling Cards, and sizable XP rewards. Players who complete the Main Quest prior to the mid-season Directed Mode will earn a unique Calling Card variant.

Unstable Gravity: Due to experiments conducted in the , this chamber may experience fluctuating gravity, with projectile weaponry and movement affected during these intermittent gravitic anomalies.
Rapid Transportation: Teleporters: Using failsafe experimentation with Aetheric energy, Project Janus scientists have developed a means of instantly transporting organic and inorganic material between points with almost no fatalities reported. These devices work in attuned pairs, one acting as a transmitter and the other a receiver.
Rapid Transportation: Anti-Gravity Personnel Launchers: A novel and likely completely safe means of transport. Used in pairs, the launchers create a focused tunnel of gravity allowing the user the illusion of flight, and the ability to 'jump' from one location (such as a tower balcony or overlook) to another.

C.A.S.T.E.R. Turret: The Cognitive (and) Adaptive System (for) Target Elimination (and) Reinforcement Turret with armament and control panel components is a joint venture between the Project Janus Cognitive Science and Security Technology divisions. This wall-mounted automated cannon unleashes devastatingly powerful barrages of aetheric energy in quick bursts to neutralize threats. Update the turret with [redacted] nano-energy technology and [redacted].
Lore and Intel: Now in the epicenter of what could be a cataclysmic Dark Aether event, there's no time like the present to gather lore related to Reckoning in the form of Audio Logs, Documents, and Artifacts discovered throughout the map.
Additional gameplay content
Grief Mode: Reckoning (In-Season)
Outlast the undead... and your rivals as new Grief Arenas arrive in Reckoning. It's the 4v4 Zombies combat you know: two teams face the same zombified threat, but only one walks away.

Reckoning: Directed Mode (Mid-Season)
Let the in-game objectives guide you as Directed Mode arrives mid-season for Reckoning. As before, this version features guided progression with visible objectives to help you stay focused on the Main Quest with a unique Calling Card variant to earn! An official walkthrough of Reckoning Directed Mode — made by the same crew as our exhaustive GobbleGum Guide— will be available at mid-season to help you dig deeper into the culmination of the story and complete every objective, whether you're exploring solo or as a squad.
Returning LTM: Team Cranked (Mid-Season)
The fan-favorite Team Cranked mode returns in Season 05 with refreshed rewards! Your entire squad is tied to a single shared timer, and the moment any player takes down a zombie, the team enters the Cranked state, boosting abilities and starting a 30-second countdown that only zombie eliminations can refill. Survive a round, and that max time drops by one second, pushing the pace faster with every wave. Wall weapons? Gone. The Mystery Box is your sole supplier, but boosted Essence earnings while Cranked mean you'll have plenty of chances to swap Essence for random gear.
Every player is loaded out with the Time Stopper Field Upgrade, capable of pausing the team timer in a pinch, and there's a rare Time Extended Power-Up that increases the timer. Main Quests and Easter Eggs are active, offering deeper objectives alongside the relentless timer countdown.

New Support Scorestreak: Combat Bow (MP, ZM, Mid-Season)
Step away from the workbench and become a lone survivor, firing single-shot, explosive-tipped arrows that erupt on contact, scorching rotting flesh and igniting a blaze that immolates any stragglers too slow to shamble clear of its fiery trail.
Additional Field Upgrade: Mister Peeks (In-Season)
Available: Event Reward
Summon Mister Peeks to our reality to create chaos, as the deadly and distracting bunny busts out the moves and bashes undead brains to a raving disco beat.

Once Mister Peeks arrives in your hands, throw this hairy helper into the fray, and he gleefully attracts normal and Special enemies and attacks any undead within his wandering radius, savaging foes until they explode in a shower of bright confetti.
Mister Peeks: Major Augments
Research the following Augments to further customize this Field Upgrade.
Dance Party: Mister Peeks becomes the life of the party, attracting nearby zombies to him, before he detonates an Aether Pulse to thin out the crowd considerably.
Arcane Fury: Mister Peeks has become a master of the elements, enhancing his regular damage with a random Ammo Mod (with an Augment from that Ammo Mod).
Apex Hunter: Mister Peeks focuses all attacks on the strongest nearby enemy other than bosses. For example, Uber Klaus would be targeted over regular foes, with increased damage inflicted.

