Xi vows greater support for Moscow in meeting with Lavrov
BEIJING : Chinese President Xi Jinping told Russia's top diplomat today that their countries should 'strengthen mutual support', state media said, as foreign ministers gathered in Beijing for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) talks.
Meeting Sergei Lavrov in Beijing, Xi said the two countries should 'strengthen mutual support on multilateral forums', according to state news agency Xinhua.
Beijing and Moscow should work to 'unite countries of the global south and promote the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction', Xi said, according to Xinhua.
Russia's foreign ministry said in an earlier statement that 'a number of issues of bilateral political contacts at the highest and high levels were discussed'.
They included preparations for President Vladimir Putin's visit to China to join an SCO summit and World War II anniversary celebrations.
Russia's TASS news agency reported that Xi met Lavrov after the Chinese president held a 'general meeting' with SCO foreign ministers.
Lavrov met Sunday with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to discuss Ukraine and relations with the US.
The Russian foreign minister arrived in China following a visit to North Korea, where he received assurances of support in its conflict with Ukraine.
Beijing, a diplomatic and economic ally of Moscow, claims to be neutral in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
But China has never denounced Russia's more than three-year military campaign nor called for it to withdraw its troops, and many of Ukraine's allies believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow.
China regularly calls for an end to the fighting, while also accusing western countries of prolonging the conflict by arming Ukraine.
Beijing has long sought to present the 10-member SCO as a counterweight to western-led power blocs such as Nato.
It has pushed to strengthen collaboration between its member countries in politics, security, trade and science.
Top diplomats from the SCO are convening in Beijing this week for a meeting of the council of foreign ministers, including Lavrov, India's Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Iran's Abbas Araghchi.
Xi noted today that 'political mutual trust among member states has deepened', according to state broadcaster CCTV.
The SCO 'has successfully explored a path of regional cooperation that aligns with the trends of the times and meets the needs of all parties, setting a model for a new type of international relations', Xi said.

One of them is focused on 'imports of polysilicon and its derivatives,' while the other centres on 'imports of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and their parts and components.' While the documents do not name any countries, Chinese drone maker DJI dominates the global consumer market, and Beijing is also a major player in the world's solar supply chain. Trump's tariffs targeting various sectors are separate from those he has imposed on imports from different countries. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump's sweeping tariffs have roiled financial markets and triggered fears of an economic downturn. In April, he slapped a 10% levy on goods from almost all US trading partners. The duties are set to increase for dozens of economies come Aug 1, while trade negotiations continue as partners try to strike deals to avert the higher levies.

Russian court hands US-owned food company's assets to the state
Since being placed under Russian state management, Glavprodukt's sales have dropped sharply. (The Moscow Times) MOSCOW : A Moscow court has ruled that the assets of US-owned canned food company Glavprodukt be handed over to the Russian state, the TASS news agency reported late on Friday, following a months-long legal tussle over the company. One participant in the court proceedings, who declined to be named, confirmed to Reuters yesterday that the court had satisfied the prosecution's claim in full with immediate effect after a six-hour court session. The seizure of Glavprodukt, the only US company Moscow has seized, coincides with stalled attempts to reset US-Russian relations. Glavprodukt and other assets ultimately owned by US company Universal Beverage and founder Leonid Smirnov were placed under temporary state management by presidential decree in October 2024. Prosecutors subsequently sought to justify the seizure by arguing the measure was necessary to ensure a stable food supply in Russia, according to a letter seen by Reuters in April. 'The court ruled that the general prosecutor's case on the seizure of Glavprodukt assets and property of its head Smirnov in favour of the state be satisfied in full,' TASS quoted the court as saying. 'The decision comes into force immediately'. Court filings showed Universal Beverage had applied for a postponement of proceedings, but no ruling was specified. The court did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'The decision made violates the law of Russia. 'Steps will be taken, and some have already been taken, to protect our interests, not only in Russian courts but also in American courts as well as international courts,' Smirnov told Reuters. 'Our efforts in Washington definitely will be accelerated,' he added. Smirnov said he plans to appeal the decision in Russian courts. He has already begun legal proceedings in the US state of Arkansas, where Alexander Tkachev has business interests. Tkachev is a former agriculture minister and the ultimate owner of Druzhba Narodov, the company which requested the Kremlin appoint new management at Glavprodukt, Reuters reported in April. Since being placed under state management, Glavprodukt's sales have dropped sharply, and it has posted regular monthly losses, according to documents seen by Reuters last week. The new management team plans to boost dwindling sales with exports to China and North Korea, according to documents reviewed by Reuters and people familiar with the matter.