Mister Peeks: Minor Augments
Social Butterfly: Increase Mister Peeks' attraction radius.
Peeks' Favor: Mister Peeks is good to have around Mystery Box locations. Get a free box spin if you're near one during activation!
Party Animal: Increase Mister Peeks dance duration.
Warzone
Eyes on the Skies: Abyss Protocol Activated: Stadium Compromised
Recent intelligence indicates a massive disruption across Verdansk is imminent, as recon teams have confirmed the existence of a clandestine military base hidden within the sealed walls of the National Acropolis Arena. The extent of the threat remains unclear, though a weapon capable of large-scale destruction is expected to be unearthed within the vicinity.
All squads are recommended to assemble and begin explorations in preparation for a possible Stadium breach!

New Contract: Satellite Hijack (Launch Window, Week One)
Battle Royale, Battle Royale Casual Modes
Breach the stadium in possibly the most impressively explosive way possible as you and other enemy squads attempt race to complete the multi-step Satellite Hijack Contract. Infiltrate the Stadium by any means necessary, confirming the nefarious operations and hidden compound within.
This contract is only available during the first full week of the season, so don't miss your chance to engage in this important event! Secure the [redacted] to obtain a special reward; the [redacted], available to every member of your squad and usable during the rest of the match as well as permanently placed in your Gunsmith. Further Comms to follow.

Additional reports appear to indicate further and increasingly alarming [redacted], recommending additional attention to [redacted] as the [redacted] progresses.
Stadium Resurgence LTM (In-Season, Week Two)
36 players, 12-minute matches
Should Operators visit Verdansk during the second full week of Season 05, they may find entry to the Stadium is now viable, thanks to some light orbital remodeling, along with unlocked ground level entrances allowing full exploration into the clandestine compound. With all the recent explosive activity, the action is heating up again and the Stadium receives a focused Resurgence battle with a seven-circle collapse, along with Public Events and loot assembled for this rapid action mode.

Normal Resurgence rules apply: Maintain pressure, secure objectives, and gather resources — every action contributes to squad redeployment. Prioritize Contracts, eliminate hostiles, and stay mobile to accelerate the return of downed teammates.
Deadline LTM (Mid-Season)
Quads, 100 players, Players and AI
A deadline looms in this new Limited Time Mode where more than just eliminations keep you in the match! Jump in with your squad and amass as many points as you can between each Circle Collapse. Naturally, racking up eliminations—by dispatching both human and Bot Hostile Agents— is a key method of increasing your points total, but you're also rewarded with points by completing Contracts, looting supplies, and spending cash at Buy Stations.

Keep those points flowing: Though there are unlimited respawns for you and your team, as each Circle Collapse occurs, the lowest scoring squads are eliminated from the match, and there's an increase in the presence of Hostile Agents. Be prepared to fight for your spot! With each new gas circle, all scores are reset, so there's no resting on your early match laurels here; you need to constantly prove yourself by staying active and climbing up the score ranks again!
Remember in Deadline, it's not only about getting eliminations; every player can contribute to victory.

Playlist Update: Solos Moving into Season 05
In the Season 04 Reloaded blog, we shared initial results from our Call of Duty: Warzone Battle Royale Solos playlist test – where Casual Solos replaced Core Solos – to better understand how players engage with each experience. Our initial test was conducted to identify if Casual Solos could increase the waning popularity of the Core Solos experience. The test showed Casual Solos outperformed Core Solos by more than 3 to 1, with improvements in matchmaking quality, ping stability, and overall match health.
We have since completed a second phase of testing, running both Casual Solos and Core Solos side-by-side, which has allowed us to gather deeper regional data and assess how playlists affect the player experience across a global population.

Our second test showed similar results, with Casual Solos receiving 3X the number of daily users than Core Solos. The data also reveals that players who heavily favored the Core Solos playlist in Season 03 (before Casual Solos was added) significantly reduced their time in the mode when it returned in Season 04 Reloaded – spending just 25% of their total playtime in Core Solos.

Our teams continue to examine how playlist offerings work regionally. Here's how playlists will shift when Season 05 launches, in consideration of the data we've seen:
Both Core Solos and Casual Solos will be available globally on day one of the season
Within 48 hours playlists will be updated:
Core Solos will remain active in North America (NA) and Europe (EU) only
Casual Solos will continue to be available in all regions
In North America and Europe, Core Solos was marginally more sustainable than other regions in both phases of testing; however, the mode still suffered from match quality concerns (connection, match times) due to players preferring other available playlists. In other regions, Core Solos was unable to deliver acceptable match quality.

Casual Solos has proven itself to be the more approachable and globally sustainable mode. Keeping this mode live worldwide ensures that solo players everywhere have a healthy, high-quality match experience.
By tailoring playlists based on regional data, we're ensuring that every Call of Duty: Warzone player gets the best possible experience, regardless of location. This is the next step in refining how we build playlists that serve all Call of Duty: Warzone players. We'll continue to evaluate performance and feedback as Season 05 rolls out.

Games Inbox: Will Battlefield 6 outsell Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7?

The Tuesday letters page predicts an untimely end for Rare, as one reader fears there's no way to improve Starfield with a single expansion. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ One of kind I wonder if Battlefield 6 has any chance of actually outselling Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 or at least getting close. As has been said, it did get pretty close when it was at its highest and Call Of Duty was at its lowest, but that's just how it felt down on the ground, I don't know what the sales figures were. I don't want Call Of Duty to go away but I would like to see it lose a few rounds, get knocked down a few pegs, not only so Activision will put in more of an effort but so that other companies see that Call Of Duty is not undefeatable. We shouldn't have just one military shooter, just like we shouldn't have one football game or one racing game. Just a generation ago we had Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, and a bunch of others. Now all we've got is Forza Horizon and we haven't even had one of those new in a while. Everything is slowing down and facing less and less in the way of rivals. I feel it's better for everyone if there's proper competition for everything. Heathcliffe GC: Battlefield 4, from 2013, sold somewhere over 7 million copies. It's contemporary, Cally Of Duty: Ghosts, sold around 19 million copies. Ultimate doesn't play the game I don't know what's more tragic: what Rare has been reduced to nowadays (making DLC for a seven year old game and literally nothing else) or the fact that Microsoft thought it could make a couple of quid from selling merch reminding you of what the company used to be before they got hold of it. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. I think we all know why Gregg Mayles left Rare, just as everyone was being laid off, and it wasn't because he thought his job was done and everything was in safe hands. Even if they announced a new game tomorrow it would be five years, at a minimum, before it was out. Such is the tragic state of video game development today. I don't see the studio lasting that long though. If you see a bunch of devs leaving in the next few months that will be the sign that it's on its last legs. Wendel Top 10 What makes me wonder about these Xbox sales figures is what Microsoft must've been pretending to themselves for the two or three years of the Xbox Series X/S. Did they think they could turn things around or were they just trying to convince themselves that 'this is fine'. It's probably the second one and then they thought Game Pass would make up for it all, but wow… Xbox hardware is so dead. I was a little surprised to see that even the Xbox 360 didn't do that well. How does it compare in terms of all consoles? Benson GC: It's the ninth best-selling console of all time, just below the PlayStation 3 and just ahead of the PSP. In terms of only home consoles, it's seventh (or sixth if you don't count the Switch). Email your comments to: gamecentral@ Switch 1.5 I feel Metroid Prime 4 is getting dismissed a bit too much because it's a cross-gen game. It may have been designed as a Switch 1 game but I'm sure they knew about the Switch 2 long before it was made public. If you remember, when the first Metroid Prime 4 trailer came out everyone thought it was Switch 2 footage and Nintendo were secretly putting it out there to see if anyone noticed (and hoping people would think it looked better than it does on Switch 1). The point is, I think it will look at least as good as Mario Kart and Donkey Kong, while being something completely different making use of the mouse controls, which neither of those games do (which is the most obvious sign that they were never designed with the Switch 2 in mind). Metroid Prime 4 is the game I'm most excited about this year, regardless of format, and I'm sure other people will feel the same way once we get a Nintendo Direct on it. Somehow I doubt that will be true of Hyrule Warriors or Kirby Air Riders. Cubbie The lesson is: never try If Starfield comes out on PlayStation 5 within a hundred lightyears of GT 6 then you'll know that Microsoft purposefully did it in order to sink the franchise and not have to bother with it again. The annoying thing about the game is that if you had asked me beforehand I, even as a big Elder Scrolls and Fallout fan, would've said I'd definitely prefer a new IP to just another sequel. Then you see the end result and suddenly you're wishing people would never try anything new again. Obviously that's not true but I don't see any way a new expansion can improve Starfield enough to where it's worthwhile. If anything, the last one made it worse, so I'd just stop while they're ahead. Or only a little bit behind. Boggly Window display I agree with Limpton that Nintendo could handle their Switch 2 PR better but that to me is a completely different question from how arrogant and complacent they're being. They shouldn't have had that Partner Direct in July. Whether or not they had to for contractual reasons is open to speculation, but it was one of those things whose mere existence somehow made the platform less appealing. But that doesn't mean they've been caught nodding or that they've rushed things out. Nor does keeping their powder dry in terms of the longer term pipeline. I'm not going to be as aggressive as Adam was with his feedback but to be honest, I find it slightly shocking that a new console can launch with two proper big exclusives, that were generally very well received and the conclusion is still that the business is asleep at the wheel. Yes, you can be a bit deflated or disappointed when you try those games (although I note playing them hasn't even been a condition for some commentators). But if this is a question of effort, I completely reject the insistence that the Switch 2 has been in any way worse than the Switch 1. The main offence seems to be the absence of a game like Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, which was clearly fully made for the Wii U and sensibly sat on by Nintendo till the Switch's launch. But everything that's happened with console launches since as far back as the first Xbox should tell us a platform holder isn't likely to fully and exclusively dedicate the development of such a game to the launch of a console. I say 'isn't likely' because here we have Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza and, frankly, that borders on miraculous in comparison to what we've consistently had on the front of genuine exclusives with other consoles since the PlayStation 2 generation. The best of which I'd say was the PlayStation 5 with a Demon's Souls remake (which of course carries its own caveats) and Returnal, if you include that as launch window. At the very least, most of the games from the Switch 1 launch window rolled out by Taylor Moon either already have their own analogue on Switch 2 or they don't compare favourably with what's actually on offer this year. Especially when you include the upgrades for the two Zelda games and cross-gen games like Metroid Prime 4. I know this'll come across as an apologist rant, and if I'm being honest, I'd happily swap any short term release schedule in existence for one game like Breath Of The Wild. Plus, I'm not even fully convinced Metroid Prime 4 is going to be as good as I'd like. But to dismiss what has gone into the Switch 2's launch so far as low effort and arrogant does feel to me like little more than typical gamer entitlement mixed with an unhealthy degree of memory loss when it comes to modern console launches. I'm glad the commercial performance so far doesn't reflect that, especially since I think Bananza, in particular, is a much better game than its slightly mixed reception might indicate. Panda Retro Power I see this month's cover story for Retro Gamer is 40 years of the Amiga, so just bought a copy for myself, being a big Amiga fan. Andrew J. PS: I see you can give your opinion on physical and digital games on a new Nintendo Survey, I presume a response to some people not liking Game-Key Cards for Switch 2. I have just filled out the survey myself. Here is the survey if you want to fill it out. GC: We like that the cover is reminiscent of Amiga Power. Decent start I got a Switch 2 a couple of days after launch. While not without its launch fumbles I can't find anything to get mad at. Sourcing the console was easy and not the hell trying to get a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X was at launch and long after. The Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077 sitting somewhere between the PS4 Pro and Xbox Series S was a assuring demonstration of the hardware's potential. It does sound like the screen could of been a bit better. But having come from the OG Switch it's feels like, and is, a big improvement. The recent third party Direct was pretty lame but the presence of Outlaws, Cronos: The New Dawn, and Borderlands 4, it's already a much more encouraging picture for the Switch 2's third party support than the last four Nintendo home consoles have had. With announced third party games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, 007 First Light, and Elden Ring I'm genuinely scratching my head as to why people think it's this Nintendo console with the third party problem. Even discounting the games I've no interest in, like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the launch window looks good for me. The execution may have been slightly fumbled, but Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bonanza are fantastic. I also intend on getting Metroid Prime 4, Professor Layton And the New World of Steam, and Hades 2. I'm counting cross-gen, seeing as two of the best Switch launch period games, Zelda: Breath Of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, were too. The GameCube addition to Nintendo Switch Online is a treat and I have F-Zero GX and Zelda: The Wind Waker to play for the first time. Performance boosts are a big reason for me buying early this gen. I'm currently enjoying a second run of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom and picked up Bayonetta 3 to play for the first time, now it's frame rate is a solid 60fps on Switch 2. I would of liked maybe one more Switch 2 exclusive I'm interested in and something to really prove the mouse controls, although we'll see how that functions on Metroid Prime 4. Mario Kart World retailing for £75 raises legitimate concerns even with the caveats of it's cheaper bundled or bought digitally. Other than that though, decent. Simundo Inbox also-rans I have just started playing Wheel World and I love it. Beautifully chilled but occasionally reminiscent of Burnout. I've only played an hour or so and I'm really looking forward to sinking many more hours into it. A very pleasant surprise. Ed Very interesting insight into what goes on behind the scenes of rumours. Removing three games from the Direct seems extreme though. Why? Could they really not get 30 seconds of useable footage out of whatever it was? Nintendo gonna Nintendo. Battlefield 6 is already better than Call Of Duty in terms of one major feature

EA keeps saying all the right things, as fans approve of the latest annoucement for this year's Battlefield 6. While Call Of Duty has always been the dominant military shooter, EA's Battlefield series has come close to challenging it on occasion – even if those days are a while ago now. EA clearly wants this year's Battlefield 6 to renew the rivalry with Call Of Duty, including giving it an autumn launch window, and so far it seems to be working, with many Call Of Duty fans expressing an interest in jumping ship. But Battlefield fans don't necessarily want the series to be exactly the same as Call Of Duty, far from it (especially when it comes to potential crossover skins) and EA has just made clear another important difference. In a statement to PC Gamer, EA has confirmed that while Battlefield 6 sports a hefty file size of 80GB, that's only for the complete experience and you can actually pick and choose which portions of the game to download. For instance, if you only care about the single-player campaign, then you can download that part of the game without the online multiplayer. Or vice versa if you have zero interest in solo play. 'There will be a shared base package, and then you can separately choose to install the main components (i.e. single0player, multiplayer, etc.),' EA explained, with the base package expected to come in at a much smaller 55GB. This isn't a new idea and is something Activision's been doing with the Call Of Duty games in recent years, in response to how much storage space they had begun to take up. However, the install sizes for Black Ops 6 are much bigger, at 128GB for the whole thing or 78GB if you already have COD HQ and Warzone installed. So Battlefield 6 is going to be considerably smaller. 'Never thought I'd see the day that EA makes pro-consumer choices. No forced launcher, staying true to IP, and putting in quality-of-life improvements. This is a great start, hopefully they keep it up,' writes one fan on Reddit. Another fan adds that customisable installs 'need to become the norm now if compression is going to go out the window,' highlighting things like language packs and 4K graphics packages that should be optional. 'It's crazy that they are saying all the right things and after that reveal event everyone who played it is backing it up,' says another, referencing the recently revealed multiplayer gameplay, which is so far making a good first impression among the community. Some still hold reservations, though, with one fan suspecting that Battlefield 6's file size will balloon with inevitable updates: '55GB at start and after 2 seasons 100GB.' More Trending Others also have difficulty believing EA's promises. 'They're saying a lot of pro-consumer/pro-Battlefield fan stuff but let's see them DO these things' says one, while another adds, ' Guys, don't believe anything EA says. The launch and following months is what will show the truth.' They're not entirely wrong. While a new game can make a very strong first impression, interest can quickly wane if certain problems aren't addressed. Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds, for instance, seemed like a future classic when it launched this February, but while it's still the best-selling game of the year overall, sales have sharply declined since. This can partially be attributed to fan frustration with how Monster Hunter Wilds runs on PC and, as a result, not only has the player count dipped, but the game's being outsold by much older Resident Evil and Devil May Cry games. Battlefield 6 'doesn't need Nicki Minaj' says dev in knock against Call Of Duty

Fans of Battlefield 6 are worried the new game will pull a Call Of Duty when it comes to crossover skins, but the developer insists it will remain 'grounded'. According to current rumours EA is expecting to attract up to 100 million players to Battlefield 6, when it's released in October. That's orders of magnitude more than any previous entry in the series and more akin to the numbers enjoyed by the likes of Call Of Duty and Fortnite. Some influence from those games can already be seen in Battlefield 6, as the sequel will feature a separate battle royale mode. That isn't necessarily a bad idea but it has many fans worried that Battlefield may pick up some of Call Of Duty's other bad habits, especially when it comes to paid-for skins. Call Of Duty and Fortnite are known, for better and worse, for mountains of cosmetic skins based on movie stars, cartoon characters, real-life celebrities, and much more. Call Of Duty fans are getting increasingly fed up with the trend and it seems Battlefield 6 will be purposefully avoiding it. Speaking with DBLTAP during a recent London event, Battlefield 6 design director Shashank Uchil (who's been working on the series since 2018's Battlefield 5) expressed a disinterest in any sort of wacky crossovers for the game, insisting the game will remain 'grounded.' 'It has to be grounded. That is what Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 was – it was all soldiers, on the ground,' said Uchil. 'I don't think it needs Nicki Minaj. Let's keep it real, keep it grounded.' That second bit is a very pointed reference to how Activision added rapper Nicki Minaj as a playable skin in 2022's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Not even as a character, but as herself and not in any sort of military wear. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Battlefield Studios head Vince Zampella (who famously helped create Call Of Duty) was also quizzed by Eurogamer about the possibility of crossover skins. 'We want to be true to Battlefield, we want this fantasy to feel like you'd expect of Battlefield, so that's what we've been focused on,' he answered. While it can feel like Call Of Duty fans are always complaining about something with each new game, the series' use of crossover skins has been a point of contention for many years now. Things started off with celebrity cameos like Lewis Hamilton and various footballers, but as the years went on the skins became more and more fantastical. It was one thing when Call Of Duty was adding action heroes like Rambo and John McClane, who at least somewhat fit with the series' aesthetic, but now you have the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and cartoon characters like Beavis and Butthead running around shooting one another in Call Of Duty's otherwise realistic looking maps. There's no shortage of Call Of Duty fans hating on these sort of skins online, with the Beavis and Butthead ones prompting a Reddit thread labelled 'COD is cooked' with more than 8,000 upvotes. 'I was fine with the future tech, the anime, I reluctantly accepted the animal and mascot characters but… f***ing giant glowy cartoon character? Really?' reads the top comment. 'I remember coming around a corner and seeing Nicki Minaj knifing some dude and just turned the game off. It was the last time I played COD,' reads another. COD is Cooked [COD] byu/Purehate28 inCallOfDuty A separate thread from nine months ago innocently asked fans what their favourite Call Of Duty collab has been and while there are plenty legitimate answers, a lot of comments are people answering with none of them. The top comment is just a blunt 'No', with the second most upvoted being, 'None, I hate annoying skins, let alone crossovers.' As a result, a rumour from April, courtesy of frequent Call Of Duty insider GhostOfHope, suggests that despite the crossovers 'printing money,' Activision plans to rein them in because of fan complaints. By comparison, Battlefield fans have been elated at just how ordinary the skins for Battlefield 6 look so far. When the first line-up of skins leaked earlier this week, fans on Reddit praised them for looking like… generic soldiers. One comment simply reads, 'I love them, I love them, I love them,' while another says, 'Finally no weird operators, just plain anonymous soldiers.' That said, there remain concerns that EA will opt to sell weird crossover skins later down the line. After all, the reason Call Of Duty and Fortnite keep doing them is that despite the complaints plenty of people are willing to pay good money for them. More Trending 'The moment I see Nicki Minaj running through the map holding an M16, I'm out,' says one fan, with someone predicting it'll happen in just six months. Another fan writes, 'Modern military skins is totally okay, but that's a big no if we see some other characters for instance from Squid Game, Beavis & Butthead, Diablo 3, etc., etc. with anime guns and/or some other funky/pop/arcade things.' It's worth noting that Battlefield has dabbled in crossovers before, with Battlefield 2042 receiving skins based on Dead Space and Mass Effect. However, those are EA owned franchises and at least vaguely fit Battlefield's near future aesthetic. Even so, while the Battlefield 6 team might be disinterested in copying Call Of Duty's example when it comes to collabs, the higher-ups may have different ideas, especially if they want to market the game to a wider audience beyond the established fanbase.
